Over 700 primary school children attended this event which involved competing in activities designed to introduce them to the run, jump and throw aspects of athletics. Mike Powell who holds the world Long Jump record also attended the event and talked to the athletes about the importance of nutrition. All of our students ran their activities in a very professional manner and represented the school well. They all received a T-shirt, sponsored by Nestle, to take home as a thank you for all their hard work. Well done everyone. Students involved were; Thomas Comins, Kullum Tobin, Nicholas Coles, Tyler Philpott, Reuben Cook, Hamish Kirkman, Daneka McHaffie, Sara Dore and Mykala Stewart. Riccarton Interchange On Thursday and Friday the school held its summer school sports’ interchange with Riccarton, a tradition that has been in place since 1958. Over this time there have been many exciting and close encounters that have helped to foster a healthy relationship of competition. Friendships Team meeting before the Mixed Touch Rugby have been made that last for many years, some beyond the confines of school. I would like to thank all of those parents and caregivers who opened their homes to take billets for this interchange. Without your generosity this special school event simply could not happen. To the students involved in the competition well done on a hard fought battle. You can be proud of your achievements. 1,000km Challenge As mentioned last week, the 1,000km Challenge is scheduled for Tuesday of next week. The long term forecast at this stage looks okay so we are all looking forward to a wonderful event. Students were issued with sponsorship cards last Friday, so hopefully they have been working towards that target of $30. This is the one major fundraiser for the year so we would really appreciate your assistance in encouraging your sons and daughters to get out and seek support from neighbours and friends. Thank you for your support. Such events are another way for us to build school spirit. The 1,000km Challenge is followed the next day by the Primary Schools’ Expo which brings in over 500 primary school students to KVC to experience many of the same activities our students were involved in the previous day. KVC students are not required at school on Wednesday as no normal classes will be running. All staff will be tied up in running the Sports’ Expo. Supervision will be provided for those who are unable to stay at home. Primary Schools’ Expo - Wednesday 11 March Students are not required at school as normal classes will not be running. There may be some supervision available for some students. Contact the main office if this is required. Please also check radios: Radio Dunedin 1305AM or 99.8FM, Newstalk ZB, for any cancellation. “Vaping” At a meeting of the Otago Principals last Friday all schools were made aware of the latest form of “legal high” which seems to be gaining some traction. Schools felt it was important to pass this information onto parents to make them more aware. It appears that a small number of young people are experimenting with a recreational form of inhaling substances called “vaping” (short for vaporising). The products used are commonly called ejuice or e-liquid. Equipment used for “vaping” may be electronic cigarette replacements (used by some people to try to stop smoking tobacco products), or larger devices which range from metal cylinders, which look like a small torch, through to various types of other paraphernalia. Having become aware that these products are available in Dunedin and online, we saw it as our responsibility to seek further information and advice, and to communicate this to parents and caregivers. The National Poisons Centre informs us that these substances may contain dangerously high levels of nicotine that can be part of the chemical mix as well as synthetic components - these may have unforeseen side effects, including changes to behaviour and mood. It is potentially seen as the next “legal high”. The substances and associated devices cannot legally be sold to young people under the age of 18. Principal Rick Geerlofs From the Board Chair The Board met on Wednesday for the first time in 2015, slightly later than normal due to some key people being unavailable at the end of February - our normal meeting time. Not that this has meant a quiet time for trustees with a variety of planning documents to read and to be understood. One very important document is the Analysis of Variation which reports on the performance of the College against the targets set for 2014. This is a document of some 80 pages and is at the heart of what we are all here for. The board is required to ratify this document and forward it the Ministry of Education by the end of March. At the commencement of the calendar year the Board Chair is required to vacate the Chair position and new nominations are sought. It is a privilege that I have once again been elected back into this position. Mrs Jeanette Aitken has also been re-elected as Deputy Chair. A regrettable, yet understandable resignation from the Board was received at the meeting; that of Mrs Sharon Bain. I thank Sharon for her contribution and input over the past eighteen months, in particular her work as Chair of the Special Needs Committee. The Board is now working through the formal replacement process. We also welcome new Parent Representative on the Board, Mr Lucas Brown, who has stepped into the role of Chair of the Finance Committee. We look forward to working with Lucas whose input to the 2015 budget, which requires a final sign off by the Board at our meeting in three weeks’ time, will be invaluable. This new book gives students a well-balanced view of the significance and background to New Zealand’s celebration of Waitangi Day. It is easy to read, with not too much text and has plenty of illustrations. United Nations International Women’s Day This event will be held at Toitu - Otago Settlers Museum on Sunday 8 March from 1.30pm to 5.00pm. This will be a great opportunity for young people to hear inspiring stories of women in leadership in Dunedin and Otago, as well as to learn about leadership opportunities for themselves. Stage Challenge – Rehearsal Time Change Rehearsal is now ONLY on SUNDAY between 1.00 and 4.00pm in the GYM. If students haven’t been yet, or would like to join they are still welcome. Casual Vacancy for an Elected Trustee A casual vacancy has occurred on the Board of Trustees for an elected parent representative. The Board has resolved under section 105 of the Education Act 1989 to fill the vacancy by selection. If ten percent or more of eligible voters on the school roll ask the board, within 28 days of this notice being published, to hold a by-election to fill the vacancy, then a by-election will be held. Any eligible voter who wishes to ask the Board to hold a byelection should write to: Mark Rogers, Chair Board of Trustees Kaikorai Valley College, 500 Kaikorai Valley Road, Bradford, Dunedin 9011, by: Thursday 16 April 2015 Brathwaite Centre News Student of the Week: Lily Grace Green - for fantastic achievement in hand writing. Junior Open Debating Day On Wednesday night Kaikorai Valley College hosted the Junior Open Debating Day, under the leadership of Ms Megan Wishart. Schools from throughout Otago arrived to give their juniors an opportunity to attend debating workshops and attend a show debate. The show debate was given by the Otago University Debating team. The trial rounds of the Junior Debating Competition start next week and the first actual debate will be held in the final week of Term 1. Well done to the KVC students who attended and participated so positively and with such great enthusiasm: Kesi Tobeck, Jacob Cone, Amanda Fiveash, Andrew Knight, Becky Kingswell and Peta McSkimming. Ministry of Education March Roll Return Any student absent for any reason on Monday 2 March must bring a note from home explaining their absence. (This applies to all school students in New Zealand.) If you have not done so already, and you have a child who was absent on that day, please give them a note or write in their log book the reason they were absent from school on 2 March for our March return. Many thanks. E Block Courts’ upgrade We have had our four tennis courts covered with turf over the Xmas holiday break. They are being well used by students for interval and lunchtime sports, for sports’ practices, Physical Education classes and by Homeroom Teachers for physical activity lessons. We are very grateful for the large grant of money from the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) who made this possible. We are also going to make the courts available for community groups to use outside of school hours.
