Client Community
Services, Inc.
March 2017
EXECUTIVE RAMBLINGS….Jeri L. Schettler, Executive Director
We dedicate this issue of the CCSI Quarterly Newsletter to our Board
President, Ken Moser, who lost his battle with cancer on Monday, February
28, 2017.
Ken served on the Board of Directors of CCSI from 1999 until his death, the
last 12 years as Board President. A busy, involved community leader, Ken
always made time for his duties on the CCSI Board and was instrumental in
granting raises and “thank you” payments to CCSI staff throughout the
years. Ken was always thinking of ways to further the name of Client
Community Services, Inc. throughout the community and strove to make this organization the
best that it can be. He was instrumental in promoting the Annual Windsurfing Regatta and
Music Festival, played an active role in promoting the half-cent sales tax which allowed for the
construction of the Worthington Event Center and remodeling of the Memorial Auditorium
Performing Arts Center, and served on numerous Chamber of Commerce and Convention and
Visitors Bureau committees. Those who knew him well said that the lyrics of the song, “500
Miles” by the Proclaimers, was one of his favorites and portrayed his character. Here is a
sampling of those lyrics:
When I'm working yes I know I'm gonna be
I'm gonna be the man who's working hard for you
And when the money comes in for the work I'll do
I'll pass almost every penny on to you
But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walked 1000 miles
To fall down at your door
Thank you, Ken, for working for CCSI and walking 1000 miles and more for us. You will be
greatly missed!
CLA 921 Notes:
Like everyone else, we are all ready for
spring weather to arrive! January and
February can be a bit challenging with the
weather, so we didn’t get out and about as
much as we would have liked. One
consumer likes to keep busy making
potholders and she has made 60 in 2
months! Another housemate has been
working on model cars during the cold
months.
TRACI GRUIS
SILS Advisor
Traci has been with CCSI for 3 years and enjoys
being able to make the consumers smile. “This
tells me I’m doing my job!”
Consumers at 921 hosted a bingo party in
January and had friends over in February to
decorate Valentine cookies and a time of
visiting. We also attended a couple of
activities at the Memorial Auditorium and
are looking forward to March activities at
the Auditorium, the Spiritual Retreat and
Easter.
Pam Mastbergen, Supervisor
She has been married almost 9 months to
husband, William. Traci is the daughter of Paul
& Paula Krumm and is the oldest of four siblings
with two sisters (Nicole and Jayda) and one
brother (Aaron). She also has a niece, Celina.
In her spare time, Traci likes to play softball and
board games, watch movies and listen to music.
Traci is an Independence Day baby – she was
born on the Fourth of July!

1307 News…
WELLNESS COMMITTEE
So far this year, we have had a great start to the new
year. We have been to ball games, hockey, wrestling
meets, concerts and dance team competitions.
Spring is finally here! So we can finally get outside and enjoy
the weather. One great way to enjoy a beautiful day is to go
for a walk, which is also a great way to get some exercise.
Below is a guideline as to how many calories you can burn
when walking. Have a happy, safe spring season!
We had two consumers with birthdays in February.
One consumer turned 60 and he received over 45
birthday cards and hung them on his door. We went
to the Blue Line for their birthday dinners and they had
a great time when people would come up and talk to
them.
The house was decorated for St. Patrick’s Day. Our
one consumer said it is time for the snow to end as he
is tired of blowing snow! They’re all ready for summer
to come. Consumers are happy now that Friendship
Suppers have resumed and they also enjoy People’s
First and going to the Dollar General to shop for an
outing.
With open arms we recently welcomed two new staff!
From 1307….we hope everyone has a wonderful
spring!
Bonnie Schroeder, Supervisor
404 Welcomes
New Supervisor!
CLA 404 welcomes our newest supervisor, Tana Barrie.
Tana is married and has a 7 year old daughter who keeps
them very busy! Tana has lived in Worthington all her life,
graduating from WHS in 2011. She attended college at
the MN West Campus in Jackson, graduating in 2013 with
highest honors and received her cosmetology license.
Tana worked as a sales associate for a short time along
with being the store supervisor. Due to two major knee
surgeries, she was unable to continue working at a job
where she was constantly on her feet, so in June 2014 she
began as a DSP with CCSI at CLA 404, which she greatly
enjoyed. In February of this year, Tana was offered the
opportunity to become the supervisor at 404. She says,
“I’m still learning, but I have enjoyed my first month and a
half in my new position!”
The consumers at 404 have been busy as they have gone
to Rushmore for a soup feed, attended Friendship Suppers
and have invited friends from other houses over for
supper during the colder months. They’ve also enjoyed
invitations to other houses for coffee. They’re all looking
forward to spring and warmer weather. One of the
consumers said he looks forward to the nice weather so
he can ride his bike. They’re looking forward to the spring
dance, more Friendship Suppers, going on walks, and
enjoying time outside.

Iowa Services Celebrates Christmas…
Looks Forward to Spring!
Iowa services celebrated Christmas in January – we had lots of fun
which included a hot chocolate bar, meal and gifts.
We’re all looking forward now to spring and summer to get out
and enjoy the nice weather.
We have some exciting things coming up this Spring. We’re working
with Creative Spirits to come and do some paintings with staff and
clients. Watch for more information to come soon!
Here are some examples of paintings we could do:

Iowa 20 … Some Helpful Ideas!
Hello from Iowa #20! We hope you are all having a great year so far. With the holidays over and busy summer
schedules about to begin, I thought it could be beneficial to discuss why it’s important to set aside time for ourselves
and how to do it. I’ve been looking at this topic for about a month now, and to be honest, I’m no pro! As a working
“practically single” mom (my better half, Eric, travels for work, so 90% of the time, household and family related tasks
rest on my shoulders), I never seem to find enough “me time” and when I do squeeze in the time to pamper myself I feel
guilty! So, if you’re anything like me, or completely opposite of me, maybe these tips and ideas I’ve found will be
helpful.
Schedule the Time:
We usually schedule doctor appointments, vehicle repairs, work, kids’ activities and more into our days
and I always tell myself that my free days will be my day. But when that free day rolls around, I find
myself trying to scramble to pick up the house, run errands, catch up on laundry, and cram every
single thing I can think of into that open time so I can have some “me” time, but usually when I’ve
completed the laundry list of things to do, I’m fresh out of time for me. So, set aside the 15, 30, 60 or 90 minutes you
need to focus on you, write it in your planner, set a reminder on your phone, schedule a mental health day, do what you
need to do to ensure that time is designated for you.
Stay Off Social Media:
We live in a technology-based world where we compare each of our lives to our friends on
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter only to make ourselves feel like more of a failure because
we don’t seem to have our lives together like everyone else. In all reality, the mom you
see posting the perfect family photo with her kids all in line with big smiles on their faces
could be hiding the 5’ pile of laundry on the other side of that picture and we didn’t see the 15
meltdowns and 50 fruit snacks it took to get them all to smile. I personally know I struggle with the
concept A LOT! But some of the best days I have are the days I don’t check in on social media.
Turn off the Phone:
A little back story on this topic from me….ever since my Dad had a heart attack in the middle of the night
while my phone was on vibrate and no one could get in touch with me until a friend came over to my house
to wake me up, I feel a little anxious about turning off my phone fearing that I might miss something for
which I’m needed. In all reality, though, some of the most relaxing times I have are when I turn my phone to
vibrate, put it up, and don’t look at it for hours.
Don’t Apologize for Taking Time for Yourself:
I recently read an article on why we should stop apologizing for each thing we do, but instead show gratitude. For
example, if you’re running late to meet up with a friend for lunch, instead of apologizing for being late, say something
like, “Thank you for waiting for me…traffic was horrible today.” If you turn off your phone and miss something while
you’re taking your “me” time, don’t apologize! We all need the time to gather our thoughts and disconnect.
Maximize your Time:
Whether it’s waking up 10 minutes earlier, taking a longer shower, utilizing your lunch break, taking the
long way home after work, or going to bed earlier, take full advantage of each moment
A couple of things I enjoy during my “me time” are catching up on a TV show, getting my hair done, doing my nails,
reading a book, enjoying a cup of coffee, spending a day out-of-town shopping, going for walks, crafting/repurpose
things, and last, but not least…doing absolutely NOTHING at home. I hope these tips and ideas find you well!!

SILS Consumers Staying Busy
In December, consumers traveled to Luverne to take in
the “Festival of Trees” and a nutcracker display at the
Historic Museum, followed by a treat at McDonald’s.
This was a great way to get consumers and staff into the
spirit of the holidays.
When you think of the color
red, which holiday (other than
Christmas) comes to mind? If
you said Valentine’s Day, we
like the way you think! Red
was in abundance at the
February 14th SILS Social
Activity held at the Atrium. Consumers made
refrigerator magnets by painting wooden hearts red or
pink and then a magnet was attached to the heart.
Several games of Bingo were played prior to enjoying a
“red” supper of tomato soup served with grilled cheese
sandwiches and crackers and finished with a slice of
cheesecake topped with cherries…and the red beverage
was punch to complete the theme.
Did you hear about the 3
consumers heading south by
airplane? In February, two
consumers, with their family
members, boarded plans to escape
Minnesota Nice for Snow Bird Paradise! One flew to
Arizona and the other flew to the Sunshine State of
Florida. The third consumer left for Florida in March
with one of her best friends to do what Minnesota
Twins fans do in the heart of winter – she attended
Spring Training with the Minnesota Twins. Her trip was
booked through Off the Beaten Path and it was a dream
trip that came true! All three consumers enjoyed their
days in paradise.
On March 16th, 7 SILS consumers enjoyed a wonderful
evening of music by Jenn Bostic at the Memorial
Auditorium.
Having thoughts of Spring? Here is a recipe that one of
our consumers prepared with staff many times because
it was a big hit for him!
Colette Leopold, SILS Director
Stuffed Chicken Alfredo Broccoli Shells
2 cups of cooked chicken
2 cups of cooked broccoli
1 jar of Alfredo sauce
1 ½ cups of spaghetti sauce
21 jumbo pasta shells, cooked
1 tsp of salt
Dash of pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
¼ cup Parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, mix the Alfredo
sauce, chicken, broccoli, cheeses, salt and pepper
together. Spoon the mixture into the cooked pasta
shells. Grease a 9x13 baking dish with butter or cooking
spray. Evenly spread the spaghetti sauce on the bottom
of the baking dish. Arrange shells on top of the
spaghetti sauce.
Cover with foil and bake for 35 minutes or until heated
through. Dish out and enjoy!
RIDGEWOOD COMPLETES KITCHEN REMODELING PROJECT!
Old Kitchen:
Ridgewood staff are very excited and grateful to have a newly remodeled
kitchen! The renovation was completed in two weeks under the
supervision of Mike Johnson of Johnson Builders. All the supplies needed
to complete the kitchen were ordered and received before the project
began. A temporary wall was built to block off the kitchen from the dining
area while the work was under way. Meals were prepared by HyVee and
delivered to Ridgewood while the kitchen was out of commission. We sat
up a small “make-shift” kitchen close to the medication room in which we
kept all of our dishes and kitchen supplies. This is where we prepared
snacks and did all the further preparation of food to accommodate special
diets. Brad connected one of the dishwashers in the east laundry room so
we didn’t have to do all the dishes by hand. Dishes were rinsed and
prepared for the new dishwasher in the west laundry room, as it had a sink!
Our beautiful kitchen features new cupboards, countertops, new sinks, and flooring which made a huge improvement!
The new center island is on wheels and has a special table that consumers can pull out when they are working on
cooking skills. We now have a dishwasher that washes dishes in only a few minutes! The garbage disposal unit is so
large we could probably fit a chicken in it (although we aren’t planning to do that! ) A new microwave was placed over
one of the stoves which gives us more space. Another feature is our new walk-in cooler, which is something we could
only dream of!! And we also have a new huge freezer to replace several small freezers.
You really need to come out to see it to believe it! A huge THANK YOU to Jeri, the Board of Directors, and Mike Johnson
and Johnson Builders!
Pat Cowdin, Ridgewood Director
