Red Ribbon Week
This week we spent time talking about our Red Ribbon week
theme and how we can “STOMP Out Bullying.” Mrs. Park came
in and read the book, Enemy Pie, which is a great story about
friendship. We discussed what bullying looks like and how we can
comprehend and remembering what we read. To help the children
think about different ways to make connections, the children
learned, “The Connection Song”. Ask your child to sing this fun
song to you and teach you the movements…it’s to the tune of
“Brush Your Teeth”.

Halloween Party
Our class Halloween party is next Friday from 2:00-2:45.
Prior to the party, the children will show off their Halloween
costumes by participating in the school-wide Halloween parade
throughout the halls. Below are some important reminders about
Halloween:
•
Children will have about 15 minutes to change into their
costumes. Please have your child practice changing into
his/her costume with minimal assistance.
•
Label EVERYTHING: costume, costume accessories, the
bag the costume travels to school in, even the clothes your
child wears to school if he/she needs to take them off to put
on his/her costume.
•
Children should come to school in their regular school clothes;
they should not wear their costumes to school. However, if
your child is being a black cat for Halloween, for example,
he/she can wear all black clothes to school if that is part of
the costume.
•
All food for the party should be dropped off at school
between 9:00-9:30 on Friday or have your child bring the
addition strategies. We have been focusing on adding by counting
on, adding using double facts, and using double facts to find
doubles plus one and doubles minus one. We created a “Double
Checker” flipchart in class to “double check” our double facts.
Each child brought a sample home to use while completing
homework or playing any of the math games that are sent home.
To help your child at home, spend some time practicing addition
facts with sums to 10. Helping your child increase his/her
addition fact fluency will be very beneficial as we move forward
with addition and problem solving.
Old Friends have finished Chapter 2 and began working
on Chapter 3. They will bring the Chapter 2 workbook home next
week. Any unfinished pages do not need to be done as homework,
but feel free to use the workbook as a review. Chapter 3 is
focusing on single digit addition and subtraction. Our first lesson
focused on the “doubles plus 1 and doubles minus 1” facts. If the
problem was…4+5=?, students can choose either 4+4+1=9 or
5+5-1=9. This is just one strategy students can use. We will
continue to work on other strategies.
