Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club Presidents Fishing Report For the last two weeks the fishing has been good. Two huge Tuna were landed on “Satisfaction” in the 1000m area outside the Garden Patch. At 51 and 53kg they were an awesome start to a great summer ahead. Closer to home there are large snapper out in deeper water, 60 - 100m off Flat and the Cavallis. They are not in big numbers, but are good condition fish. Lots of pannie snapper are to be found in 10 - 30m water all along the coast and in the harbour now the sea has finally warmed up to a respectable17 - 18O. There are not many kingis around, or they have eluded us, but I’ve seen then feeding at the harbour entrance this week. There are some good catches of Terakihi in 35m - 50m off Flat Island and the Cavallis with some pup Hapuka on some of the structures outside Stevies, out toward the Cavallis. A good amount of Gem Fish and a few Bluenose have been landed out wide. A Yellowfin weighed on Saturday was caught outside the Seamount in 600m on “Tradition” weighed in at 21kg. The Marlin are out there with several sightings and a couple of bites and there have been Albacore off Stevies around the 60m mark. Skippies are just showing up this week off Flat and Cavalli Islands outside the 100m line. Newsletter December 2016 What’s Happening ? Kelvin Mowat and Joe Campbell on ‘Reel a Peel’ found a good spot at the Cavallis with Kelvin weighing in snapper of 6.82kg and 6.32kg caught on 10kg line, on the first day. Jenny Sole aboard ‘Pipihura’ also landed a good fish of 5.18kg fishing at Te Ngaere, but the fish of the contest was landed by Jason Farmilo fishing from ‘Reel Chaos’ with a new men’s pinfish of 8.32kg, caught on 10kg line, fishing around the harbour with pilchards for bait. Jason’s son Luca had the heaviest fish in the junior’s section, at 3.12kg and Nikau Mokaraka fishing from ‘Christina’ won the prize for the average weight fish, both of them winning a $50 Warehouse voucher, a cap and braid scissors.
