Hongi - traditional Māori welcome. When you’re
being greeted in a traditional Māori setting,
you may find your host’s face looming closer
and closer to yours. Don’t panic, you’re simply
receiving a hongi. Press your nose gently to your
host’s nose and pause. Relax, clear your mind
and enjoy the sincerity of your welcome.

PGA-sanctioned event
The New Zealand Open is an iconic New Zealand golf event held annually in March
in Queenstown at the Hills Golf Course and Millbrook Resort.
A cornerstone event on the PGA Tour of Australasia, the New Zealand Open includes
a unique Pro-Am structure where a field of at least 140 amateur and 140 professional
players compete alongside one another. Professional golfers compete for the
New Zealand Open title. At the same time, a pairing of one amateur and one
professional play a best-ball format for the New Zealand Pro-Am Championship.
“The New Zealand Open Championship is now rated by the players as one of
professional golf’s favourite events. We have developed a unique world-class event,
that continues to grow; stated simply, this progression could never have occurred
without the help and financial support from the New Zealand Government, and in
particular, the Major Events Development Fund. The New Zealand Major Events team
have been incredibly supportive throughout, and we are extremely grateful for all

An important Winter Olympics qualifier event

Committed volunteer workforce
Winter Games New Zealand attracts the world’s elite winter sports athletes including
multiple Olympic medallists, Paralympic medallists and world champions in free skiing,
snowboarding, alpine skiing and curling. It has also positioned New Zealand at the forefront
of competitive winter sports development; with the Winter Games playing an instrumental
part in the decision to include free skiing in the most recent Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014.
This biennial, home grown event provides excellent opportunities to promote New Zealand
as a competitive and recreational ski destination and delivers economic benefit to New Zealand
by attracting elite athletes and visitors from around the world. Every second event takes place
six months prior to the Winter Olympics. The 2015 event included 4 FIS World Cups, 2 IPC
Continental Cups, 3 FIS Continental Cups, AFP Platinum Free Ski Big Air, World Snowboard
Tour National Level Big Air, and an international mixed pairs curling tournament. It received
extensive media coverage, and was supported by approximately 1,500 volunteer positions
over a 14 day period, many of which were international.
“The Winter Games New Zealand is a very bold initiative with the long term goal of being
a significant event in the world of snow sports. Without the support of the Government
through New Zealand Major Events this event would never have passed go. The on-going
support from Major Events for the first four Games has enabled us to progress towards
becoming financially sustainable and so to promote New Zealand as a winter destination.”

Launched The Enduro World Series’ 2015 season
The Crankworx Mountain Biking Festival celebrates mountain biking and has been
running for 12 years in Whistler, Canada. An event in Les 2 Alpes, France, has run
for four years. In 2015, the Festival debuted its first Southern Hemisphere event
with the inclusion of a five day festival in Rotorua, New Zealand.
With the addition of the Crankworx Rotorua event, the Crankworx World Tour concept
was also launched. This event sees several disciplines within the Tour holding
Crankworx Series titles and an overarching competition with the winner crowned as
King or Queen of the Crankworx World Tour. The launch of the Crankworx World Tour
concept created one of the strongest participant fields seen at a Crankworx Festival.
The event showcased Rotorua as a world-class mountain biking destination.
In fact, in 2013, Red Bull ranked Rotorua’s Whakarewarewa forest in the top eight
mountain biking destinations in the world – the only Southern Hemisphere location
to feature. In August 2015, the International Mountain Biking Association awarded
Rotorua with its most prestigious gold-level ride centre status. This positions
Rotorua as one of six preeminent Ride Centres in the world.
“Crankworx Rotorua didn’t just exceed expectations, it blew expectations away.
Everything about it was incredible…. The hospitality shown by the people here
in Rotorua, not only to our team, but the athletes, the media, it’s been world
class, second to none. It’s truly been incredible.”

“Having New Zealand Major Events associated with Crankworx Rotorua has given
us the opportunity to leverage from significant expertise, networks and resources
that we simply would not have otherwise had access to. There is no doubt in my

in delivering the level of event that we knew Crankworx Rotorua 2015 could be.”

over 40 cellar doors within close proximity, take a wine tour and taste the cuisine.
WEST COAST: The wild West Coast is home to rivers, rainforests, glaciers and geological
treasures. ‘The Coast’ (as locals call it) is best explored by car, take the Great Coast Road
which stretches from Westport to Greymouth and was recently voted one of top
10 drives in the world by Lonely Planet.
CHRISTCHURCH & CANTERBURY: Canterbury stretches from the ocean to the alps,
and is home to Christchurch, New Zealand’s ‘transitional city’. Following the 2010-11
earthquakes, Christchurch has re-emerged as a vibrant and ever-changing city.
With the unprecedented opportunity to rethink, revitalise and renew, a bold new
Christchurch is emerging. A gateway to the South Island, Christchurch is surrounded
by a region of natural wonders, a great base to ski, golf, bungy jump, whitewater raft,
bike, surf, whale watch and explore.
QUEENSTOWN: Queenstown is one of New Zealand’s top
visitor destinations, sitting on a crystal clear lake below
the dramatic alpine range. Home of the ultimate adventure
bucket-list, world-class wine, and luxury hospitality,
Queenstown shines all year round. With close proximity
to international-quality ski fields and the spectacular
Central Otago, you may not ever want to leave.
DUNEDIN: Known as the Edinburgh of the south,
Dunedin offers unique landscapes, rare wildlife
Nelson &
Marlborough
and a city vibe entrenched with Scottish
heritage and pride.
