While exercising and staying active is important during the hot summer months, it’s equally important to stay safe while outside in the heat. Swimming and playing outside under a water sprinkler are two ways to stay cool while burning calories this summer. You can burn 4.5 calories per minute by lightly treading water. Skipping through a water sprinkler can burn around 7 calories per minute. (The faster you run or swim, the more calories you’ll burn.) Play Hard, Play Safe! Dress in the Proper Clothing - In hot weather, children should be dressed in thin, light-colored clothing. Drink Fluids - Children should drink a glass of water about 15 minutes before they start exercising. If they're exercising in a warm environment, they should drink a large, lukewarm glass of water every 20 minutes during the activity. Lack of water can cause dehydration. Possible signs of dehydration include nausea and lethargy. If you ignore these signs, the body may go into heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
