The quality of their wines has increased dramatically over the years, so much so, that even the French are taking notice! Moldova is a very small landlocked country at just 33,000 square kms (about half the size of Tasmania) with a population of around 10 million. The region has a colourful history with Byzantine, Slavs, Magyars and the Turks all ruling over time. Independence was claimed in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The land is generally very fertile with its favourable climate and rich soils perfect for growing fruit and vegetables. Subsequently agriculture forms the majority the economy/industry. In fact, it too is becoming well known for quality wines. The landscape, towns and villages are well worth seeing. Chances are, you’ll be the only one of your friends who has ever visited!
