After nine years as president of Emmanuel College, Dr. Michael Stewart announced in
May 2014 that he would be moving on to other ministry opportunities.
“Dr. Stewart has certainly made an indelible mark on the campus of Emmanuel
College and in the hearts of all the people here,” said Mrs. Linda Thomas, EC Board of
Trustees Chair. “He and Pam have been such an integral part of campus life.”
During his administration, significant efforts were made to enhance the campus by
expanding academic and athletic programs and by improving the quality of campus life
through new resident and athletic facilities. The expansive athletic center is a focal point of
campus life and has added many recreational and wellness opportunities for students.
“While I may not be here on a daily basis, Emmanuel will travel with me in my heart for
the rest of my life, and I will continue to work enthusiastically for her success,” Dr. Stewart
said.

Ministries give
$74,000 at Feast
of Ingathering

Dr. Ronald G. White was introduced as president to
alumni and friends at the 2014 Homecoming luncheon by
Bishop Tommy McGhee (’76), who served as EC’s Acting CEO
over the summer.
“Ron White is certainly not a stranger to Emmanuel
College,” said Bishop McGhee. “He is connected well to our
denomination, and he served here for 22 years in addition to
his time here as a student.” A 1969 graduate of Emmanuel, Dr. White worked in
enrollment management at Emmanuel from 1980 to 2002
and also served as Director of Singers for much of that time.
“His credentials certainly qualify him; but, more
importantly, his heart for the ministry of this college
strengthens his commitment to work diligently for its
success,” said Mrs. Linda Thomas, Chair of EC’s Board of
Trustees. “He understands that we are a Christ-centered
institution dedicated to the mission of equipping our students
to make a Godly impact on the world. Fellow board members
and I look forward to working closely with Dr. White in the
days ahead.”
From 2002 to 2013, he served as Vice President for
Enrollment Management at Columbia College in South
Carolina. Most recently, Dr. White was a full-time faculty
member in the graduate school at Columbia College in the
higher education and divergent learning programs. He is
also an associate consultant with Noel-Levitz in strategic
enrollment planning and recruiting.
“I’m honored to be selected as your president,” Dr. White
said. “I hope each of you believes in your heart, as I do, that
God is still with us. That’s in our name, and I believe it is
reality.
“I hope that gives you hope. It gives me hope because I
know where my hope is placed, and I know where our source
is; our source is in God,” he said.
As Dr. White emphasized the importance of prayer in
addition to the work and collaboration required to operate a
college, he said, “Prayer precedes strategy.” He announced
plans to organize a network of prayer partners around the
globe as well as a regular time of prayer each week on
campus for faculty, staff and students.
“This is going to be the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced.
I am not up to the challenge, but God in me is,” he added.
“That’s where I’m standing, and I hope that’s where you’re
standing – God in you is able to help you stand up to whatever
challenges you face.”
Dr. White’s wife, Carol, is a 1971 graduate of Emmanuel
and served on EC’s music faculty for 22 years. Their sons,
Seth (2000) and Britt (2001, 2002), are also alumni as well as
other relatives.
“Emmanuel is in our blood,” he said. “We have loved this
institution, and we’ve given our time, our energy, our service,
our money. We have always had a dear place in our hearts for
Emmanuel and everything that goes on here.”

IPHC, the Women’s Ministries
brought a very generous
offering of nearly $74,000 to
Emmanuel College’s 67th
Annual Feast of Ingathering on
October 3, 2014.
“I am overwhelmed by
the generosity of the ladies
of the IPHC,” said Dr. Ron
White, EC’s Interim President
at the time. “Each year they
faithfully bring their offerings
to campus.
“Never in our history
have these offerings been
more important. The need
at Emmanuel is critical and
the gifts by our Women’s
Ministries ladies help
enormously. We owe them a
huge debt of gratitude,” Dr.
White added.
“I am most grateful to the
faithfulness of God through his
people for the wonderful gift of
nearly $74,000 for FOI,” added
Mrs. Linda Thomas, Chair
of EC’s Board of Trustees. “I
am so pleasantly surprised
because I wondered if the total
would be down because of
how generously the churches
responded to our SOS during
the summer months.
“The IPHC Women’s
Ministries did it again, and we
are forever appreciative of all
the effort that goes into this
event every year!”

As Emmanuel College celebrated 95 years in 2014, more than 300 alumni and friends attended the Annual
Alumni Luncheon on October 4 during Homecoming Weekend.
They were introduced to the new president of EC’s National Alumni Association as well as the recipients of a
special Presidential Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Many celebrating class reunions were also recognized and alumni from the Class of 1964 were inducted as
Golden Graduates of Emmanuel.

Ms. Robin Cato is the new president of EC’s National Alumni
Association. Her term succeeds that of Mr. Sherm Smith (’61), an
outstanding and hard working alumni leader who passed away in
May 2014 (see related article on page 14).

Ms. Cato grew up in Franklin Springs and comes from a long line
of family members who have attended, graduated from, and worked at
Emmanuel College.

She graduated from Emmanuel in 1981 and received her Bachelor
of Arts from Stetson University.
This year a special
Presidential Award was
presented to Dr. Hugh Morgan.
“Dr. Morgan, for more than 15
years, you have worked tirelessly
to keep your readers informed
through Hugh’s News,” President
White said. “You have always
supported Emmanuel College,
and you have never hesitated to
ask your readers to do the same.
This year especially, you invited
them to join you in giving $1,000
each to Emmanuel College.
Through your efforts, you and
Dr. Hugh Morgan
your readers raised more than
$20,000 for Emmanuel this summer.”
Dr. Morgan attended Emmanuel during the 1952-53 academic
year before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. Upon
completing his enlistment in 1956, Dr. Morgan went on to earn his
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Furman University in 1960,
which was the same year he was ordained by the IPHC.
Dr. Morgan also holds the Master of Divinity from Ashbury
Theological Seminary and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity
from Holmes Theological Seminary. In 1965, Dr. Morgan was
commissioned as a Chaplain by the United States Air Force.
In 1998, Dr. Morgan began writing a newsletter called Hugh’s
News & Commentary. It was small in numbers at first, but has
grown to about 2,500 subscribers and 5,000 readers. He serves
proudly as the founder of this successful online news magazine.

Alumnus of the Year
Bishop Tommy H. McGhee was named as EC’s 2014 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.
He is the Executive Director of Discipleship Ministries of the International Pentecostal
Holiness Church (IPHC) as well as the Corporate Treasurer for the IPHC. During the
summer, he also served as Acting CEO of Emmanuel.
“We humbly thank you for your leadership and for your commitment,” President White
said during the presentation. “Today, we want join together in thanking you for going above
and beyond to help guide us through one of the most challenging seasons in our 95 years.”
Bishop McGhee earned his Bachelor of Science in Religious Studies from Emmanuel’s
School of Christian Ministries in 1976. He also earned his Master of Ministry in Church
Growth and Church Planting from Southwestern Christian University Graduate School in
Bethany, Okla.
One of the highlights of the 95th year celebration
at Emmanuel College was a Singers Reunion during
Homecoming 2014.
Special thanks goes to the evening’s directors,
Bradley Cox and Jeff McCoy (former EC Singers
directors), band members as well as alumni and current
students in Singers for such an inspiring, worshipful

1940s
Dr. C.Y. Melton (’47) moved to Mullens,
W.V., last fall with his son Jim and
daughter-in-law Martha. They are
attending Mullens First PH Church and are
excited about this new adventure in their
lives. Dr. Melton would love hearing from
his friends: 800 Lincoln Street, Mullens,

Joseph H. King Jr.
Billy DuRant
Joseph H. King Jr. passed away May 22, 2014. Born in
1922 to Bishop Joseph H. and Blanch King, he is the
second of their four children. He enlisted in the U.S.
Army and served in the Battle of Bulge during WWII.
Upon returning from war, he came back to Franklin
Springs and taught English and other subjects at
Emmanuel College for many years. “He was at once
a formidable Christian intellectual and a kind and
observant individual—a gentleman— whose character
might be glimpsed on the pages of a beautiful art book,”
writes Dr. Philip Genetti (’77). “He was able to enrich
the minds of the people around him, including his
colleagues as often as his students, not in an arrogant or
self-referential manner but always as a natural response
to the inviting conversation, sharing out of the wealth of
his learning generously. “
Col. Billy DuRant passed away April 7, 2014. He served
28 years in the U.S. Army. Upon his retirement, he taught
business courses from 1977 to 1994 at Emmanuel.
1950s
Bill Marshburn passed away on June 1, 2014. He married his high
school sweetheart, Mrs. Lela Mae Hackney, in 1944 and held
many leadership positions, including president and owner of
Bemco Sleep Products until his retirement in 2000. He also served
as a board member at Emmanuel as well as other colleges. The
Marshburn Room in EC’s John W. Swails Center is named for him.

Mary Frances Duncan Ross
Ms. Mary Frances Ross passed away on May 12, 2014. She
was a music instructor at Emmanuel and the former organist
and member at Royston First United Methodist Church in
Royston, Ga.
Glenda Drum Tryon passed away October 22, 2014. She
graduated from Emmanuel in 1964 while her father, Dr.
Woodard G. Drum, was serving as EC’s fifth president. She is
survived by her husband of 45 years, Charles Tryon, and two
children, Chuck and Kristen.

Mr. Joseph King – playing his Gemeinhardt flute for
students and colleagues who recognized in his music
the skill and art which only many years of training and
practice can endow.
1960s
Sherman Bridges Smith (’60)
Sherm Smith passed away on May 23, 2014. This beloved
man was a friend to all and was a vital part of Emmanuel’s
leadership. He was a strong supporter and generous giver.
He served as a board member and also was President of EC’s
National Alumni Association until 2013.
The way he and his wife Bett (’61) have invested their
love for the Emmanuel family and passion for young people
has truly been a blessing and inspiration. They have worked
tirelessly to advance Emmanuel in many aspects, including
fund raising, enrollment and academics. Additionally, his
involvement with athletics ranges from attending many
games, helping in golf tournaments, and helping to begin
EC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012 (see photo to right).
He also led and personally worked on beautification and
landscaping projects in recent years to transform and
enhance the overall appearance of the entire campus.
He and Bett have been active members of Mt. Paran
Church of God in Atlanta and have helped to advance
many worthy causes. His lifetime career with Lockheed
Martin Aeronautical Systems took them and their family
all over the world. He is survived by his wife, whom he met
at Emmanuel, their three children, Shawnda, Sebring and
Ronson and their families.
Wanda Jones Bray (’73)
Wanda Bray Jones passed away on April 12, 2014. She
served others as a family nurse practitioner and also taught
at several colleges.

William ‘Bill’ Cecil Marshburn
Dr. Phillip E. Morris passed away on March 20, 2014. He
served on Emmanuel’s Christian Ministry faculty for many
years. He is survived by his wife, a sister, his aunt, a brother,
four nieces, two great nephews and many others.

Dr. Kirk Hartsfield (’50)
Dr. Kirk Hartsfield passed away
on June 14, 2014. He and his
wife Nelle (’50) married in 1953
and returned to Emmanuel in
1959. For the next 36 years,
he held many key positions.
”Over the years, he unselfishly
fulfilled a number of roles on the
administration: Dean of Men,
Dean of Students, Academic
Dean, Vice President for
Academics, and Executive Vice
President. Many undisciplined
and immature students owe
their second chance at a college
education to Dr. Hartsfield, who cared deeply about every young man
and woman who enrolled. Later, as Academic Dean and Vice President
for Academics, he was very instrumental in our successful transition
from a two-year college to a fully accredited four-year institution.
Largely behind the scenes, he devoted himself to endless hours
of research and data collection to satisfy…the accrediting agency.
He was always a valuable team member and demonstrated a kind,

Dr. Hartsfield is survived by his wife, their children Mike (’76)
(Christine) Hartsfield; Sharon (’75) (Tony ’77) Atkinson and their
