Winter
Crowdfunding Campaign
Raises over $300,000 and Mary’s Place
Opens Winter Emergency Family Shelter
More than 550 families, mostly single mothers and children, have no safe place to sleep at night. On November 12th,
a very generous and caring group of sponsors, Dick’s Drive-in Restaurants, evo, Evolution Projects, Vulcan Inc., the
Space Needle/Seattle Hospitality Group, and the Harrelson family, teamed up with the Seahawks Women’s Association
and kicked off a crowdfunding campaign to make sure that No Child Sleeps Outside this Winter.
With the help of additional donations from companies and organizations like Windermere Foundation, Lennar
Multifamily Communities, BECU, and the Scan Design Foundation, and an outpouring of support from the community,
the campaign reached and exceeded its ambitious goal of $250,000, raising more than $300,000 and donations
continue to pour in!
The Seahawks Women’s Association (SWA) visited Mary’s Place with Blitz and BOOM to kick-off the campaign and
arranged for many of our kids to visit the Seahawks training facility to meet players like Steve Hauschaka and Russell
Wilson, kick some field goals and throw some touchdowns!
“My family, our customers and employees at Dick’s Drive-In Restaurants, are gratified by the community’s response
to this campaign and proud to play a role.”said Saul Spady, President
of Cre8ive Empowerment, the creative force behind the campaign.
The funds are already at work helping to move families out of our
shelters and into permanent housing, paying first and last months
rent and providing moving assistance. And in early February, Mary’s
Place will open a temporary winter family crisis shelter in the Little
Saigon neighborhood of the International District.
The new Jackson Street shelter will house up to 20 families at night
in a building generously leased to us by the Low Income Housing
Institute (LIHI). The Jackson Street shelter will be open through April.
Lula’s Place Winter
Shelter Opens
Lula’s Place.
Thanks to the generosity of Vulcan, Inc., Lula’s Place, a night
shelter that is home to eight East African family members, opened in December in South Lake Union. Vulcan is
making the home available to our families for the winter months.
The house was the early office of Mary’s Place when it was a program of the Church of Mary Magdalene and we’re
excited to be back!
Lula is an East African name that means “abundance”, and there is certainly an abundance of love and hope at
Lula’s Place!

HO HO HOliday Fun!
It was a busy holiday season at Mary’s Place! All through
December workplaces, churches, clubs, and organizations
distributed gift tags with gift requests for kids, moms, and
dads. Hundreds of our supporters contributed to the Gift
Fund online as well, and thanks to your generosity, Santa
was able to provide holiday magic to all our families!
to the spacious Seattle Center Exhibition Hall where we hosted a
Holly Jolly Holiday Party for nearly 700 homeless and low-income
men, women, and children on Saturday, December 13th. More than
400 volunteers made the day special by helping to spread holiday
cheer, greet guests, serve pizza, help kids shop for their parents at
the Santa Store, wrapped presents, and much more! Many guests
received warm coats; kids got party dresses and suits, and all
received a gift card for a new pair of shoes.
Our annual holiday party and meal got so big we moved it

A Message from Marty Hartman, Executive Director
EVERY
YEAR WE REPORT DRAMATIC INCREASES IN THE NUMBER OF WOMEN, CHILDREN AND
FAMILIES THAT WE ARE SERVING, AND 2014 WAS NO EXCEPTION. At the end of January, the
Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness completed their annual One Night Count. At
least 3,772 men, women, and children were without shelter during the three-hour street count, a
21% increase over last year. This number is always assumed to be an undercount, because they
do not count everywhere, and because many people take great care not to be visible, including
families who are afraid of being separated.
Many believe that the economy is improving and the situation is getting better, but that’s not what we see at Mary’s Place.
Parents are working two jobs and it’s still not enough to make ends meet. Jobs and housing are still difficult to find for our most
vulnerable – immigrants, refugees, those with language barriers or an eviction in their past.
Last year, with the help of the City of Seattle, we opened Bianca’s Place in South Lake Union for 30 families including, for the first
time, single dads with children. Over the last two months we opened Lula’s Place and the Jackson Street Shelter, both temporary
winter night shelters that will shelter 60 family members. Across all six of our facilities we are currently providing shelter at night
for 220 people. But we need to do more. There are still too many families, parents with children, sleeping in places that are unfit
for human habitation. We need to bring them inside to safety and community.
We have ambitious plans for 2015! We will open a second day center location for single women without children, add additional
job training opportunities through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, refine our model of short-term,
emergency family stabilization services, and we will continue to empower women, children and families to reclaim their lives by
providing hope and love.
Thank you for all that you do to make our women and families feel safe, warm, and loved. Your donations of your time, clothing,
and financial gifts let our families know that someone cares. They do know, and we all are so grateful.
Looking forward to continuing to partner with you in 2015!
Marty
Mary’s Place had another incredible year of growth in 2014
THANKS TO THE GENEROSITY OF OUR DONORS AND
VOLUNTEERS, we were able to open a fourth
emergency night shelter in South Lake Union,
Bianca’s Place, and nearly double the number
of overnight stays we provided to women,
children and families. We hired Lauren Santos
as our Kitchen Manager and, together with
organizations like Northwest Harvest, Food
Lifeline, and a team of volunteers, served just
under 150,000 meals, a 65% increase over
last year. Lots of clean laundry, warm showers,
and bandaids! The need continues to grow,
and, with your help, we’ll continue to meet it.
Division, U.S. Bank, Seattle Children’s Research Institute,
Redfin Seattle, Russell Investments, PEMCO Insurance,
Chasing Fireflies, Amazon, and Bank of America brought in
teams to help moms, dads, and grandmas shop for presents
for their kids, and wrapped gifts as well!
Santa visited Mary’s Place on December 22nd and we had
games, music, pictures, food and gifts all afternoon; and on
Christmas Day volunteers arrived at our four night shelters
with holiday dinner and festive activities for the families.
