Learning is a pleasure at the People’s College. For low cost, professionally organised courses for
adults, over forty courses to choose from.
STUDENT COMMITTEE In keeping with the ethos of the college the students
committee allows students to get involved and contribute ideas for courses and events. We
also help with the Syllabus, Enrolments, the Christmas Party and any other event the college
organises. We organise cultural, social activities and educational activities that we think will
appeal to students. The outings we organised during 2014/2015 included: Tour of 1798 Sites in
Dublin • Tour of the Unitarian Church, Stephens Green • Tour of St. Audeon’s Church • Tour
of Waterways Ireland Tour, Grand Canal Place • Tour of Marshes Library, St. Patricks Close
• Tour of Parnell square (in relation to 1916) • Talk by Fr.Brian Shorthall ‘The Story of the
Rebel Priests’
All events are advertised by leaflets in the class rooms and on the College Website.
As a committee we try to represent all students, currently our members are from various courses
i.e. Current Affairs, Art Appreciation, various Language Classes, Music Appreciation and the
Debating Society. If you are interested in joining the committee or becoming a representative
for your class / group please contact: Bernie Grant 01-8481650, Tony Black 01- 4531568
DRAMA GROUP Following the success of the Percy French Show (See it on
YouTube) Dubbaliners, and Home Truths (a new play written by a group member) and JackKnives and Buckshot by Mick Halpenny (in association with the People’s College Choir and
Jimmy Kelly Band) enthusiasm is high to pursue new and challenging ideas for the autumn and
winter terms. With having fun in a creative and supportive environment high on the agenda
there may be a few places remaining for anyone who feels there's not enough drama in their
lives. Led by playwright and actor Tom O'Brien, let treading the boards at Theatre@36 (Parnell
Square) become a reality for you by contacting the People's College Drama Group on 01 8735879
or [email protected]. (See Thursday classes p. 23)
CHOIR The People's College Choir has vacancies for a small number of new members in the
alto, tenor and bass lines; the soprano line is currently full. The choir, which has 48 members (28
female and 20 male), was founded in 1993 as part of the wider cultural programme of courses
and subjects offered by the People's College. The members come from the greater Dublin region
and the choir sings a wide range of musical styles; from madrigals, spirituals, and traditional
Irish airs to arrangements of modern popular songs. The choir generally performs at concerts
and college social events and has participated in festivals both at home and abroad, having
travelled to Denmark (2000), Italy (2004) and Austria (2008). The choir has taken part in
exchanges with other choirs which brought it to Spain (2010), France (2006 and 2013) and Wales
(2015). While the ability to read music would be a definite asset it is not by any means a
requirement for membership of the choir; indeed, most of our members do not read music. If
you can sing and hold a tune that is all that is required - we will teach you the rest! If you are
interested in joining please contact the Musical Director, Paul Walsh (via the college) or turn up
in advance at one our rehearsals which are held on Tuesday night at 8.30 pm in the Teacher's
Club (Club na Múinteoirí), 36 Parnell Square West. Our rehearsals resume on Tuesday 6th
September 2016.
DEBATING SOCIETY “It is better to debate a question without settling it than to settle a
question without debating it.” Debating is a great way to improve your communication and
listening skills. Our society is open to all, from total beginners, those who have never spoken
in public, people who may have debated in school a long time ago or anyone who thinks they
would like to try something different.
Our programme includes workshops on public speaking and ways to improve the ability to
think quickly on your feet which will benefit you in your personal and professional life people who can communicate well are always wanted in any profession.
Listed below are some motions / clubs we debated with during 2015/2016:
• That Dublin needs to build up rather than out (Engineers Toastmasters, Dublin)
• That Beauty Contests should be banned (Professional Toastmasters, Paris)
4
Peoples 32page 16-17_l 27/07/2016 05:33 Page 5

during the year on a variety of topics of social, economic, trade union & historic interest.
THE DECADE OF ANNIVERSARIES A series of 6 lectures will be organised
in Spring 2017 starting on Wednesday 25th January 2017 for 6 weeks and coordinated by
John Dorney. Description below; details will be available on line and from the College office
from November 2016.
IRELAND IN A REVOLUTIONARY WORLD The years of nationalist
revolution in Ireland were also years of world revolution. 2017 marks the centenary of the
best known, the Russian or Bolshevik Revolution. But in fact the Great War saw the collapse
of not one but three great Empires, the Russian, the Habsburg and the Ottoman, unleashing
a wave of nationalist and social revolutions throughout Europe. To mark this, the People's
College will be running a series of talks examining Ireland's role in a revolutionary world the comparisons and interactions between what was happening in Ireland and what was
happening elsewhere. For example, how did the Russian revolution affect Ireland? How
does Ireland's struggle for independence compare to Poland's? What are the parallels
between Finland's slide from national independence into Civil War and Ireland's.
UNDERSTANDING SOCIAL MEDIA – GETTING THE BEST
FROM YOUR LAPTOP Want to use your laptop or computer more? Maybe you
can send emails but want to know how to use the internet, fill in forms, book flights, maybe
even Skype? You might want to explore FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn. A six week course
will be organised in October. If you are interested, let us know - by phone, letter or email!
The People’s College was established in 1948 under official trade union auspices.

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY COACHING;
PUTTING THE SCIENCE OF HAPPINESS INTO YOUR LIFE
Lecturer: Elaine Metcalfe
Positive psychology is, first and foremost, an applied science. It looks at what
is right with people, focuses on when people are at their best, and attends to
individual and group flourishing. It does not focus on the positive at the
expense of the negative. Rather it recognises negative emotions failure and
problems as natural and important aspects of life, and produces positive
interventions and ways of working with people where the focus is on
promoting ‘superior functioning’. This is an interactive, self-development
course which will introduce strategies for the practice of improving essential
life skills, using the tools of Positive Psychology Coaching. It will demonstrate
how changing our approach or attitude to life can achieve real and sustainable
improvement, boosting our self-esteem, confidence-building, resilience,
emotional intelligence and much more! Positive psychology helps us become
happier, more optimistic and motivated. It can help us find meaning in life,
and wakes us up to the power of feeling good, thinking positively and acting
generously. Positive Psychology Coaching reveals the principles and practices
of positive daily living and how every aspect of your life can be improved with
Positive Psychology.
