Application and relevance of this lesson to:
OTHER SUBJECTS: UAE STUDIES- Demography of age structure of the population of UAE( July 2012)

DIFFERENTIATION & EXPECTATIONS: Skills, knowledge, understanding, application etc
STUDENTS’
PRIOR
LEARNING:
What do they
already know?
Students understand percentages as the number of parts in every 100. They recognize the
equivalence between ½ and 0.5, ¼ and 0.25, 1/10 and 0.1, 1/100 and 0.01 and between
decimal and fraction forms of other tenths and hundredths.
OUTCOMES:
ALL MUST BE
ABLE TO

Understand percentage as the number of parts in every 100 and express simple
fractions as percentages.
OTCOMES:
MOST SHOULD
BE ABLE TO

Find percentages of numbers and quantities.
OUTCOMES:
THE MORE
ABLE COULD

Be able to work out a quantity as a percentage of another.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES (through: thinking, seeing, listening, talking, doing, reading, writing etc)
Timings
5 mins
Starter:
Using slides on a power point revise finding one tenth of numbers such as 40, 200, 480…practice recall of
simple fraction and percentage equivalents. Students record answers on mini white boards.
10 mins
Teaching Component: 10 minutes MAXIMUM
Explain to find 50% of a number you have to halve it, to find 25% of a number you find the quarter of it
and to find what 10% of the number is you divide it by 10
Ask students to find 50% and then 25% of £100 Why is working with £100 easy? Can they do the same
for £50? What is 75% of £50? Ask how you work out 10% of a number. Make sure that they all
understand that it is equivalent to 1/10 and that you need to divide by 10 to find one tenth of something.
Do some examples and ask students to explain how they worked them out: 10% of £20, 200 m, 140 cm,
45. If the last example were £45, what would the answer be?
By knowing the decimal equivalents of the different percentages students can calculate percentages ( 99,
78%, 32% etc) of different quantities.
Cross curriculum- Discuss in groups the statistics of the age structure of the total population of the
UAE. Data is provided to each group.
Application
Explain what is meant by discount or reduction and how this can be applied to prices. Show some
newspaper ads featuring these terms. Model a calculation: 25% off £50. What is the new price? Make
sure the children understand that there are two steps involved; working out 25%, then subtracting this
amount from the original sum.
Development: What will they do?

percentages 10%, 20%, 25%,
50%, 75%, 60%, 120%) of
various numbers and quantities.
In their books students work out
percentages 10%, 20%, 25%,
50%) of various numbers and
quantities.
Plenary/review of learning: (5 minutes)
Activity:
5 – 6mins
Discuss the variety of percentages found. Make sure that everybody in each ability group knows how each
was calculated. Include percentages of prices expressed in pounds and pence.
What happens if the price is increased by 10%? … 5%? … 30%? How would they tackle these?
As a follow-up, find percentages other than those that are multiples of 5; use percentages such as 97%,
23%, 11% and so on
Homework is set.
