Friday, March 24, 4:00 PM A Fine Romance: The Songs of Jerome Kern Performed
by Will McMillan and Joe Reid, Morrison Theatre. Jerome David Kern left a legacy of
over seven hundred songs written for more than one hundred stage productions and
Hollywood films. His best-known work, Show Boat, broke new ground in 1927 with its
realistic characters, controversial subject matter, and dramatically integrated songs.
Never before had issues of miscegenation, wife desertion, alcoholism, and gambling
been the subject of a hit musical — one which continues to be revived to this day.
Kern collaborated with many great lyricists including Oscar Hammerstein II, Johnny
Mercer, P. G. Wodehouse, E.Y. (“Yip”) Harburg, Ira Gershwin, Jimmy McHugh, and
Dorothy Fields and his songs won the Academy Award for Best Song in a Motion
Picture twice. Singer Will McMillan and pianist Joe Reid find great pleasure in
performing Kern classics including "Pick Yourself Up," "I Won’t Dance," "Smoke Gets In
Your Eyes," "The Song Is You “Ol’ Man River,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Bill,” "I’m
Old Fashioned," and “Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man."

Saturday, March 4, 2:00 PM Great Courses Video Lecture Series: Masterworks of
American Art, Morrison Theatre.
A nation's identity is expressed through its art. Great painters capture the essence of a
culture's brightest hopes, deepest anxieties, and most profound aspirations. They
provide an aesthetic road map to a nation's history, recording the lives of its citizens and
reflecting the personality of an entire people.
But all too often, Americans themselves are unfamiliar with the great artistic legacy of
their own country. Many of us study the great artists of Europe—Leonardo and Rubens,
Degas and Monet—but neglect the remarkable painters of our own national tradition.
Your guide is Professor William Kloss. A noted scholar and art historian, Professor
Kloss has taught more than 100 courses as an independent lecturer for the Smithsonian
Institution's seminar and travel program. Through 24 engaging and informative lectures,
he shares his deep passion for the art of this nation while offering remarkable insights
into the relationship between America's history and its art.
