Students with little or no experience
in foreign language can enroll in
Level 1 French, German or Spanish.

Students who have achieved the
necessary level of proficiency can
enroll in Level 2 French, German or
Spanish.

In the area of foreign language, what is
expected of a student preparing to enter
Level 2 French, German, or Spanish in 9th
grade at Arrowhead High School?
Each language has specific curricular
items that are essential for preparing
students for success in Level 2 classes. The
following skills, appropriate for all
lanuages, are required:
I .Pronunciation
Students should read a paragraph
applying the rules of phonetic
pronunciation.
 Spanish - special emphasis should be
placed on the pronunciation of
vowels, d, t, r and cognate words
 French - special emphasis should be
placed on subject pronouns, silent
letters, nasal sounds
 German - special emphasis should be
placed on w and v sounds.
2. Listening
Students should demonstrate good
listening skills.
 Ability to follow and comprehend ongoing speech
 Ability to understand classroom
directions and discussions
 Awareness of different native
accents

5. Spontaneous Speaking
Students should express themselves
orally.
 Answer oral questions and ask
questions in complete sentences
 Participate in oral discussions and
spontaneous conversations
 Deliver prepared oral presentations
6. Reading
Students should read and understand
written text.
 Understand written directions and
instructions
 Recognize cognate words and find
contextual clues in order to
comprehend the general idea of a
reading
 Have experience responding to
written questions as follow-up to
reading activities

 Demonstrate an understanding of a
variety of cultural elements

4. Writing
Students should compose paragraphs of
6-8 sentences in the present tense.
 Use subject/verb and noun/adjective
agreement correctly
 Use appropriate word order and
sentence structure
 Use correct spelling (including accent
marks), capitalization and
punctuation

year for those students interested in
