If you are having a party and want your guests
to make their own Tossing Socks as part of the
activity, you’ll want to pick up a couple of bags
of new white tube socks, or if you’re making your
own set for the family you can give new life to
your old unmatched socks. Just make sure
you’re using clean washed socks without holes!
Instructions:
1. A standard tossing game set would have two sets of 3 Tossing Socks, each set in a different color,
one for each team. Or you can have each person paint their own sock their own way so they
can identify their sock and score individually. If you are planning on having a party where the
guests make their own Tossing Sock and then playing the game, you will need to do the craft
early in the party, allowing the socks time to dry, then fill them with beans and play the game
near the end of the party. Depending upon the type of paint and how much is used, these could
take 30-60 minutes to dry.
2. Take a clean sock and slide a smooth empty plastic bottle or soda can into the end of the sock.
This will keep the fabric paint from soaking through from one side of the sock to the other when
you paint and also gives you a nice firm surface to paint on.
3. Use fabric paint and/or fabric pens to
decorate your socks.
4. Then set your socks aside to dry.
5. Measure 1 cup of dried beans or rice into
the toe of each dry sock. You want the
same amount of beans in each sock to
so that they all have about the same
weight for tossing.
6. Tie a knot in the sock to create a
“bean bag” in the foot of the sock.
7. To play the game you will need to create targets or “buckets” to toss the bean bags at and also
decide where you toss from. Here are 4 different ways to create targets:
a. You can create circle targets on the grass with hula hoops, jump ropes or belts laid out in
circles of different sizes. Give the different hoops point scores depending upon their size
and distance from where you throw.
b. Use a large piece of poster board to paint a round target with circles within circles.
c. Use assorted size “buckets”, like sand pails, ice cream buckets, laundry baskets, cardboard
boxes, etc. and place these at different distances from where you throw.
d. Or you can just use items already in the yard or park that you identify in advance: the
maple tree, the end of the slide, the 3rd fence post. Be very clear where the target is so
that you don’t argue and then scores are given for who gets the closest to the target.
8. HAVE FUN!
