The Festival of Culture is a spectacular event hosted
by Islington Square, in collaboration with the many
cultural institutions of the Islington area. And, with
the exception of food and drinks, everything is free!
From a pop-up cinema to comedy, live music to
children’s entertainment, exhibitions to gardening
workshops – there really is something for everyone.
The Festival marketplace, complete with street food
stalls and pop-up bars is the perfect place to soak
up the atmosphere; and the magical light display in
the central boulevard provides a dynamic centrepiece
to this one-off event, celebrating the area’s past,
present and future.
Experience the culture. Remember the history.
Imagine the future.

Islington Square is a new development that will
transform the former North London Mail centre just
off Upper Street into a new destination, combining
restored Edwardian buildings with new-build
elements.
The scheme, developed by Sager Group in association
with Cain Hoy, will provide 263 homes (a mixture
of both private and affordable), exciting new
retail outlets, restaurants, and leisure facilities –
all stemming from a new public boulevard.
From Upper Street there will be two arcades leading
to the public boulevard, one of which will run
through the central arches in the Grade II listed
post office building on Upper Street and the second
arcade, next to the former Mitre Public House.
1516
Henry VIII establishes a “Master
of Posts”.
1710
The “Master of Posts” is
renamed “Post Master General”.
1839
Postage rates are revised –
delivery within Great Britain and
Ireland is given a fixed rate in the
form of a stamp.
Late 19th Century
The Post Master General orders
a number of sorting and delivery
centres to be built throughout
London and the South East; mail
deliveries reach between 6 and
12 per day in London.
1906
the North London Mail Centre
opens, fronting Upper Street.
2003
Royal Mail announces its plans
to move its sorting office to Eagle
Wharf Road.
2015
A new chapter begins with the
North London Mail Centre set to be
transformed into Islington Square,
with new homes, shops, restaurants
and leisure facilities.
