CLUBS & ACTIVITIES

ART ASSOCIATION
Advisors: Ms. Philip, Mrs. Breyer, Ms. Capurso
Meeting Place & Time: Art Room, 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month.
The Art Association gives student-artists the opportunity to discuss and critique different aspects of art and artrelated events. Students will organize and plan school-related and fundraising activities. At the end of the
school year, the club presents an Art Association Scholarship Award.
BUTTERFLY CLUB
Advisor: Mrs. Tienken
The Butterfly Club will be benefiting Makenzie Cadmus, who has a rare genetic connective tissue disease called
Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) that currently does not have a cure. This condition causes severe pain, along with
blisters that never heal. Eventually, some versions of this disease can turn into cancer where individuals
suffering can lose major organs and even limbs. The club will raise money for the family and bring awareness
to this condition. This club will be supporting a direct person, instead of an organization that collects the
fundraising money and disappears. The money that is earned from events will immediately to the source,
Makenzie’s parents. The money can be used to purchase things that Makenzie is in need of, and modify the
item to her necessity. People who join the club must consistently attend meetings. They also must contribute to
conversation and help exchange and elaborate on ideas. Anyone who would be interested in joining the club
can see the school nurse for further information.
CHESS CLUB

Meeting Place & Time: TBD
The Chess Club meets to learn about and play chess in a non-competitive environment. Students explore
strategies and techniques. Beginners are welcome.
CHINESE CLUB
Advisor: Mrs. Chen
Meeting Place & Time: Room 102, after school as needed
The Chinese Club explores Chinese language and culture, including customs, holidays, and traditions.
Members participate in movie nights, Chinese food parties, and Chinese craft making. The club also conducts
bake sales to raise money for field trips.
CHINESE HONOR SOCIETY

Meeting Place & Time: Room 102, after school as needed
The Chinese National Honor Society embraces high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Eligibility is open to any third year Chinese student in the eleventh or twelfth grade who meets the scholarship
requirement and displays fine character, leadership, and service to the school and community. During
membership, students will maintain their high standards and engage in various activities and fund-raising for
charitable causes. There is a President, a Vice- President, a Secretary, and a Treasurer.
COOKING CLUB
Advisor: Mrs. Gabrielsen
Meeting Place & Time: Room 104, after school as needed
The Cooking Club meets regularly after school to learn and practice culinary skills and various styles of
cooking. Club members collaborate in order to plan upcoming menus.
Dungeons & Dragons (D & D Club)
Advisor: Mrs. Cicarelli
Meeting Place & Time: Room 208, after school.
Due to the large D&D fan base at the high school, the club was created. D& D is a fantasy pen and paper roleplaying
game which is generally played with 3 – 7 players (can be more), one player takes on the role of DM (Dungeon Master)
the others take on the roles of individual characters that they create and navigate the world created by the DM. Players
must learn cooperation and teamwork, as well as, improve speaking skills and strategy. The rules can be taught to anyone
new to the game and welcome anyone who wants to join. Dungeons and Dragons is a game meant to encourage strategy
and creativity of the players.
DEBATE TEAM

Meeting Place & Time: Room 206, during and after school as needed
The Debate Team is a member of the Bergen County Debate League which currently consists of twenty-eight
local high schools and middle schools. Students compete on three levels: novice, junior varsity and varsity,
and use the national policy-debate resolve.
DECA (International Association of Marketing Students)
Advisor: Mrs. Gianfredi
Meeting Place & Time: Room 205, during class
DECA, part of the International Association of Marketing Students, is a co-curricular activity, composed of
students enrolled in Marketing classes. DECA develops the skills and principles of marketing-related activities,
so students are academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible and experienced leaders.
Goals are accomplished through the planning and execution of projects, events, and competitions.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS CLUB
Advisors: Mrs. Slater

The Environmental Awareness Club provides an opportunity for students to get involved with environmental
issues and concerns. Members take part in environmental activities such as tree planting, clean-up days,
recycling, composting. There is a President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.
FITNESS and NUTRITION CLUB
Advisor: Mr. Cimo
Meeting Place & Time: Room 1101, after school as needed
The Fitness and Nutrition Club promotes a healthy and active lifestyle for students and faculty by providing:
nutritious options through the monthly bake sales (fruit smoothies, apples and peanut butter), weekly workouts
in the gym and weight room, and meetings to plan healthy meals and activities.
FRENCH CLUB/LE CERCLE FRANCAIS
Advisor: Mrs. King
Meeting Place & Time: Room 101, the second Wednesday of each month
The French Club explores French language and culture, including customs, holidays, and traditions. Activities
may include attending a play in NYC, dining at a French restaurant, and visiting a French bakery. There is a
President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.
FRENCH HONOR SOCIETY

The French Honor Society embraces high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Eligibility
is open to any eleventh or twelfth grade student who meets the scholarship requirement and displays fine
character, leadership qualities, and service to the school and community. During membership, students will
maintain their high standards and engage in tutorial activities and fund raising. There is a President, a VicePresident a Secretary and a Treasurer.
GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE
Advisor: Dr. Massey
Meeting Place & Time: Room 209, twice a month
The GSA offers a safe environment for students and staff to learn about and support one another against antiLGBTQ name-calling, teasing, and harassment of any kind. The GSA is open to everyone regardless of sexual
orientation or gender identity.
HARVESTERS CLUB

The Harvesters Club promotes Christian fellowship in a safe environment.
INTERACT CLUB
Advisor: Ms. Kelty
Meeting Place & Time: Room 213, after school as needed
Interact gives students ages 12-18 the chance to make a real difference while having fun. Every Interact club
carries out two service projects a year: one that helps their school or community and one that promotes
international understanding.
Clubs meet at least twice a month and are sponsored by their local Rotary club
LATIN CLUB
Advisor: Dr. Massey
Meeting Place & Time: Room 209, every Wednesday at 3:00 P.M.
The Latin Club strives to make students aware of the importance the Latin language has in our lives. Members
discuss the English words, which are derived from Latin and are commonly used on the PSAT and SAT.
Students will listen to guest speakers, visit museums, and conduct bake sales to raise money for field trips to
artistic points of interest.
LATIN HONOR SOCIETY

The Latin Honor Society constitutes those students who have met several requirements spanning scholarship,
character, and willingness to exhibit service. Students must maintain the highest academic standards and accept
the challenge of continuing their Latin studies at the AP level. They serve the wider community by making
themselves available to tutor students of lower levels, as well as maintain active membership in the Latin Club,
serving in a leadership role and promoting its activities. The Latin Honor Society elects two Consuls (executive
officers), a Treasurer, and a Secretary.
LEONIA LIMELIGHTERS

Meeting Place & Time: Little Theatre, after school
The Leonia Limelighters is the drama club at Leonia High School. Students from all grades and all levels of
experience explore all aspects of theatrical production through a Fall play and a Spring musical. Students are
taught the artistic, creative, and technical aspects of theatre production. Each show takes 8 – 10 weeks from
audition to performance, during which time students attend rehearsals after school anywhere from once a week
to every day. Students can participate in the Limelighters as members of the stage crew or pit orchestra.
THE LEONIAN
Advisor: Ms. Millar
Meeting Place & Time: Media Center, in class & after school as needed
The Leonian, a co-curricular/for-credit class as well as an exciting extra-curricular activity, is the online voice
of Leonia High School, where students create content for our digital newspaper, www.theleonian.com. The
school newspaper communicates student ideas and opinions and makes the community aware of policy changes,
school news, club and athletic activities, and school-related events. Students develop “hands-on” journalistic
experience, including the planning, writing, and design of the newspaper. Students interested in submitting
stories, articles, photographs, and/or artwork for publication are encouraged to become a member of the
Leonian staff.
LION’S PRIDE

The Lion's Pride is the Leonia High School yearbook, a co-curricular/for-credit class as well as an exciting
extra-curricular activity. Students can participate in a variety of activities, including photography, literary,
graphics, business, and layout design, in cooperation with the staff. The Lion's Pride creates a beautiful
remembrance of high school life. Experience is not necessary to be involved in the yearbook.
MATH LEAGUE TEAM
Advisor: Mrs. Markus
Meeting Place & Time: Cafeteria
The Math League Team is composed of students who participate in interscholastic mathematics competitions.
Each member prepares for topics in specific mathematics areas and completes six tests a year.
MOCK TRIAL TEAM

Meeting Place & Time: Room 213, after school as needed
The Mock Trial Team is a select group of students who have an interest in the legal system and the functions
performed by lawyers and witnesses in a court room. Through the Vincent J. Apruzzese New Jersey Mock
Trial Program, students compete against local schools at the Bergen County Courthouse, and then have the
chance to advance to the state competition. In the process of learning the operation of law, court procedures,
and the legal system, students develop life and leadership skills such as listening, speaking, writing, reading,
and analyzing.
MULTI-CULTURAL CLUB
Advisor: Mrs. Scott
Meeting Place & Time: Room 201, after school as needed
The Multi-Cultural Club promotes inter-cultural understanding and friendship. In addition to other activities,
members plan “We Are All Americans” Day. Proceeds from this event are donated to a scholarship for a
deserving senior club member and/or to a charity chosen by the members. Open to all students.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Advisor: Mrs. Bozik
Meeting Place & Time: Room 208, after school as needed
The National Honor Society embraces high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Eligibility is open to any student in the eleventh or twelfth grade, who meets the scholarship requirement and
displays fine character, leadership, and service to the school and community. During membership, students will
maintain their high standards and engage in tutorial activities and fund raising for a number of charitable causes.
Each year in conjunction with the Blood Center, the Honor Society organizes a blood drive of students, faculty,
and townspeople. There is a President, a Vice- President a Secretary and a Treasurer as well as a Blood Drive
Chairperson.
PEER LEADERSHIP
Advisors: Ms. Bucceri, Mr. Cocco, Mrs. Melone
Meeting Place & Time: Guidance, during the school day
Peer Leaders are nominated by faculty members and apply to become peer leaders during their junior year.
Peer Leaders assist with the freshmen orientation, as well as co-lead discussions with freshman on a variety of
issues including transitioning to high school, bullying, respect, time management, and student life at Leonia
High School.
PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB
Advisor: Mrs. Breyer
Meeting Place & Time: Room 108, every Wednesday after school
The Photography Club is intended for those who are interested in learning about photography. Members
participate in field trips and fund-raising activities, including Pictures with Santa Claus. All students are
welcome regardless of their grade or artistic background.
POETS AND WRITERS CLUB/LITERARY MAGAZINE
Advisor: Ms. Millar/Ms. Sommer
Meeting Place & Time: Room 203, each Monday after school
The Poets and Writers Club publishes the school literary magazine, which includes photos, drawings, and other
artwork along with original student writing. Poets and Writers sponsors Beat Night, an evening of readings,
skits, and music during which the Little Theater is transformed into a 1950s-era beatnik cafe; writing workshops
with students at ACS; and other activities that encourage students to write and appreciate good writing. Open to
all students.
QUIZ BOWL
Advisor: Mr. Sassi, Mr. Gugick, Dr. Bertolini
Meeting Place & Time: Library, after school as needed
The Quiz Bowl team competes in academic tournaments, answering questions related to history, literature,
mathematics, science, sports, and pop culture. Tournaments are held at the Marine Academy for Science and
Technology, High Tech Academy, Monsignor Donovan, Phillipsburg, and Colonia. The LHS Quiz Bowl team
sponsors NorJAC – the North Jersey Academic Championship every December. New members are welcomed
throughout the school year. If you enjoy competition, Jeopardy and academic excellence, become a Quiz Bowl
participant.
RIBBON CLUB
Advisor: Mrs. Antonucci
Meeting Place & Time: Room 103, periodically throughout the year.
The Ribbon Club promotes cancer awareness and organizes fundraising events to benefit the fight against
cancer. During the month of October, the club sells pink items to raise awareness and funds for the North
Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure©. On Passionately Pink Day, students, teachers, and
administrators wear pink to show their support. The club hosts bake sales, sells merchandise, and organizes
other fundraising events.
SCIENCE LEAGUE
Advisors: Dr. Copp, Mr. Tharian
Meeting Place & Time: Room 1104, twice a month
The Science League is composed of subject-specific teams which take part in interscholastic competitions in the
sciences. To achieve each member’s individual potential, team members study advanced topics in specific
subject areas in preparation for competitions held from January through April.
SERVICE CLUB
Advisor: Mrs. Scott
Meeting Place & Time: Room 201, after school as needed
The Service Club encourages students to become concerned members of the community. Through fundraisers
and hands-on participation, members support organizations and causes of local, national and international
concern such as the Leonia Health Fair, Leonia Day, the Special Olympics, Shelter Our Sisters, the Red Cross,
UNICEF, the Center for Food Action, Toys for Tots, March for Babies, and our annual Senior Citizen
Appreciation Dinner.
SEWING AND FASHION CLUB

The Sewing and Fashion Club promotes fashion and design by giving students the opportunity to learn and
practice sewing skills as well as plan fashion events.
SPANISH CLUB

SPANISH HONOR SOCIETY/ SOCIEDAD HONORARIA HISPANICA

The Spanish Honor Society embraces high standards of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
Eligibility is open to any eleventh or twelfth grade student who is enrolled in Spanish IVH or AP Spanish,
meets the scholarship requirement, and displays fine character, leadership, and service to the school and
community. During membership, students will maintain their high standards and engage in tutorial activities
and fund raising for a number of charitable causes. There is a President, a Vice- President a Secretary and a
Treasurer.
STUDENT SENATE

Meeting Place & Time: regularly during homeroom
The Student Senate of Leonia High School allows students to assist with school activities, coordinate extra
curricular activities, and promote school spirit. The Student Senate develops leadership skills and encourages a
positive school environment. Elections for sophomores, juniors, and seniors take place in the spring; freshmen
elections are held in September.
CHAMBER CHOIR
Advisor: Mr. Dunn
Meeting Place & Time: Room 2207, every Monday 6:30 to 8:00 PM.
The Chamber Choir is a select ensemble that strives to reach the highest possible level of excellence in the
Choral Arts. The Chamber Choir performs at school concerts, ceremonies, graduation, and area venues.
Students are selected by audition and are encouraged to be enrolled in concert choir.
MEN’S CHORUS
Advisor: Mr. Dunn
Meeting Place & Time: Room 2207, every Thursday 3:00-4:30 PM
The Men’s Chorus is a “by audition” group. Those who plan to audition should have participated in the High
School Chorus for a minimum of one year, or have the permission of the instructor. The Men’s Chorus
performs both on and off of the school campus, singing standard choral repertoire. Musical experience is not
necessary to sing in the chorus, but is helpful.
WOMEN’S CHOIR
Advisor: Mr. Dunn
Meeting Place & Time: Room 2207, every Wednesday 6:30-8:00 PM
The Women’s Choir is a select ensemble that strives to reach the highest possible level of excellence in the
Choral Arts. Female students who have reached an advanced level of singing and musicianship are selected by
audition. The Women’s Choir performs advanced music from the standard choral repertoire and plays at school
concerts, honors ceremonies, graduation, and at local area venues.
ADVANCED INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES
Advanced Instrumental Ensembles are co-curricular, by-audition (or by permission of the instructor) activities,
comprised of students who participate in the Instrumental Music class, as listed in the Program of Studies.

The Jazz Ensemble is a “by audition” group for those students who have an interest in exploring and
performing music from the standard jazz repertoire. The jazz ensemble performs both in school and off
campus.
The Wind Ensemble is for advanced students who are in the concert band or recommended by the instructor.
The wind ensemble performs advanced concert band literature, both on and off the school campus.
STRING ENSEMBLE

Meeting Place & Time: Room 2207, as determined by advisor
The String Ensemble, a co-curricular activity, is for advanced students who study and perform chamber music
for strings drawn from classic literature. Students perform at the Ensemble Concert in February and appear at
fund raising events, community service venues, and school functions.
FITNESS CENTER
Meeting Place & Time: daily from 3:15 - 4:15 PM.
The Fitness Center will be open each day for students - athletes and non-athletes alike - to use the equipment. A
coach or LHS staff member is available to supervise the Weight Room during this time.
