Did You Know What are those clothes the priest wears at Mass? The clothes a priest wears when celebrating the Eucharist are called vestments. There are three pieces to the complete set of vestments: alb, stole and chasuble. The alb is a long, white garment worn over his regular clothes. The meaning of the alb is found in the rite of Baptism. In that rite the newly baptized is presented a white garment with the words “…you have become a new creation and have clothed yourself in Christ”. As Baptism is the first sacrament, the alb, evoking that sacrament, is the first vestment put on by the priest. The next garment donned is the stole, a long scarf-like garment worn over the shoulders. In ancient Rome the stole was a sign one held imperial office, somewhat like a uniform. After Christianity became tolerated and then favored in the empire it became the custom for ordained ministers to wear a stole as a sign of their office. That custom endures. As a sign of being in Holy Orders deacons wear a stole diagonally across their chest. Priests and bishops wear a stole over the shoulders and both ends hanging down in front. Lastly, the priest puts on the chasuble, a long sleeveless garment that covers most of his body. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI explains “The liturgical attire worn by the priest during the celebration of Holy Mass should, first and foremost, make clear that he is not there as a private person, as this or that man, but stands in the place of Another – Christ. What is merely private, merely individual, about him should disappear and make way for Christ”. Further “It is not he himself who is important, but Christ. It is not he himself whom he is communicating to men, but Christ. He makes himself the instrument of Christ, acting, not from his own resources, but as the messenger, indeed as the presence, of Another – in persona Christi . . .” (The Spirit of the Liturgy). Lighthouse Media Please enjoy the book, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, a Personal Portrait, or a CD, Can You Trust God?, as a small thank you from our church to your family. Read or listen, then share. More in Locked in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Box Do you need others to pray for you or for your situation, but don't want to share the details? Then write your petition on the small papers on the table next to the gifts at the back of the church and place the paper in Sacred Heart of Jesus box. Every mass the second lector carries the box forward to the altar, so with all the angels, saints, and our parishioners we can pray and lift your prayer t heaven. Last year the box was so full of prayers we had to pry them out of the box. You only need one paper as the Lord knows the fluidity of the situation. Never stop praying! Never stop asking for prayers from others!!! Lost & Found If you have lost items in the Church, please check the lost and found box in the Parish Hall. New Year’s Day provides a perfect opportunity to ask ourselves the question: Does my life reflect y gratitude for all that my loving Father has given me? Capital Campaign Grateful for Our Past...Preparing for Our Future Will Support and Establish Endowments Over the past few weeks we have announced that the diocese seeks to secure its future in God’s service by conducting a capital campaign. The funds raised in the Grateful for Our Past...Preparing for Our Future campaign will allow the diocese to augment existing endowments for preparing our future priests and priest retirement, and to establish a new endowment for youth formation. An Endowment is a fairly simple concept. The principal, revenues placed in such a fund, remains untouched with only the earnings on its investments used to address stated needs. Prudent stewardship dictates that we take care of the gifts entrusted to us today, as well as prepare for their preservation in future years. Our forebears sacrificed to leave what we have today in our parish and diocese. We too must look to leave a lasting gift to those who follow us in our faith. The endowment funds will: Generate earnings to address needs of the areas outlined; the principal of the endowment funds will not be touched; Grow through future gifts and contributions; Be managed by professional investment managers and monitored by the Diocesan Finance Council and the Investment Committee; and Operate under the responsibility of the Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau. Who will be asked to support this campaign? Every Catholic household in the diocese will be asked to prayerfully consider a gift to Grateful for Our Past…Preparing for Our Future. How are parishes asked to participate? Parishes are asked to conduct their individual campaigns for Grateful for Our Past…Preparing for Our Future. These efforts will be based on four principles: prayer, personal visitations, proportionate requests and pledge-type giving. Why emphasize personal visits? Individual visits emphasize the personal nature of giving, allow for a thorough presentation of the campaign case, give potential donors the opportunity to ask their own questions and allow visitors to express their enthusiasm. In addition, personal visits place a greater emphasis on stewardship, allowing the volunteer to share his/her own faith experience and participation. In summary, personal contact remains the single best way to ask for support.
