Welcome
The Summer Program offerings for the summer of 2017 have something for children of all ages. Below is a brief
description of each of the programs.
JUNIOR SAILING:
For the 2017 season, Sailing Director Wally Cross, and our newly hired Junior Sailing Director Michael Weber, have
reengineered the Junior Sailing Program offerings to accommodate sailing skill levels from learn to sail to competitive
racing. New to the program this year will be “Adventure Sailing.” This program is designed for children who want to
be on the water but not necessarily participate in competitive racing. Wally and Michael will introduce participants to
a variety of boats; explore navigation, boat mechanics and environmental awareness. A more detailed description of
Junior Sailing Program offerings is included in this brochure.
SAILFISH SWIM TEAM:
Head Swim Coach John Fodell and Assistant Swim Coach Bill Thompson, are looking forward to coaching the GPYC
Sailfish to a winning season. During the off-season, the Club purchased a new scoreboard for home swim meets. The
scoreboard will be situated in the northeast corner of the pool deck. It is on a scissor lift that can be raised for home
swim meets and then lowered while not in use. Good luck to GPYC Sailfish!
TENNIS:
Our head Tennis Professional, Dmitri Diakonov is primed and ready for a great children and adult tennis season. A full
menu of tennis offerings is included here in the Summer Programs Brochure.
The Family Recreation Center is an outdoor family entertainment complex. With four new Har Tru tennis courts, bocce
ball and basketball courts, plus pickle ball and a splash pad, there is something for the entire family to participate in. The
entire staff is looking forward to a great summer. The menu of new offerings is designed for the entire family.
For your convenience, online summer program registration will be available this year beginning Sunday, April 23. Simply
go to https://gpyc.campmanagement.com/enroll.
We hope you have a great summer.
Thank you,
Tom Trainor General Manager

SAILING PROGRAMS
The staff of GPYC Junior Sailing welcomes you to the 2017 season! Wally Cross is excited to be leading
our team of U.S. Sailing certified instructors. Each is a talented sailor and teacher, and we are confident
that you will be pleased with the progress students will achieve. Together, they will work to meet the
individual needs and sailing goals of all interested members.
Sailing Director, Wally Cross
A sailmaker since 1973 and a professional sailor since 1985, I have raced in over 1,000 sail boat races.
I have also sailed over 100,000 miles in the ocean to Hawaii, Bermuda, Peru, England, Italy, Sweden,
Finland, Russia, Australia, Spain and France. I have competed in over 80 Mackinac Races, and was on
winning boats for 12 North American Championships and six Canada’s Cups events.
As the full time Sailing Director for the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, it is my goal to bring sailing back
to Lake St. Clair and the GPYC. I am involved with High School sailing in the spring and fall, Junior
Sailing during the summer, and Adult Sailing all year long. We will now have a new J 70 One Design
fleet on Lake St. Clair with 20 boats. At the GPYC, we will host the Mallory in High School sailing and
the Junior Olympics for Junior Sailors in late July. Our Annual Summer Regatta will be Friday, July 8,
followed by a summer party. Last will be the Bluenose Regatta on September 24. The Grosse Pointe
Yacht Club is the finest club not only on the Great Lakes, but in the world for sailors. This fresh water
lake is just seconds from any dock and all sailing can be viewed from our docks and Club. It is my
mission to make sailing entertaining and close to the dock for viewing. We look forward to having our
own separate sailing building on the South East Wall.

JUNIOR SAILING PROGRAM
Junior Sailing Director Michael Weber
Michael started sailing lessons on Lake St. Clair when he was nine years old. Six years later he became
a sailing instructor. Over the years his sailing career expanded as a sailing coach and director. In total,
he has been working as a coach in some way or another for almost 25 years.
For the past ten years Michael has specialized in coaching small keelboats like the J/22’s and 420’s.
Weber has coached students from age three to 90, proving that sailing is a life-long sport.
Weber’s short term goals are to build an excellent staff of coaches for the Junior Sailing Program
and identify young sailors with athletic ambitions and get them the right support in the program
to support their development. Additionally, Michael plans to put processes in place to improve and
upkeep our GPYC’s fleet of boats and equipment.
All junior sailing programs offer a 10% discount for GPYC member families who register more than one child.

ADULT SAILING PROGRAM
2017 will be a fantastic year for sailing at the GPYC.
With the Marine Recreation Center opening in a few
short months and two completely restored J/22s ready
for evening sails on Lake St. Clair, now is the perfect
time for adults to learn how to sail.
Sunset Sailing: Adult Learn to Sail Class
GPYC offers a two-hour Adult Learn to Sail class each Monday night, from 6 to 8 p.m.,
during the summer. Learn basic skills such as rigging, boat handling, steering with a tiller,
main and jib sail trim, entering and leaving the harbor, points of sail, wind, knot tying and sailing safety. The class is taught by
GPYC Sailing Director Wally Cross, who has 50 years of racing experience.
Once you have mastered these sailing abilities during the Basic Sailing Skills course, you will receive a skipper’s card. This card
entitles you to take out a J/22 with your friends. The J/22s have power for docking. Simply call Wally to reserve a time to sail.
In addition to the Basic Sailing Skills class, GPYC also offers these courses:
- Cruising Lake St Clair (Understand the lake, using GPS and VHF radio, set-up destinations)
- Learn to Race (Sailing the J/22 fast and trimming the sails for speed, understanding the race course)

Detroit. Head Coach John Fodell, Assistant Head Coach, Bill Thompson and their talented staff will guide swimmers following the
Sailfish Mission Statement:
“The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club Swim Team, in accordance with the swimming history of tradition and excellence at the Grosse Pointe
Yacht Club, is dedicated to providing the opportunity for members to experience the excitement of being part of a competitive swim
program. Under the direction of an experienced and passionate coaching staff, our goal is to provide a fun and safe environment in
which all may develop a healthy lifestyle, individual and team skills, and good sportsmanship.”
