Message from Board President & Executive Director
We are the Meals on Wheels People. Since 1970 our staff and volunteers have
served and delivered millions of meals to seniors in the greater metropolitan
area. We have evolved from a program with its roots in church basements to an
organization that now has 35 dynamic meal sites and almost 10,000 volunteers
spanning three counties.
Our name has evolved as well. We’re pleased to introduce our new logo with
the emphasis on our most recognized product — Meals on Wheels. Our market
research indicates that people more quickly recognize Meals on Wheels and
can instantly identify what we do and who we serve. As the senior population
continues to expand, the organization has the infrastructure in place to meet the
growing need and now has a contemporary new look as well.
This year we touched the lives of nearly 17,000 seniors. Our hot, nutritious meals
and visits from friendly volunteers are often what allow frail, homebound seniors
to remain independent and living in their own homes. And for those seniors
who are often alone and isolated, companionship over a tasty meal at one of our
neighborhood dining centers can mean the difference between living and just
being alive. More than 20 percent of the seniors we serve are ethnic minorities and
our programming and menus reflect that diversity.
Our goal is lofty and simple at the same time: to provide nutritious meals to every
senior who requests one. Thanks to the unwavering support of our donors, we
have maintained that tradition that began with our founders more than 42 years
ago. Feeding seniors in our community is a collaborative effort. We rely on and
continue to forge partnerships with city and county governments, businesses and
service organizations to accomplish our vision that no senior will go hungry or
experience social isolation.
Hunger among the seniors in our neighborhood is a growing concern. Recent
studies have shown that food insecurity has become a real issue with younger
seniors — those between the age of 60 and 69 — and we are working diligently
to provide access to hot meals throughout our service area. Your support, both
financial and through volunteer service, is vital as we continue to fight hunger one
senior at a time.

Seniors Struggle with Poverty
In 2009, 6.8 percent of the seniors dining in one of
our neighborhood centers reported income below
the poverty level. In 2012, that number had jumped
to 18.8 percent. More than 26 percent of Meals on
Wheels clients live below poverty level.
Meet Frank, who dines regularly at one of our
Multnomah County centers. He’s 62 and a Vietnam
veteran. He suffers from PTSD and poor health and
his income is so limited he often goes without food.
That’s why he has lunch with the Meals on Wheels
People every weekday and counts on donated food
items for additional nutrition.
Frank is not alone. More than 15,000 more meals than last year were served in
our dining centers this year to seniors who struggle to meet basic nutritional
intake. Because of your generous gifts this year, the Meals on Wheels People
was able to provide a hot meal to every senior who requested one.

Each week, dozens of New Seasons Market’s employees help deliver Meals on
Wheels throughout the greater metropolitan area. You’ll find a dedicated team
of volunteer drivers at every one of their 12 locations and their main office. But
that’s not all they do. Since the local grocer was founded in 2000, it has
donated 50 cents from the sale of every loaf of their organic sourdough
bread to the Meals on Wheels People. That adds up to nearly $1 million. New
Seasons Market also spearheads our annual Donate Dinner campaign each
November, encouraging shoppers to donate the cost of a meal to a homebound
