Low carbon concrete solution
Reducing CO2 emissions by up to 50%
Designing and building sustainable structures that incorporate green
materials like lower carbon concrete is becoming increasingly popular.
There are various technologies available to decrease concrete CO2
emissions by designing the concrete mixture with low energy cement
and a high amount of supplementary cementitious materials, using
recycled aggregates and water; and injecting CO2 into concrete during
the mixing or curing process.
CarbonCure is another technology that claims to decrease CO2
emission by up to 5% by mixing or curing concrete with CO2 gasses or

liquids. Dufferin Concrete has developed a Lower Carbon Concrete
solution that combines state-of-the-art research and expertise along
with proven CRH techniques that ensure optimized use of CRH Slag
Cement and advanced chemical technologies. This concrete solution
has been used successfully in two residential projects reducing CO2
emissions by up to 50%!
We’re proud to offer this solution to make your next project more
sustainable.

Hwy 7/8 Overpasses (Barrier wall gap filling)
Durham Region Transit Maintenance Facility
(Watermain protection and insulation)
Over the past year, Dufferin Concrete and Ontario Redimix have produced over 7,000 m3 of
Dufferin Foamcrete® making great strides in application and using this innovative solution for a
variety of projects.
The product has been used effectively in projects like the Toronto Gerrard Street Watermain
Replacement Project where its excellent flowability, filling capacity and pumpability made it
perfect to backfill the old watermain. It was also used as the backfilling material of choice in the
Durham Region Transit Maintenance Facility Project to provide protection and insulation to the
pipeline system.
With its high flowability, self-compaction and excellent insulation, it protects the watermain from
frost penetration and stabilizes the frozen soil surrounding the pipe system. On the Hwy7/8
overpasses in Kitchener, Dufferin Foamcrete® was used to fill the barrier wall gap to reduce the
dead load applied on the overpass structure.
The product proved to have good consistency and performance during the winter construction
season with successful production of over 1,000 m3 a day.
ADVANTAGES
 Weight reduction of structures: Less steel reinforcements required for slabs, columns,
beams and foundation.
 Easy-consolidation: no compaction required.
Improved thermal insulation: Can achieve over 20 times higher insulation results compared
to normal concrete.
Improved fire resistance
 Sound attenuation
Easily re-excavated if necessary.
Dufferin Foamcrete® is available to customers in a wide range of density and strength
developments. The team has developed the technical expertise to optimize the entire process,
from production to on-site application, ensuring performance and quality consistency for all
applications. We have also improved the safety of the operation procedure by implementing a
unique application extension to completely eliminate the need to work at heights. This
improvement was recognized with the Gold prize at the 2015 President’s Awards for OH&S
excellence, honouring projects that improve health and safety throughout the company.

Safety talks, at your site
Let us share our OH&S best
practices with your team
In an effort to always strive for Zero Harm, CRH is
offering to conduct tail gate safety talks at your site
for your crew to share industry best practices and
keep all of us safe on jobsites.
OH&S is always a top priority in our industry
and we’d like to share best practices for
commercial vehicles on safe driving as it
relates to recognizing various blind spots
around their vehicles. This is important not
only for day to day operations, but of course
also during delivery of products and services
to your jobsites.
As we know, accidents big and small still
happen in our industry all too often and these
lead to injuries, lost time, expenses, and in
tragic cases, fatalities. To work towards our
goal of Zero Harm to our employees, our
customers’ employees and the community,
we’re also providing customers with a safety
package that contains pertinent safety
information about construction safety
practices.
We hope you’ll take us up on our offer and
let us come to talk safety with your crew so
we can work together towards Zero Harm!
Contact your Sales Representative if you’d
like more information.
The danger zone
Blind spots are areas where you cannot
see without the help of mirrors. The
collective blind spot surrounding the
vehicle is called “The danger zone.”
Correctly adjusted mirrors mean:
 Virtually no
blind spots
 A clear view
 Reduced risk
of incidents
 Peace of mind
Mirror check station
We invite you to have your drivers learn
about proper mirror adjustments. Drivers
will learn the functionality of each mirror
and how to properly align those mirrors
to a predefined mirror check station grid.
Instructions can also be provided to you
so you can set up your own mirror check
station at your site.
Talk to your sales
representative to
find out how your
drivers can visit the
Mirror Check
Station.

Innovation in back-up beeper noise to keep
workers safe and reduce noise pollution
With increasing urbanization in southern Ontario, construction in residential
areas is more and more common. With operation hours sometimes going
around the clock, noise from these construction sites is becoming an increasing cause of concern for both residents and the contractors working onsite.
Broadband Backup Alarms are
now becoming increasingly
popular on job sites as a new
solution to alleviate noise issues.
The alarms reduce the loud
beeping noises that can be a
disturbance to the surrounding
neighborhoods and only escalate
in volume when something or
someone is within a certain
distance to its sensors. The
noise is less intrusive but still
provides an alert to the driver
and workers within the defined
area. The beepers follow and
meet the standards set out in
CSA.
In particular, on a construction
site where there are often many
vehicles moving at one time and
beeps coming from several
trucks, it can be confusing for
workers as to where the danger
actually is. The new system uses
directional “white sound”, a
multi-tonal sound directed in a
specific area that is only evident
if they are within close vicinity to
the vehicle that is actually posing
a potential threat. By only being
in the specified space, the noise
does not become a nuisance to
the greater area and workers do
not become desensitized to the
constant beeping usually heard
on-site.
Projects are increasingly starting
to request this new technology
to help manage noise pollution
during construction so stay on
the lookout for the technology on
your next job.
