From Upper Street there will be two arcades leading to the public boulevard, one of which will run through the central arches in the Grade II listed post office building on Upper Street and the second arcade, next to the former Mitre Public House. 1516 Henry VIII establishes a “Master of Posts”. 1710 The “Master of Posts” is renamed “Post Master General”. 1839 Postage rates are revised – delivery within Great Britain and Ireland is given a fixed rate in the form of a stamp. Late 19th Century The Post Master General orders a number of sorting and delivery centres to be built throughout London and the South East; mail deliveries reach between 6 and 12 per day in London. 1906 the North London Mail Centre opens, fronting Upper Street. 2003 Royal Mail announces its plans to move its sorting office to Eagle Wharf Road. 2015 A new chapter begins with the North London Mail Centre set to be transformed into Islington Square, with new homes, shops, restaurants and leisure facilities.
