* Very late June, early-mid August, and all of July cover the peak of
the tourist season for the area. Business is open later in these months
and requires more employees to work the peak hours of these days.
The business is not open for most of May and September but there are
employees working to open and close the business for the year at
these times. June can be unpredictable with rain (business cannot
operate in the rain) and also is a slower month in regards to the
amount of customers who visit.
* Since the summer season can be unpredictable due to weather,
customer attendance, and many other external factors, employees
must be flexible. It is always possible for employees to receive their
40 hours per week but scheduling shifts can change rapidly and
employees need to be able to accommodate.
HOUSING: Housing is dormitory style. Each room comes furnished with bedding and a sitting
chair. There are two bunk beds per room that will sleep four people to one room. All four
individuals will share a bathroom. There is a microwave and fridge for food preparation. Cost is
$70/week. There will be a $250.00 dollar deposit for the room that will be deducted from the
employee’s first check. This will be held for possible damaged and/or extremely soiled rooms.
Also if a student leaves before his/her lease is up the student will not get the deposit back. It
is 15 minutes’ walk to work.
Keystone is a town located in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, at the base of Mt
Rushmore. In the winter time, the population is around 300 and in the middle of July and
August, there could be 35,000 people going through the little town of Keystone. Everything is
within walking distance. There are many restaurants and attractions. It is a safe environment,
and a friendly, beautiful place. However, to do bulk shopping (food, clothes banking, etc.)
participants will need to travel to Rapid City (20 miles away).
Major attractions are not far from the town of Keystone. Mt Rushmore is 2 miles from the
middle of Keystone, where participants can walk or ride a bike. Here, there are historic and
Presidential museums where participants can
learn about the history of Mount Rushmore. There
is also an alpine slide and tramway with great
views of Mount Rushmore and the surrounding
area. Other tours include a historic 1880 train
ride that takes visitors through the beautiful Black
Hills scenery, an actual gold mine that can be
toured and where visitors can learn to pan for
gold and a historic walking tour. The area is also
home to beautiful caves that boast some of the
largest formations around. In Keystone, there are
two small convenient stores within walking
distance, but for major shopping, Wal-Mart and
major stores in Rapid City are recommended.
