Harriet the Spy: Harriet Tubman is most famous as
a “conductor” in the Underground Railroad, helping
transport slaves to freedom. But she was also the
ringleader of a wartime spy network made up of
former slaves. In 1863, she even helped lead a raid up
the Combahee River in South Carolina to free 700 slaves.
Role Playing: Pauline Cushman, a stage actress,
gained the trust of the South one night when she
proposed a toast to the Confederacy on stage. It
was all an act. Soon, Southern officers were sharing
secrets with her, which she passed on to the North.
Dashing Damsel: Belle Boyd, a 17-year-old Southern lass, picked
up valuable information by mingling with Northern troops
that occupied her hometown in Virginia. One night,
listening through a knothole in a hotel room door,
she overheard the plans of a Northern general.
Boyd raced across a battlefield to tell the South’s
General Stonewall Jackson, who turned that
information into a big victory in Front Royal, Virginia.
Rose Knows: Rose Greenhow, a Southern widow
living in Washington, D.C., used her friendships
with Northern senators and Secretary of State
William Seward to discover the North’s plans.
She then sent coded messages southward
using the Secret Line, a network of men and
women that smuggled reports out of the Capitol.
More than 300 women disguised themselves as men to fight in the Civil War.
