1. Letter by the Rector
Dear Sir/Madam,
First of all, I want to welcome you to the University of Barcelona by quoting
some Salvador Espriu’s words, as this year we are celebrating the 100th
birth anniversary of this great Catalan poet: “Founded on magnanimity, our
home will remain faithful to its high destiny and glorious things have been,
are and will be said of you, Alma Mater”
During its more than 560 years of history, the UB has successfully combined
tradition and modernity. At present, it tops the majority of international research rankings at a national level and it is one of the greatest excellence
poles in Europe. The UB has never avoided the leadership that an important
institution has to take over and it has assumed its major role as social, cultural and economic promotion agent in our country.
For five centuries, we have gone through dark periods and successful phases. We have always been a model in developing the tasks entrusted to university: student and citizen training and research promotion. The UB is committed to its country, and it is also aware of the new circumstances resulting
from co-living in a global world and the need to change the way of establishing relations in order to face new, and difficult, challenges of 21st century.
The event that gathers us at the UB, the First Arab-Euro Conference on
Higher Education, is the example that best proves our will of fostering dialogue and cooperation and exploring our institution from different realities,
departing from the idea that to have some common objectives is the key to
future success.
Even if it is true that this is not the first meeting among Arab and European
university institutions, it is the first conference organised together with the
European University Association (EUA) and the Association of Arab Universities (AARU), the main university associations in these two regions. The
conference will be an essential event that will mark a watershed in University of Barcelona’s history.
The University of Barcelona has progressively increased its international
projection on Arab countries. The attendance of more than 100 Arab rectors
proves it. The conference gives us the opportunity to strengthen academic
and research cooperation between both regions. The internationalization of
university education, students’ employment, mobility programmes, the
identification of new collaboration areas, and neighbourhood and solidarity
relations are some of the issues to be discussed throughout the conference.
Catalonia is an age-old country, built up by the influence of different traditions, customs and cultures, which obviously include Arab culture. The University of Barcelona is also made up of this diversity and it wants to be a link
between European countries and Arab ones, being also an entrance gate to
Latin American territory. The UB is the epicentre of this triangle; vertices
synergies promotion will be extremely positive.
Finally, I want to thank Dr Sultan Abu-Orabi, President of AARU, and Dr
Maria Helena Nazaré, President of EUA, for their support to make this meeting real, and the organizers of the conference. I am also grateful to all the
rectors, vice-rectors and university officials who have travelled to Barcelona
to attend the conference. I hope they enjoy their stay at the University of
Barcelona and the meeting to be beneficial for everyone.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Dídac Ramírez i Sarrió
Rector of the University of Barcelona
