DIRECTIONS: Below is a cumulative review of the chemistry unit. All questions must be answered
using complete sentences. Reviews completed and corrected entitle students to use their notes for
the last five minutes of the quiz. The review is due either Tuesday, November 8 with a quiz on
Thursday, November 10. Students are to study for their quiz 20 minutes each night prior to the quiz
using their notes, handouts and reviews. All of these materials can be found on the science
classroom page under the Parent Resources pull-down menu at www.cityacademyschool.org.

SHORT ANSWER: Answer each of the following questions using proper terms and complete sentences.
1. What is the difference between a physical property and a chemical property of matter? What are some
examples of physical properties of matter?
2. What is mass? How is mass on Earth measured? What measurement is used to measure mass and weight on
Earth?
3. What is volume? What unit is used to measure volume?
4. What are the three major states of matter? How is a solid different from a gas? What must happen to a gas to
become a liquid? What must happen to a liquid to become a solid? Draw what the particles of a solid, liquid
and gas would look like in the boxes below.
5. What is an atom? What are the two major parts of an atom? What are the three subatomic particles found in
an atom? Where are each of these particles found in an atom?
6. What is density? What is the difference between a very dense object and a less dense object? What is the
equation for density?
7. What are the three types of molecular matter? How is a compound different from a mixture?
8. How is an organic compound different from an inorganic compound? How is a polymer different from a
monomer?
9. What does the atomic number of element tell you about an atom? What does the atomic mass tell you about
an atom? How do you figure the number of neutrons in an atom?
LABEL: Label each of the following graphics using scientific terms.
ATOMIC MODELS: Use the information in the squares of the periodic table to determine the number of protons,
electrons and neutrons, and then complete the atomic model.
