Another ‘Tailgate’ Victory!
The seventh annual “Tailgate”
event was hosted by the Washington County Chamber on August
28, and the crowd was loving it
at Silver Wings. Football rivalries were in full gear. Delicious
food was everywhere, thanks to
Design II Catering, plus plenty
of cold drinks. There was a silent
auction with almost 100 items,
plus eight “Big Board” packages
that had people clamoring to take
the lead.

cheerleaders added to the festivities by serving food to sponsor

at this Fun Event
The Chamber hosted the first annual “Fall Frolic” event last October
at Silver Wings Ballroom in Brenham. It will be hosted again very
soon -- on Thursday, October 30, 2014.
Over 300 ladies attended last year with friends, moms, sisters,
church group pals, neighbors and coworkers. Everyone said it was a
great night! And everyone felt good about the shopping spree, because
proceeds from this event benefit the Washington County Wildflower
Reseeding project.
The crowd is expected to be even bigger this year, with publicity and
advertising taking place in Washington County and several surrounding counties.
Sponsors are currently being sought for this event. There are several
levels with many exciting benefits including opportunities for big-time
publicity and promotion. Want your name in the spotlight? The Headline Sponsor spot is still open and publications are ready to be printed
with your business name!
All members will receive a mailing by September 15 with an invitation and full details. But since you’ve read it here, call now and be the
first to grab the title spot!
On October 30, the Silver Wings Ballroom will once again be full of
exhibitors with wonderful products and services. There will be a great
raffle plus delicious food, cold drinks, music, fashion shows and more.
Exhibitor spaces are also available. Send an email to [email protected] to have details sent directly to your in-box, or call the
Chamber at (979) 836-3695 to get more information.

Classic Road Race was held
on September 7, and 557 racers
competed. The race drew thousands to the area, and hotels
and B&Bs were completely
sold out for the weekend. The
event created a large economic
impact during what is typically a slow month for visitation.
This is one of the oldest road
races in Texas. Racers cycled
on routes between 12 miles
and 90 miles. Prize money in
total was over $10,000. Proceeds from a luncheon at the
event benefited the Wounded
Warriors project.
Ride
founder
Edward
Smith III said that there were
teams from Houston, Austin,
Dallas, Lubbock. There were
also U.S. military teams.
“Cycling is a very popular sport and it brings a lot of
people with discretionary income into the area,” said
Smith about the positive impact the event has on the
community.

Learning Leadership Communication Styles
Understanding different styles of leadership and communication was the focus of
Leadership Washington County’s August
session. Dick Hammond from Leadership
on the Move led the day-long workshop.
The day was full of activities to teach
effective communication skills. The class
was led through several exercises to determine their current styles of leadership
and areas in which they wanted to focus
on for growth. Throughout the day class
members were reminded that leadership
is proactive and effective leaders challenge the process, inspire a shared vision,
enable others to act, model the way, and
encourage the heart.
Chamber staff member “Super” Shae
Janner is part of the new Leadership class.
She stated that her favorite part of this session (aside from the nicknames they gave
themselves during the opening exercise)
was when participants were seated in a cir-
cle with a small plastic cup next to them. In
the middle of the circle, about 100 marbles
were scattered. Each person was handed a
long narrow stick with a plastic spoon on
the end. The class was then told to fill their
cups with the marbles by using the spoon
tool and could only use one hand. It did not
take the group long to realize that the only
way to fill your cup was to assist each other to “scoop” up marbles and place them
into a cup other than your own. The mar-
bles represented ideas and knowledge, and
we learned that by sharing and giving to
others, they will reciprocate and everyone
will benefit.
Leadership Washington County is a program of the Washington County Chamber
aimed at educating and motivating current
and future leaders. The next session will be
a Team-Building Retreat on Sept. 30, facilitated at Camp For All by Camp Director
Kurt Podeszwa
Leadership participants “Joltin’ Jonas” Lacina and
“Handy Brandi” Daniel battle to win the Rock,
Paper, Scissors championship title.
Class members try and scoop up marbles to place
into cups during an exercise to demonstrate giving
and receiving knowledge.
“Super Shae” Janner writes a note of encouragement
on a card taped on fellow classmate “Appreciative
Andrea” Drab.
The group works together to untangle a rope so
that it becomes a circle while keeping one hand on
the rope at all times.
The class lines up along a rope and were instructed
to keep on foot on the rope at all times and to line up
in order of their birthday without speaking a word.
“Cool Cat” Krueger, “Smiling Sabrina” Horn,
“Joking Josh” Hunt, and “Twinkle Tonya” Currie
display their penny artwork.

Multi-Generations in the Workforce.” Her presentation left
the audience more knowledgeable about how to interact
with the five dominant generations in today’s world.
The Texas Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus is the largest organization of its type in the U.S. and

Get Noticed…
The ChamberWorks newsletter is published inside The

newsletter. Rates start at only $25 per month.
If you are looking for a new opportunity to advertise, just call Jane Hinze, Member Services Manager,

Another great way to promote your organization is
through targeted emails. The Chamber will forward your
“e-message” to all members, as long as it meets certain
criteria. For non-profits, it should not have a strong-sell for
sponsorships or donations. The message should be newsworthy, typically about an upcoming event. For regular
businesses, it should also be about upcoming special events,
as long as there is no purchase required for the reader to
experience the event.
E-messages are sent a maximum of once per quarter
per member during each calendar year.

Pick Up Trash, Find $100!
Over Labor Day weekend we hosted several events
for geocachers, all of which ended up a great success.
So successful, in fact, that one geocacher found a $100
bill right on the side of the road where she was picking
up trash during the Sunday “CITO” event!
Geocachers first met up at a “flash mob” event on
Friday evening in Downtown Brenham. Cachers gathered for 15 minutes at Toubin Park to sign the log,
mingle, and snap a photo. Three geocoins were awarded to cachers who completed the Birthplace of Texas
GeoTour that day!
Saturday evening found 26 people gathered at a lovely country setting for swapping stories, sausage wraps,
and contributing audio testimonies of how they became geocachers. Once again, five more geocoins were
awarded to successful cachers who arrived with completed Passports in hand.
As is typical for geocaching events, the weekend
ended with a CITO event early Sunday morning. CITO
stands for “Cache In, Trash Out” and is a geocacher’s
mantra wherever he or she goes caching. Fourteen geocachers came together to pick up trash along Wood
Ridge Blvd, Salem Rd and Hwy 36 South. Among the
interesting items found was a blown tire, a full unopened can of Pringles, men’s boxers, and the best prize
of all…a one hundred dollar bill!
You never know where geocaching will lead you, or
what you’ll find along the way. Over Labor Day weekend, these geocachers found a wealth of Texas history,
small town charm, and friendly businesses throughout
Washington County. The visitors came from as far as
Kansas to explore this county, meet other geocachers,
and help Keep Washington County Beautiful.
Thanks to all who came out to support geocaching
in Washington County. We enjoyed meeting you all –
visitors and locals – and look forward to holding more
events in the future. A big thank you to Pleasant Hill
Winery for donating water for the clean-up crew and to
Donna and Albert Garcia for providing the setting and
food for the “Meet & Greet” on Saturday.
