Desert Wind is the original name of the vineyard site planted by the Fries family in 1993. The name refers to the climate in eastern Washington where the vineyard is planted. The brand was released to the public in 2001; the winery opened in February 2007. Wines Desert Wind’s current case production is greater than 25,000 cases per year with a capacity to produce 200,000 cases annually. Desert Wind currently produces the following wines: Chardonnay Viognier Semillon Sauvignon Blanc Riesling Cabernet Sauvignon Ruah (red meritage) Merlot Syrah Barbera Sangiovese Late Harvest Gewurztraminer Vineyards All wines are produced using estate fruit from the Desert Wind and Sacagawea vineyards on the Wahluke slope in Washington’s Columbia Valley. The vineyards are considered Zone 3, the hottest zone in the region. Temperatures often reach 110° F during the day but dip to a cool 50° F at night, producing ripe fruit with firm acidity. The 540 acres of vineyards face south with a two percent downhill slope; soil is shallow and rocky with excellent drainage.
