West III M.Ed. Assistant Principal The start of another year round school year brings great promise. Goals, vision, mission, and ambition are just a few words that I think of as it relates to this 2008-2009 school year. I am equally excited for our middle school program this year. We are working with a great program from The Ohio State University this summer. This program is under the Center for the Study of Teaching and Writing. It will take roughly 24 middle school students and expose them to rigorous training and development. These students will develop an e-Newspaper for the school. I am looking forward to this program for many reasons. The impact that this will project will have on our school will be astronomical. It will give students the opportunity to grow and gain experience in areas that they have not been exposed to yet. It will transform our school to have a newspaper generated by students. Students will be working on their literacy skills and also addressing district standards for English Language Arts. They will be interviewing fellow students working on communication skills and writing skills. This could be a major transformation of our middle school as it relates to reading, communicating, writing, and speaking. New Journalists on the Rise at CAEC The power of the pen is definitely in operation as new journalists are on the rise at the Columbus Africentric Early College in Columbus, Ohio. The school has had an established partnership with The Ohio State University’s Center for the Study and Teaching and Writing (CSTW) since 2000. Together they both work with students on their writing by providing an after school tutoring program. And now this partnership is endeavoring to launch this e-newspaper publication and have it produced by middle school students during an in class summer 2008 program. Both Africentric and CSTW are excited about the kick off of this program. This first issue is centered on the début of our contributing journalists. Through their writings you’ll find a love for writing and life that will hopefully continue to be present in future issues! Thanks to Donor Susan E. Brown! The mission of the Outreach Program in the Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing is to work cooperatively with schools to identify needs, enhance writing instruction, and develop after school and in-school literacy programs. Richard “Dickie” Selfe is the director. Our donor Susan E. Brown also shares a common interest in our literacy initiatives. We thank you Mama Brown for your generous donation toward our first summer middle school outreach project! I really have a knack for sports. I play all kinds of sports like football, soccer, basketball, track, and tennis. I am really good at them all. You can just call me an all around athlete because I show it. I have a lot of friends at this school. I have went to this school for 3 years so I know a lot of info about this school like what we have for lunch, what are the sports, and what are the headlines. I also have had typing lessons. When I was younger, I had always wanted to go to this school and write. And I am about to tell you more about me. I care about my life, and what I like about this school is that I like reading, writing, and typing. There are lots of books that I like. And I also read other books like Harry Potter sequels. I enjoy chilling in my room and watching shows but I also enjoy playing the game to gain my comfort. I had started a paper route for the Whitehall society where I had made my extra money. I had a lemonade stand while I was doing the paper route. As I was doing my paper route one time I just sat down and read the whole newspaper. I liked the comedy and political sections the best. It was really good to chill and relax and read it. I wanted to be a writer because I like the text of the newspaper and I wanted to have my little piece in the newspaper. One of the main reasons is because writing excites me. I also like writing about different genres and categories and different stuff and the all the kinds of stories and articles. I have come to this place and position to write and let my mind explore so I can have fun and academic success. I love writing. About Me! When I get older I want to change the way cars are made, like having a car that runs on water, because gas prices are just going to get higher and higher. I also like running track. I mostly like doing the 100 meter or 200 meter. People say I’m pretty fast because I’m one of the fastest people on my team. he main reason why I want to write for The Nubians Info is because I wanted to try something new and see what it will be like. These are some things about me. “8th grade speaks out!” David Silver, grade 8 Hello school my name is David Silver, and I go to Africentric Early College School. I’m one of the reporters for “Nubian Info.” I’m doing this because I love to write and read. My favorite sports are basketball, football, and golf. I was born July 28, 1995 at Mount Carmel Hospital East. I have two bothers but I’m the youngest. Growing up wasn’t hard but it wasn’t easy either because my dad wasn’t around at the time so my mom had to take care of me. So now since I’m all grown up my dad just came back into my life. My favorite things to do and like are reading book like “The Pact” the book about “coming of age in Mississippi,” and “Up from Slavery.” My favorite sports teams are Ohio State Buckeyes, Kentucky wilds cats, Columbus Crew, and Boston Red Sox. When I’m not reading, watching TV, or playing a sport during the summer, I’m normally at home with my mom. The things that I do at home are read, play the game, and draw creations. When I’m outside I’m normally playing football, or going to the movies with my friends. I love the newspaper. I only get some chances to read the newspaper, like on Saturdays or on Sundays, or during the weekdays. This is why I am doing this, so I have a better chance at being a reporter for “The Nubians Info.” Maya Angelou was my inspiration for doing this. Antoinette Bradley, grade 6 Hi, my name is Antoinette Bradley, and I am the future best journalist. I love to write. I especially like to explain the truth about people. In other words, I love to do editorial writing. My other passion is to write biographies and my autobiography. I have always wanted to inform people about other people’s lives. I like to see what they have done, and I want to do some of the things they have, but I would like to go over the top with what I do. So when you see my name in The Nubians Info you know what it’s about. All Me! Stacey Holland, grade 6 Hi, my name is Stacey Holland and I am in 6th grade. I love basketball, soccer and baseball. I have two brothers, Roman and Khalil. My favorite things to do for fun are draw and play on the computer. I am a very nice and graceful person. If I was old enough, I would vote for Barak Obama. I like to give people advice. I would like to write for The Nubians Info because advice is important and if people need advice they can talk about their feelings to someone who won’t tell anybody else. Darik LaMar Artis, grade 7 Hello there! My name is Darik LaMar Artis. I was born in Columbus, Ohio, at Grant Hospital on January 15, 1996. My mom’s name is Konya Artis, and my dad’s name is Wheeler Burley Jr. I have 2 brothers and no sisters. I am the youngest. My oldest brother is 17 and the next one is 14. Being born in Columbus, has given me a great life. My parents just add more and more to the fun. Being 12 is fun but you also have to be cautious. There are a lot of bad things and bad people to be aware of also. Being an African-American, you are viewed differently in some people’s eyes. Like you might be walking down the street and get pulled over by the police for no reason or just because they feel like it or they are suspicious. Now going to Columbus Africentric Early College is really different. We go yearround. We get out of school on May 26th and come back June 30th. Our school has an elementary school, middle school, and high school all in one building. Middle school and high school go year round. Elementary school is like a regular school. We had 4 principals. One principal is for elementary and middle-school, and two are for the high school. They were just re-assigned to different schools. So now our new principals are Dr. Thompson, Mama Brown, and Mama Kimbrow. I’m in the seventh grade. I get good grades. My cumulative GPA for the sixth grade was a 3.925. This school year a seventh grader is better then being in sixth. You get more respect and you have higher standards. The teachers and administrators expect more out of you. You know the system and you know what the routine is. As when you are in sixth grade they are a little more lenient because you are the smallest kids in middle school. The things I like to do are play basketball and football. I am a sport’s fanatic. I love watching pro-football games on Sundays. I also like to watch NCAA football games. I don’t like the Ohio State Buckeyes. I like the Michigan Wolverines. GO BLUE!
