scripture readings for the week of the trinity

SACRED HEART CHURCH
AUSTIN, TEXAS
HOLY WEEK: Together we prepare to celebrate the holiest time of the year.
Throughout Lent we have been preparing to commemorate the Lord’s Passion, Death
and Resurrection. Today, Palm Sunday, we begin to contemplate the Gospel account
of his last days and his crucifixion and resurrection.
CHRISM MASS: On Tuesday morning all the priests of the Diocese will celebrate the
Chrism Mass with the Bishop. (Mass will be at 10:30 am at St. Vincent de Paul Parish
in Austin. All are invited) At that Mass Bishop Vasquez will bless the Holy Oils that all
priests and parishes will use for the coming year. At 7 pm on Tuesday evening of
Holy Week, we will have a Chrism Mass here at Sacred Heart Parish to receive these
oils that will be used in our community.
TRIDUUM: Triduum mean 3 days. The Easter/Paschal liturgy requires three days in
length. The services are one, long liturgy commemorating Jesus’ Passion in three
liturgical settings. From ancient times we find that Holy Thursday Mass has no
closing, no dismissal. There will be no Mass on Good Friday, but only a Communion
Service after the service of the Passion of our Lord. There is no opening or dismissal
at this service. There is no Mass or Communion Service on Holy Saturday before the
Easter Vigil Mass. There is no formal opening for the Vigil Mass Saturday evening.
Only at the end of the Mass at Easter Vigil, the Mass of the Resurrection, will there be
a formal dismissal end blessing. The Resurrection is too great a mystery to celebrate
in only one day. The Triduum is one extended liturgical celebration spread over three
days. I pray you will try to worship the Triduum Paschal commemoration with us.
After the Holy Thursday celebration of the institution of the Eucharist and the
institution of the Priesthood, we enter immediately into adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament in another place (In the Cafeteria), while the Altar is stripped and the
Tabernacle is empty. We go to be with him in the Garden of Gesthemene, where he
prayed before his betrayal and arrest. Everyone is invited to pray with him until Midnight.
Good Friday: There will be two celebrations of the Passion of our Lord, one in
English at 3 pm in the Church, beginning with Stations of the Cross. The Second will
begin at 5 pm in Spanish, out on the field behind the PAC. It will include a live reenactment of the station of the cross.
Easter Vigil: At 8:30pm on Saturday we begin to celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection with
the Easter Fire and the reading of seven of the Old Testament stories and prophecies
that prepared God’s faithful to await the Messiah, his death and Resurrection. Then,
we celebrate the Mass of the Resurrection. We will also bring into the Church those
adults and young people who have been preparing for Baptism and the Sacraments.
In Holy Week we celebrate mystery NOT history. These liturgies do not take us
back in time but into what is happening now in our lives, today. We are invited to
enter into the mystery and anticipate our own Resurrection with the Lord. We are
reminded to keep the paschal fast on Good Friday and Holy Saturday until the Easter
Vigil. Fast and pray and give alms. In Holy Week we unite ourselves to Jesus, our
sufferings to his, so that we might also join with him in the Resurrection.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S PASSION
HOLY WEEK
We begin the holiest week of
the Church year on Palm
Sunday of the Lord’s Passion.
Palms are blessed and we
proclaim
Hosanna
(“give
salvation”) as Jesus enters
Jerusalem. We prepare our
hearts for the agony of His
Passion and Death, and the
glory of His Resurrection. The
Triduum (“three”) – Holy
Thursday, Good Friday and
Holy Saturday – “… stands at the center of the Good
News…. God’s saving plan was accomplished ‘once
for all’ by the redemptive death of His Son Jesus
Christ.” (Catechism #571) We celebrate the Last
Supper on Holy Thursday when Jesus gave us the
Eucharist as His true body and blood, and the
Sacrament of Holy Orders. On Good Friday we follow
Jesus through His passion and death, recalling that it
is “our sins [that] made the Lord Christ suffer the
torment of the Cross.” (Catechism #578) During Holy
Saturday we wait at the Lord’s tomb in prayer and
fasting, meditating on the events of Good Friday,
awaiting His Resurrection.
bendecidas y proclamamos Hosanna (danos
Pasion. Muerte y la Gloria de su Resurreccion. El Triduo
(tres) – Jueves Santo, Viernes Santo y Sabado Santo – “
permanece como la Buena Nueva. …

Iglesia St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Austin. Todos estan
invitados.)
TRIDUUM: Significa tres dias.
No
Resurreccion.
