We will be discussing the assigned pages on the stated days. Dialectical Journals (see below) will be due the day the chapter(s) is discussed. Hopefully this will force you to start thinking about the text in an analytical way before class. What is a Dialectical Journal? Introduction The term “Dialectic” means “the art or practice of arriving at the truth by using conversation involving question and answer.” Think of your dialectical journal as a series of conversations with the texts. The process is meant to help you develop a better understanding of the theme and characters in the texts we read. In our case the “conversation” will be held on turnitin.com discussion board. Procedure: 1. From your close reading, select 1 quote/passage for every chapter (CD) focused on at least one character that stands out to you and record them with in-text citation. You will have 12 entries by the end (12 chapters). 2. Using your annotations from your close reading, compose your paragraph response to the text (CM) – ideas/insights, questions, reflections, and comments on each passage) a. Responses must address analysis of indirect characterization and how that analysis further develops the theme b. Response must include correct quotation embedding and semi-colons, phrases and parallel structure when appropriate 3. You must label your responses using the following STEAL codes to indicate the focus of your analysis: a. You may address more than one type of characterization for in depth analysis i. (S) Says –the dialogue of the character ii. (T) Thoughts – the inner dialogue of the character iii. (E) Effects on others – the effect of the character on other characters iv. (A) Actions –what the character does alone or with other characters v. (L) Looks – the physical make up of the character (e.g. expressions, physical description, clothing) 4. You will be required to respond to one of your peers by making comments on their journal entry (at least 3 sentences each) For full credit: 1) You need to respond thoughtfully. Please do not depend on outside criticism or analysis for guidance on what to write. I am looking for honest responses. SparkNotes responses will receive an automatic ZERO. You will get caught. Don’t do it. It’s not worth your time or mine. 2) You must have all of your entries completed by the beginning of the period, on the day of discussion. Journals that are not submitted on time will receive half-credit. Sample DJ (follow the formatting of this entry): Chapter 1 – Ralph (A) At the beginning of Chapter 1: The Sound of the Shell, Piggy rushes off into the brush to go to the restroom begging Ralph to wait for him until he is done. Ralph then makes a decision that shows his character when he “disentangled himself cautiously and stole away through the branches. In a few seconds the fat boy’s grunts were behind him and he was hurrying toward the screen that lay between him and the lagoon. He climbed over a broken trunk and was out of the jungle” (9). This reveals many of Ralph’s characteristics. First, Ralph does not seem to care about others; Piggy asked him to wait, and Ralph just left. Second, Ralph seems independent; he does not need anyone to help him even though he is in a stressful situation. Third, Ralph seems courageous; he continues on alone through the jungle toward the beach, not knowing what to expect, fearlessly. Through Ralph’s action of leaving Piggy, he reveals that he is uncaring, independent, and courageous. These character traits might result in Ralph losing his innocence as a child, as he begins to act more as an adult. Sample Reply to Peer DJ (minimum of 3 sentences): Although Ralph seems to be uncaring, he also seems to care for Piggy in other parts of the chapter. Also, Ralph might end up being one of Piggy’s only friends since they met first. Incidentally, Ralph is more caring toward others than uncaring in this chapter.
