City of Angels
Los Angeles From Auckland
There are few cities in the world that offer as
much entertainment, excitement and diversity
as Los Angeles. Known by many names
– Tinseltown, La-la Land, the City of Angels
– LA is a thriving, multi-layered city filled with
world-class everything: museums, music, food,
architecture, gardens.
Hire a hot rod and drive along the breathtaking
Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu, kick off your
jandals and dig your toes into the golden sand
of Zuma Beach. While you’re there, find out
what $1 billion can buy in the way of artwork
at the magnificent Getty Centre. The view
across the city on a clear day alone must be
worth at least that.
Explore LA’s wild side by taking a trek through
the Santa Monica mountains, then dress up
and spend a day in Pasadena (the ultimate
culture vulture destination) or pop down to
Hollywood Boulevard or the Sunset Strip for a
three-olive martini.
Whatever you’re looking for, LA can show you
something that will turn your idea of the
American Dream into a reality.

Aloha sun, aloha surf, aloha heaven
Honolulu via Sydney
Tropical Honolulu is a traveller’s
dream – that rare place that has managed
to gracefully incorporate its beautiful traditions,
fascinating history, and unmatched landscape
into its sophisticated city lifestyle. It might be
part of America, but Honolulu is more laid back
than any mainland capital. Add sandy beaches,
waving palms and the balmy weather of
Waikiki and you’ve got a great mix of sun,
fun and culture.
Take advantage of the amazing food on offer:
visit Ono Hawaiian Foods, a 38-year-old diner
and shrine to genuine Hawaiian cuisine. It’s
a favourite with locals, and a great place to
get the lowdown on Honolulu’s history and
traditions, including traditional cooking and
ingredients. Walk off your dinner with a wander
around Foster Botanical Garden and admire the
beautiful and rare tropical plants.
And don’t forget to visit La Mariana Sailing Club.
This glorious hideaway on a lagoon is the last
genuine Tiki bar in Honolulu. How can you go
wrong in a city where the mayor throws a beach
party every weekend?
Prepare to leave your heart
San Francisco via Sydney
San Francisco is a city that warmly invites you to
sample its many charms. Marvel at its mixture of
Victorian and modern architecture, scale its
steep streets, explore its diverse culture and
indulge in its world-class restaurants. It’s a
compact, energetic city that’s rich, diverse and
irresistibly beautiful.
You can walk the famous Golden Gate Bridge,
roller-blade, bike, or take in the scenery from the
comfort of your car. Drive up to Twin Peaks for
an amazing 360-degree view of San Francisco
from the highest hilltop. Or if cruising is more
your thing, take a guided boat ride for beautiful
views of the bay, Marin County, or even Alcatraz.
If it’s sport you’re looking for, check out a Giants
baseball game at Pac Bell Park.
If driving a big car with huge tailfins through towering redwoods along the Big Sur Coast Road sounds like your idea
of a good time – the North American West Coast could be for you. One of the world’s most amazing drives takes you
through wild coastlines, serene forests, and past the world famous Pebble Beach Golf Club and holiday getaways of
the rich and famous. Hang onto that car and drive up to Vancouver – a mere 1,300km north of San Fran. From there,
connect with your inner Johnny Cash and head to the Calgary Stampede (July 2008) billed as being the Greatest
Outdoor Show on Earth.
All sound a bit energetic? Hawaii still boasts some of the Pacific’s best beaches and there is truly something for
everyone on its many islands. How could anywhere that invented surfing, the hula, and the Hawaiian shirt be
anything but a laid-back paradise? So don’t just dream it – get out there and do it!
A natural beauty
Vancouver Via Sydney
Vancouver is the largest city in the province of
British Columbia and the third largest in Canada.
Vancouver is as easy on the feet as it is on the
eyes and palate. Walking the grid system of
streets takes you easily from urban centre to
public park, to the beach, local attractions and
back again. Each of the city’s neighbourhoods
has its own distinct flair and can be explored
in-depth on foot. Vancouver takes pride in
public spaces such as Stanley Park, whose
seawall and suspension bridge should not be
missed. Botanical gardens are many, and each
is sumptuously adorned with flowers, trees,
shrubs and grasses.
With the mountains, rivers and the ocean so
close, you’ll never run out of places to explore.
Beachcombers delight in the groomed sands
of English Bay and Kit’s. The more adventurous
can scuba dive or sail in the harbour. Paddle
your own canoe (or kayak) in the rivers; ski,
hike or bike the mountain trails. The winter
sports scene is so great in fact, that the city
will play host to the 2010 Olympic Games.
