What is a bit? A bit is the basic unit of information in computing and digital communications. A bit can have only one of two values, 0 or 1. What is a byte? A group of binary digits or bits (usually eight) operates as a unit. 00110011 What is binary code? A coding system using the binary digits 0 and 1 in strings to represent a letter, a digit, or other character in a computer or another kind of electronic device. A bit string contains more than one set of bytes and can be used to represent a character. 1001 1100 1010 1110 Binary represents the letter and specific number. At the heart of ASCII is binary conversion. Morse code Morse Code is a method of transmitting text information as a series of on-‐off tones, lights, or clicks. Any boolean system such as this, which encodes meaning, is a form of binary code. What is Ascii? The American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) is a character-‐ encoding scheme originally based on the English alphabet that encodes 128 specified characters -‐ the numbers 0-‐9, the letters a-‐z and A-‐Z, some basic punctuation symbols, and a blank space -‐ into 7-‐bit binary integers. There are 8 bits (a full byte) but notice the first space is always 0. First, make a backup copy of your image file. Open a Finder Window. In the top menu select File > Duplicate (command + D). Open Text Editor. Go to File > Preferences and adjust the following settings: Click on the New Document tab and format the document for Plain Text. Click on the Open and Save tab and uncheck the boxes under When Opening a File. Check the box Add “.txt” extension to plain text files. Open your duplicate image file in Text Edit. Make changes to the code in your text file. Save your text file. Open your image in Preview to view the changes. Optionally you can drag your file into a web brower to view your changes, then reload the page each time you save a new version. Next Find and Replace one character with another.
