when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another

In a paragraph, a topic sentence not only states the subject, but the
controlling idea (that is, the main idea). For instance, you might want to write

horses. So your topic sentence is more than about horses. It also contains the

Controlling Idea: The controlling (main) idea is what the paragraph is
about. The controlling idea is always stated in the topic sentence.
Concluding Sentence: A concluding sentence usually serves as a
summary, bringing closure to the paragraph. It can also be a closing

The topic sentence states the topic of a paragraph. The topic sentence is the

must be closely related to the topic.
Clouds possess a surprising amount of power. Clouds can block the
sun itself or can refract its light in bursts of color at sunset. As fog, they
can blanket the surface of the earth. Mightily, they can draw water from

houses of lightning and of ear-splitting cracks of thunder. Tornadoes,
typhoons, and hurricanes wear the terrible armor of clouds. It is easy to
forget, on a typical, sunny day, the strength of these airy, hazy mists.
The topic sentence states the topic of the paragraph: the power of clouds.
The topic is clouds and the controlling idea is their surprising power. Each middle
sentence gives a proof or reason that clouds are powerful. The concluding sentence
