Mrs. Lechelt’s March Newsletter 100 days of Kindergarten and Penguins From the desk of Mrs. Lechelt: We have been working intensely on letter recognition and the sounds they make, this term. On March 1st, I’ll be handing out alphabet awards to those students who can recognize all the letters in the alphabet. Some students are very close to this huge achievement. Keep on practicing!! We’ve completed 100 days of school, this month and will have some 100 themed activities to celebrate. We’ll also be learning all about penguins! Upcoming Events March 2 – No School for ECS (Early Dismissal) March 4 – No School (Professional Development day for staff) All of the students are becoming more comfortable with print and are trying to write, sound out words and read! The more you can do to encourage writing at home, the faster your child will progress. Even a quick 10 minutes to make a card for grandma and sounding out the words, would be excellent practice. You can encourage the use of the alphabet characters and actions that we learn in class. (They are the characters and actions I send to you in my weekly update!) March 7 – 100th day of school March will be an exciting month, as we begin our new unit on penguins! We will be learning where penguins live, what they eat, types of penguins and other fun facts. We will also be having a classroom visit from a real penguin from West Edmonton Mall!! “Habit 3 – Put First Things First” will be introduced this month. This habit reinforces the need to complete most important jobs or tasks first. A story and activity will be coming home for your child and you to complete together. Your child will be sorting activities into “work first - then play” columns. This habit can be reinforced at home by having your child complete home reading or homework calendar activities first, before play time. Starting these habits at a young age will help your child develop into a responsible and independent student. Thanks for your continued support! March 8 – Scholastic Book Orders due March 18 – Penguin Visit (in-class field trip – West Edmonton Mall Penguin visit - weather permitting) March 23 – Progress Reports home / Silver Carnival March 24 – No School (day-in-lieu for interviews) March 25-April 4 – Spring Break & Easter Holidays School Resumes Tuesday, April 5th Leader in Me Mrs. Lechelt’s Classroom Newsletter Page 2 100 days of Kindergarten On Monday, March 7th, we will be celebrating our 100th Day of Kindergarten. I will have fun activities planned to help celebrate! I will be sending home a small labelled Ziploc bag and would like to have students bring in a collection of a 100 items. (lego pieces, cheerios, beads etc.) Please help your child count to 100, to fill the bag. Items will be returned the same day. We will present each bag to the class, so that students can gain an understanding of what 100 looks like. Thank-you! Thank-you, parents, for the nutritious snacks, reading with your child every day, playing the numeracy board games at home, and for working on the “Leader In Me” bag. Any extra practice you do with your child at home that reinforces concepts taught at school will greatly assist with helping your child to prepare for grade one! ECS progress reports will be sent home with your child on Wednesday, March 23rd. Student led conferences were in February, but if you have any more questions or would like to arrange another time to meet, please feel free to contact me. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the school at (780) 998-1441, send a note or e-mail me at [email protected] Thanks! Rynae Lechelt Kindergarten Information Night Our school is having an information night for parents who wish to register their Kindergarten aged children for Kindergarten in September 2016. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27th in the school gym. If you have friends or neighbours that have children from our boundary area entering Kindergarten for the next school year, please pass on this information! This meeting is only for parents of children in Kindergarten, next year! Grade One Preparations As we are approaching the last term of Kindergarten, we are beginning to prepare the children for grade one. We are encouraging your child to show responsibility and independence. This group of Kindergarten students is becoming very independent with getting ready for class and dismissal! Way to go parents, for continuing to reinforce this at home! Penguin Visit On Friday, March 18th, a penguin from West Edmonton Mall will be coming to the school for an in-school field trip, weather pending. If it is bad weather, they will not drive the penguin to our school and we will have to reschedule. The presentation will take place during regular class times. No parent volunteers are required on this day. Your child can wear black and white on this day in honour of our special guest!
