Singing in Style A Night of Music and Fun
Thank you to all our donors, volunteers,
families, singers, and everyone involved in making
Singing in Style a wonderful and successful event on
November 6 at the Ramkota! We couldn’t have
done it without you! We would like to give a
special thank you to Ruth Schadler for hosting the
event, Marci Narum for emceeing the style show,
Dakota Community Bank and Trust for their
sponsorship, to Attitudes, Old Navy and Scheels for
allowing us to model their clothing, and to all the
families and businesses that donated to our silent
auction and raffle. And we can’t forget about our
parent volunteers! This evening would not be possible
without their hard work and dedication. Friend of CDCC
Each year during Singing in Style, we
recognize people and organizations whose
involvement in CDCC has made a significant
impact. This year’s recipients were Janine
Roaldson, Jeremy Kjos, and Lazetta Leer. Thank you for being a huge part of CDCC! Angels Sing 2016
Central Dakota Children’s Choir will present the well-loved “Hallelujah” for the finale of this year’s annual
Christmas Concert. This beautiful piece from G.F. Handel’s “Messiah” is known to bring people to their feet.
Legend has it that in the 1700s King George II was so moved by the music that he rose to his feet when the first
notes rang out and remained standing until the end of the chorus. Royal protocol dictated that when the monarch
stands, everyone in their presence is also required to stand. Thus, the entire audience and orchestra stood initiating
a tradition that has lasted more than two centuries. We know that you will be moved just like King George II when you hear all five CDCC choirs perform this
spectacular piece on December 16 & 17 at 7:30 pm at the Belle Mehus Auditorium. The concert will also feature
individual performances from each of CDCC’s five choirs. Tickets are available online, at the choir office, and at
the door each evening. A big thank you to Knife River Corporation for sponsoring these concerts. www.aboutcdcc.org

Vision Statement
Central Dakota Children’s
Choir has been formed to
inspire children to a lifelong
love of singing through the
performance of fine choral
music.
Artistically Speaking
by Teri Fay, Artistic Director
I have been an employee of CDCC for all 19 of its years. I directed
the very first choir which is now called Bel Canto and still under my
direction, and I became Artistic Director 3 years later, when we moved to
three choirs. I am the founding director of Angelica, which I led for 10
years. I am as “CDCC Blue” as it gets! I love this organization! I tell you
all of this, simply because I continue to be amazed at what is accomplished
each and every passing year in CDCC.
We recently finished our Singing in Style event. I had the BEST TIME
EVER! I was lucky enough to find some time to bid on several of the
silent auction items (and I got some of them!!!), bought some more raffle
tickets and took a chance on the CARD raffle. I also had a chance to stroll
through the crowd and greet and meet many of you, and besides the choir
performances, this was my favorite part. Some of you are new ‘family’ to
CDCC, and some of you I have known for many years. Some of you are
former students of mine, now all grown up, having brought your children
to sing in CDCC. I watched some of my last year’s “Singing for Second
Graders” in their brand new Jubilate Red Vests and congratulated our 9
and 10 year singers, along with the 4 -year Angels. I even ate hot food,
which in years past, rarely happened to me ☺ and here’s what I couldn’t
help thinking:
This event has a wonderful way of gathering us together, rather like a fall
harvest. We all come from different walks of life, children from different
schools and communities and yet, we have this chance to come together. Now I know that you can never “please all of the people all of the time,”
but the smiles I saw on your faces as I walked through the crowd and as
I watched you watch YOUR children and loved ones, it was pretty clear
to me that we were having a very fine evening! Though it is a fundraiser,
Singing in Style has become an event that brings us together towards the
beginning of our new season: office staff, parent volunteers, businesses,
donors, pianists, singers, directors….the list goes on.
There are many events coming up this fall, and each of them will be
covered in this newsletter, named “A Tempo,” meaning “return to the
previous tempo,” (speed) and here we go again, embarking upon another
wonderful season!
•
•
Registration will be out soon for next semester’s “Singing for Second
Graders.”
If you are a CDCC Alumni, might you consider coming back to sing
with us in May?
• Check out the “Six Appeal” concert! This
group (formed by CDCC Alumni) puts on a
FABULOUS SHOW for the whole family. Entertainment extraordinaire!
My life has been filled with many
blessings, but again this year at
Thanksgiving, CDCC is one of the things I
am profoundly grateful for.....

Hushagen, are CDCC alum. Jordan and another CDCC
“kid,” Andrew Bettenhausen, were founding members of the
ensemble. Let’s show them our support!

Inspiring Tomorrow’s Voices
Jubilate
by Dawn Hagerott, Director
What an exciting start to our year. We are so busy
preparing music and performing we don’t have time
to get nervous. Jubilate is bursting at the seams
with an amazing 83 young singers. When we all get
together for an hour each week it is a whirlwind
of energy and musical passion. I am so honored
to be able to start these young singers on what I
hope is a lifelong journey of singing as they share
themselves through the beauty of music. My goodness,
they are off to an amazing start. We were invited to
participate in Bismarck Sings and were so honored
to open up the evening’s performance with “Put a
Little Love in Your Heart.” These singers were able to
witness wonderful performances by our high schools,
colleges and community choruses, and truly see that
singing is something they can do their whole life. The
greatest part was getting back on stage and singing
“Cantate Domino” with all of these singers. How cool
to have a piece of music written specifically with you
in mind. I was so proud of how courageously and
graciously you performed.
Singing in Style was a wonderful experience too. It
is so fun to sit down with our families, have a nice
dinner together and spend an evening dedicated to the
singers of CDCC. You were the first ones to perform
that evening and we were able to showcase our newest
piece “A la nanita nana.” How fun to sing in Spanish.
Your performance was outstanding. Jubilate won 2 of
the 3 highest raffle ticket sales awards. Thank you to
everyone for doing so well selling raffle tickets. As I
looked at you I couldn’t help but wonder how many
of you would walk across that stage when you’re a
senior in high school, receiving your 9 or 10 year
award.
We are feverishly preparing for our next
performance which is this week. We will sing for all
the first graders in town. We are going to add one more
new song, “Winter Troika Ride.” This is such a fun
performance to sing for the younger kids at our schools
and to be able to join Bel Canto on stage to sing some
carols together. We are going to have the Belle Mehus
rocking when we invite all the first graders to join us
and sing along. It will be a joyous day.
Here we are, only November and
you have performed in front of
thousands of people already. That
takes a great deal of maturity,
discipline
and
musicianship.
Congratulations. I’m so happy that
you are a part of the CDCC family!

SAVE THE DATE!
February 9, 2017 Cantus
by Mike Seil, Director
This has been a tremendous start for Cantus. We began
the year with a very productive camp this past August. I was very impressed with the effort and enthusiasm
shown by this group. This energy has carried over into
our fall rehearsals. We have accomplished very much
in a limited amount of practice time. It goes without
saying that this group is working on some difficult
literature. I have been most impressed however with
the continual progress made each week. The students
are obviously highly motivated and well prepared by
their individual choral directors.
Thank you all for your attendance at Singing in Style
on November 6th. As a director and choir parent, I
am always excited to hear the choirs for the first time
in performance. This is one of my favorite events of
the year. I was especially proud of the students for
presenting such a strong performance so early in
the season. Cantus will now focus on preparing a
variety of Holiday themed pieces in anticipation of our
December performance schedule. I am especially
looking forward to our Holiday Concerts at the Belle. Cantus will perform three Christmas songs, including
the unconventional medley “Christmas Goes
Classical.”
Thank you parents for making attendance such a
priority. I feel the communication has been
tremendous. Thank you in advance to all parents who
will help with sound equipment and risers throughout the year. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. Parents, please introduce yourself if I have not yet
had the privilege of meeting you. I look forward to
seeing all of you at our December 16th & 17th
Concerts. Thank you for supporting the Central
Dakota Children’s Choir and have a wonderful Holiday
Season!
Inspiring Tomorrow’s Voices
Angelica
by Dawn Hagerott, Director
It is such a privilege to work with the amazing young women of Angelica. I’m already so proud of these young
ladies. We are so diverse with 23 singers coming from seven different high schools and four different communities.
Yet, when you sing, we don’t see or hear that diversity. That is one of the greatest things about choir. It knows no
barriers or boundaries and the sky is the limit. Angelica offers a unique experience that none of our other choirs offer.
First of all, it is the only CDCC choir that a singer can remain in for four years. Congratulations to our seniors Katie
Leary and Hayley Schaefbauer for earning this award.
Angelica is a chamber ensemble. As a result, the responsibility and commitment that is required of each singer is so
much greater than it is in a large ensemble. Each singer has to be able to carry their own load. We don’t get to rely
on the work of others to lead us and carry our part. We all carry much more responsibility as a musician and thus we
grow so much stronger as singers. We have to be sensitive to the music, the ensemble sound, and we have to bring
so much more to the table. You are doing a fabulous job on this.
Singing in Style was our first performance of the year. You sang so beautifully. We started with “Hebe deine Augen
auf zu den Bergen.” Your voices floated to the heavens, just like the angels you were portraying. You sang “I Am
Not Yours” with such gorgeous tone and dramatic expression it took my breath away. You spiced things up with
“Sull’aria” where we were able to sing opera and reveal our higher ranges and operatic character and tone. It was
such a wonderful evening and you were fabulous. I can’t even imagine how you will sound by Christmas, not to
mention May.
We are looking forward to introducing two new pieces, “This Little Babe” and the Pentatonix arrangement of “Mary
Did You Know” at the tree lighting ceremony on December 8 at the State Capitol. Your voices are going to be so
fabulous in the capitol building. I know we have just gotten started, but I am so excited about this group and your
growth as an ensemble. It is going to be an amazing year. I look forward to every single minute that we get to spend
together making music. It is my honor.
Congratulations!

Share in the Song
Each year CDCC strives to advance its mission of inspiring
children to a lifelong love of singing. Our goal is to make a
difference in the lives of children and to never turn a child away
due to financial needs. We could never achieve this mission
without the wonderful help of our supporters! Every donation
makes an impact on a young singer.
This month we will kick off our annual Share in the Song
campaign. Our goal is to raise over $10,000 to help provide
tuition waivers as well as funding for programming, music
equipment, and other choir needs. With your valued support,
we can achieve this goal. Please consider making a donation to
help provide a quality choral education that is unique to North
Dakota.
