Congratulations to the swimmers and the faithful supporters in blue. Thanks to our stalwart tennis players who braved the heat. You showed great heart. There is always something happening at Duchesne and it’s all about you so please take advantage of what’s on offer. Time management is a juggle for most as you settle into the academic year . It is strongly advised that ALL first years attend the early sessions of “Becoming a Professional.” Later in the year, these will focus on second and third years as they ready themselves for the transition to a professional world after College and Uni. However, all students are welcome to attend. The Art in the Afternoon workshop requires no particular talent. If you can hold a chopstick and put a dot on a canvas , you will become an artist, so if you haven’t signed up already, make it quick numbers are limited. This is a great way to create an artwork for the Duchesne Art Show and to decorate your room. Thanks to Claudia, our in-house yogi—everyone is raving about how chilled they are after her classes and well done to those I have seen over at UQ Sport at Pilates or Zumba. Taking care of your physical health will pay huge dividends in the short and long term , as Professor Macdonald reminded us last week. So even a walk is going to make a difference. Stay safe and well and say hello so I can remember your names. Warmest, Thérèse Note: So that all residents have a chance to read the weekly newsletter, please do not remove them from the Dining Hall. From the Deputy Head (Acting) Hope you are enjoying the new bean bags on Mindful Mondays in the Learning Lounge! For those of you who missed Lidia’s first presentation, you can see some of her mission photos at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKFbB_kqpDI At the end of her presentation, she shared the San Damiano Song by Donovan that really resonated with me. If you want your dream to be, Build it slow and surely. Small beginnings greater ends. Heartfelt work grows purely. If you want to live life free, Take your time go slowly. Do few things but do them well. Simple joys are holy. Day by day, stone by stone, Warmest regards, Build your secret slowly. Vanessa Day by day, you'll grow, too, You'll know heaven's glory. EASTER BREAK Please let Julia know your plans for the Easter break—we need to know which dates you are not in residence! From the Dean of Studies You have already seen my email some weeks ago – I hope! - re the treasuretrove of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) that have become available in recent years through UQx https://uqx.uq.edu.au/ and associated universities. I urge you to take ten minutes to explore this further, because it can both pay dividends with your study now and add meaningful lines to your CV, in that you’ll have graduated with more than what your degree says about you. Some attractive courses include the following: Working in Teams (many of you have to do this as part of your assessment and it can cause a lot of challenges … and some tears, believe me.); Unlocking Your Employability; Question Everything – Scientific Thinking in Real Life; English Grammar and Style (This blockbuster course teaches key concepts and strategies essential for writing well, which is obviously crucial for success in tertiary study and in your professional life.); The Science of Everyday Thinking. https://www.edx.org/school/uqx has more to explore. https://www.class-central.com/university/qut will show you some courses comparable to MOOCs that are offered through QUT. UQx is part of edX, a not-for-profit online education venture founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that is committed to making high-quality educational experiences more widely available. By joining edX, The University of Queensland (UQ) has partnered with a consortium of institutions including the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Texas System, Georgetown University, McGill University, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, University of Toronto and Australian National University. (That background is just to whet your appetite by showing you the serious stature of institutions involved in this venture.) Having worked in administration for nearly 30 years and been fortunate enough to work at the Qld Police Department, in a kindergarten, preschool, primary school and high school, I’m now pleased to be working at Duchesne College – I may even graduate to retirement one day! I’ve been married 31 years and have two wonderful boys who graduated from UQ with Law degrees, so I can fully understand your stress and anxiety at times. I love to travel and have had the opportunity to live in Paris for two years and in London for two years – such a wonderful experience. This year I’m off to New Zealand and hopefully the USA at the end of the year. In my spare time I dabble in a variety of handicrafts – sewing, quilting, cross stitch, crochet and knitting. I usually have some project on the go. I look forward to watching you grow into independent and successful young women.
