POPCORN
Q: What is your favourite part of the activity?
By: Manel
Where does a corn kernel come from?
The corn that we typically eat is different than the kernels that
become popcorn. There is only one variety of maize that will make
it – Zea mays everta. It looks very similar to the typical corn kernel
but this variety is the only one that has the ability to pop and turn
into a delicious snack.
Why do corn kernels pop?
The corn for popcorn is a special kind of corn that is able to POP!
Inside each kernel of popcorn is a tiny droplet of water
surrounded by a
hard shell called a
hull. As the popcorn
is heated, the water
turns into steam,
which builds
pressure inside the
corn and when it is
too full it pops and
creates that lovely
popcorn we eat!

The Formation of Earth and
Space By: Delpine
The Big Bang is the way scientists believe that the Universe began.
It happened long in the past about 14 billion years ago. The Big
Bang was the beginning of everything they thought. Before that,
there was nothing at all, not even space. If fact, there wasn’t even
time, so nothing could happen before the Big Bang. The Big Bang
suggests that the Universe was born in a huge explosion. But,
when the universe began it was incredibly tiny. There was no “Big
Bang” or any sound at all because no air was able to carry sound.
After millions of years, Earth began to form as matter came
together. Earth’s surface is melted by heat from within as well as
collisions with other objects. Intense volcanic activity generates
gases, forming Earth’s early atmosphere. The planet cools, clouds
form and rain falls, producing early seas. Movements of parts of the
crust, called plates, shape landmasses.
open so they can watch for predators and other threats.

Interview about “Being in the Moment”
FUN FACTS ABOUT TECHNOLOGY
By: Myriam
By: Dana and Maria
Q: What is “Being in the Moment” activity?
A: Being-in-the-moment is the basic human ability to be fully
present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not
overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.
Q: What will you learn?
A: We will learn about being present and practice together through
games, songs and activities.
RoboCup is an annual soccer tournament for robots. It gives
robotics students and researchers a chance to test the design,
sensors, programming and autonomy (the ability to make decisions
and act without human help) of
their machines.
Creating successful robot
footballers may lead to the
development of robots that
will be able to work alongside
humans.

All about the Praying Mantis
RECIPE ON OATMEAL COOKIES
By: Ewan
By: Tia and Judi
The Praying Mantis is found on trees and bushes in warm
climates. It is often seen in gardens as it eats the insects that are
found there. It is called the Praying Mantis because of its further
forward bent front legs. Its legs are held at such an angle that it
seems to be praying. It is about 5-6 inches in length.
The Praying Mantis also uses its front legs to capture and hold its
prey. It has powerful eyes that can see about 50-60 feet away.
It camouflages itself among leaves as it hunts its food which is
mostly insects.
Ingredients:
½ a cup of oil
½ a cup of raw sugar
2 eggs
½ a cup of flour
1 full teaspoon of vanilla
¼ teaspoon of baking soda
½ cup of raisins
2 and ½ cups of oats
1 full spoon of cinnamon
Interestingly, it can
rotate its triangular
shaped head to
180 degrees on
either side.
Directions:
1. Mix oil, raw sugar and eggs together then add the vanilla.
2. Add the flour and the baking soda bit by bit.
3. Put the cinnamon and the raisins into the mixture.
4. Add the oats and mix together
5. Bake the cookies on a baking paper at 180 degrees Celsius
for 30 minutes.
6. Enjoy!!

2005 UEFA Champions League Final
By: Suhail
Movie Review
By: Ali
I had the pleasure of watching the movie “Swallows and
Amazons” at the Vox Cinemas in the Mall of the Emirates. The
Walker children are given permission to camp on an island in the
middle of a big lake.
When they get there, they have to battle against a gang of local
youths for control of the island. The boat of the Walker children is
called The Swallows and the boat of the children on the island is
called The Amazons. It becomes a big battle between the two
boats to see who can overtake each other and win control of the
island.
I would rate this movie a 10/10!!
In 2005 there was a big match for the UEFA Champions League
Final between Milan and Liverpool. Milan was one of the favourites
before the match and took the lead within the first few minutes. The
captain was Paolo Maldini Hernán Crespo scored two more goals
before half-time to make it 3–0. In the second half Liverpool had a
comeback and scored three goals in six minutes to make 3–3.
The scores remained the same during extra time, and a penalty
shoot-out was required to decide the champions. The score was 3–2
to Liverpool when Andriy Shevchenko's penalty was saved by
Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.
Liverpool won their fifth European Cup and was
awarded the trophy permanently. Liverpool's
come back gave rise to the final being known
as the Miracle of Istanbul, and is regarded as
one of the best moments of the club's history!

Mackenzie is jealous of her and continues to bully her. Nikki
doesn’t let her bully anymore and stands up for herself. She has
big problems at home with her little sister
Brianna and her parents.
There seems to be a lot of drama in
her life and each book has a new
problem and solution.
