June 2016 Dear Parents and Guardians Third Form

June 2016 Dear Parents and Guardians Third Form Summer Reading Challenge Please find enclosed a list for some summer reading for our incoming Third Form pupils. Each pupil must read at least one book from this list, and then write a piece of persuasive creative writing in excess of 300 words to convince the English Department that the whole Third Form should study it. If the English Department is convinced by someone’s entry then that novel may well be taught to future Third Form groups. More than one entry per pupil is allowed and all entries will be displayed in the English Department. The most persuasive and the most original entry from each English class will also receive a prize of Amazon vouchers. Stowe rewards are called Merits; all pupils will receive them for their effort which will also be noted by their House. The House that receives the most Merits for this challenge will receive a prize and will be announced in assembly. We hope that the pupils enjoy their reading over the summer. 'My name is August. I won't describe what I
look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's
probably worse.'
Auggie wants to be an ordinary ten-year-old.
He does ordinary things - eating ice cream,
playing on his xbox. He feels ordinary - inside. But
ordinary kids don't make other ordinary kids run away
screaming in playgrounds. Ordinary kids aren't stared at
wherever they go.
Born with a terrible facial abnormality, Auggie has been
home-schooled by his parents his whole life. Now, for the
first time, he's being sent to a real school - and he's
dreading it. All he wants is to be accepted - but can he
convince his new classmates that he's just like them,
underneath it all?
My Name is Mina David Almond
My name is Mina and I love the night. Then
what shall I write? I can't just write that this
happened then this happened then this
happened to boring infinitum. I'll let my journal
grow just like the mind does, just like a tree or a beast
does, just like life does. Why should a book tell a tale in a
dull straight line? David Almond revisits Mina before she
has met Michael, before she has met Skellig.
One – Sarah Crossan

But what neither Grace or Tippi realises is that a heartwrenching decision lies ahead. A decision that could tear
them apart. One that will change their lives even more
than they ever imagined...
