SI 2h
Ohio Academic Content Standards
• Earth and Space Sciences C
• Describe interactions of matter and energy throughout the lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere (e.g., water cycle, weather and pollution).
• Study Island 2h
• Please complete the above Study Island assignment by 4pm Thursday.
Today’s Topics
Student Learning Targets
• I will be able to recognize the difference between a rock and a minerals.
• I will be able to identify the ways in which different minerals are identified using methods such as: streak test, color, luster, cleavage, etc.
Key Words (Matching) streak
The color left by a soft mineral when it is scratched on an unglazed porcelain plate.
igneous rock Forms when magma and lava cool and make mineral crystals. hardness
A mineral's ability to resist scratching or cracking.
mineral
Homogeneous solid substance that occurs in nature and that has a definite chemical composition and an orderly atomic arrangement.
magma
Molten rock that is found below the surface of the Earth.
sedimentary rock
The type of rock formed from the deposition, compaction, and cementation of sediment.
metamorphic rock
Formed from pre‐existing rocks which have been changed by the exposure to extreme heat and pressure.

Rocks for Kids Website Can a mineral be a rock?
• To help answer that question let’s review and informal definition of each.
• A mineral is a pure substance that is formed naturally and has the same structure throughout.
• A rock is made up of one or more minerals. If a rock is cut open , the minerals can often be seen because they are different colors and different shapes inside the rock.

Properties of Minerals
Properties of Minerals
• A physical property is a characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance.
• Each mineral has its own unique set of properties that assist in its identification. The following are just some examples of properties used to identify minerals.
• Some of the physical properties, like luster and color, can be determined simply by looking at them. Other properties, like hardness and magnetism can be determined with easy tests.
Composition
• Composition describes the chemical makeup of a substance. Composition
Luster
Cleavage/Fracture
Color
Steak
Hardness
Magnetism
Specific Gravity
Identifying Minerals
• The composition of some minerals causes them to combine chemically with other substances. • For example, the mineral calcite will combine with lemon juice to form gas, which can be seen as bubbles.
• Many minerals can be categorized into compositional groupings based on common elements.

QUESTIONS / DISCUSSION
No questions?
You may go!
If you have a question raise your hand. Next use the polling tool If you have a working microphone and you have done the audio set up give me a green check. If not then give me a red x. People with a red x can type their question in the chat box but don’t send it until it is your turn.
