FRANK DELUCA YMCA FAMILY CENTER
Summer Program Guide 2015
MAY 1—AUGUST 31
DEAR MARION COUNTY:
Anyone who knows me will tell you where I’m at if I’m
not at home, with my family or at work—I’m at the Y.
The YMCA was
recommended to me
after I moved to
Ocala 12 years ago.
At that time, I was
married, and my
youngest, who is
special needs, was 3
years old. My life was
very stressful. Not
only was I a mommy
to a child with Prader
Willi Syndrome, but I
had a husband who
struggled with bipolar
and manic depression.
Being the caregiver to
a child with special
needs and an adult
with mental illness
had its own full-time commitment. I had a moderate
commitment to fitness, however Cyle enjoyed his social
time at the Y, so I struggled through workouts with the
last fragments of energy I could muster up.
standing ovation! You will find me crying on the sideline
when that happens.
Our life changed drastically over 2 years ago when my
husband lost his battle with mental illness. We were left
without provision or a plan, yet I still had to keep my
son and I going. I am blessed to have an amazing
support system that quickly became my right and left
arms. But I was the only one who could use my feet!
This is where the Frank DeLuca YMCA Family Center
became part of my lifeline. Becoming stronger and
healthier was a necessity. I talked to the pros to push
my limits, and I took their advice.
Today, I can proudly say I am 57 years old and in the
best shape of my life. I am rebuilding our lives with new
determination. My son has gone beyond what his
doctors ever expected.
I have to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the people
who are responsible for maintaining the vision of the
YMCA. Because of your commitment, you have impacted
my family’s life by helping me put the pieces back
together.
Because of you, this is more than the Y to me.
- Denise and Cyle Sarko
As the years progressed, Cyle’s disorder presented
other health issues, some which are life-threatening,
and finding him an activity that was safe was always a
challenge. I had always been proactive with his therapy
and dietary needs, so as he grew, I searched for a sport
that he could play while fitting in with the rest of the
kids.
YMCA basketball was my answer! Little did I know that
we would find the most caring and nurturing coaches,
parents and staff to teach my star how to play. Not
only has he learned the sport, his can-do spirit says he
is the next Michael Jordan! Every time he scores—or
even just catches the ball—both teams give him a

BUILDING A STRONGER YMCA
IT’S RESPONSIBILITY
OUR VISION FOR THE FUTURE
Making our community stronger is what the Y is all about. That’s why
we are in the middle of a construction project that will help us to
continue to impact our community in meaningful ways.
As construction begins its final phases, we are working closely with
Chap Dinkins, of Dinkins Construction, who is the superintendent on
the job, to ensure that we minimize inconveniences during this
process. To ensure that our facility is fully operational, the project has
been completed in the following phases:
Prayer Room
 Private, quiet space for you to pray
COMPLETED—PHASE 3:
Adult Locker Rooms
 Larger space for all of your needs
 More lockers, stalls and showers
 Private showers with changing areas
 Improved vanity space in the Women’s
Locker Room
 New Sauna to help you relax and
recharge before or after your
workouts
PHASE 4: Café, Social Area, Child
Development, Five Private Family
Locker Rooms
COMPLETED—PHASE 1:
Racquetball Courts
 Two additional racquetball courts for more availability and usage
 Social Area for seating and viewing league games
With this new space, we will be able to
continue to provide programs that help
people of all ages reach their full
potential. Our partnership with Munroe
Regional Medical Center will focus on
cutting-edge services so that we can take a preventative approach to
health and wellness, ultimately reducing the risk for chronic disease.
Wellness Floor Addition
 Additional square footage
 Nearly triple the size of the old Wellness Floor
Main Group Exercise Studio
 Nearly twice the size as our old Group Exercise Studio
 New classes, such as BODYPUMP® and Insanity®
 Light, welcoming atmosphere
In addition, our healthy café will offer options that are both nutritious
and tasty, but we’re not stopping at food service. Our head chef will
host healthy cooking seminars so that we can truly begin to
understand the principles of healthy eating.
COMPLETED—PHASE 2:
Wellness Floor Renovation
 New, state-of-the-art Technogym equipment
 Track your workouts and monitor your results with Technogym
MyWellness Cloud
 COMING SOON: Receive additional coaching and advice from our
fitness professionals through your MyWellness App

Wall Ball Targets, and more.
Meeting Room
 Space to provide educational
seminars about nutrition and
healthy living
 Space to provide Marriage,
Parenting and Financial classes
Throughout the construction process, we will send e-mail updates
about the progress of the project and any changes that may affect
day-to-day operations. Our mobile app and Facebook page will also
be updated regularly so that we can keep you connected with any
important information.
We appreciate your patience as we begin to use our new space and
finish this transition. This truly is an exciting time for our YMCA as
we build a stronger future for our community through healthy living,
youth development and social responsibility.

After joining the YMCA that
day, a wellness appointment
was scheduled and Jesi was
enrolled into the Y’s Coach
Approach program, which is
designed to teach new and
returning exercisers how to
start and stick with their fitness
programs.
Jesi graduated into personal
training, and in less than a year,
she has lost 70 pounds and
30.5 inches. Furthermore, Jesi
completed her first 5K after
having never been a runner
before.
“The YMCA has made health and
fitness one of the most
important things in my life.
More importantly, breathing
isn’t challenging anymore and
my blood pressure is back to
normal,” Jesi says. “Except
during some of my workouts
with my trainer!”
LIVESTRONG AT THE YMCA
At the Y, we know that exercise—even in moderation—is key to
combating chronic diseases. That’s why our LiveSTRONG program
is designed to help adult cancer survivors rebuild their strength.
Through a 12-week small group program, participants meet twice
a week so that they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle
that will help them live strong.

BUILDING STRONG FOUNDATIONS
ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP CAMPAIGN
At the Y, strengthening the community is our cause. That’s why
we work day in and day out to nurture youth, strengthen
families and promote healthy living. This is more important than
ever, as our community is facing some serious issues, and we
believe that we are the organization that can move our
community forward with “Y solutions” to the most pressing
community issues.
FOR HEALTHY LIVING

According to the 2014 County Health Rankings, 32 percent
of Marion County adults have a BMI that is greater than 30,
putting them at risk for life-altering chronic diseases.

In addition, only 61 percent of adults in our
community have access to exercise programs.

50 percent of all chronic diseases are
preventable through exercise and nutrition.

But good health is more than just eating right and
working out—21 percent of Ocala adults have
inadequate social support, making it harder to address
simple lifestyle concerns.
FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

In 2014, 33 percent of children under the age of 18 live
below the poverty line.

In addition, 40 percent of children live in a
single-parent household, with only one adult as the
child’s caregiver and role model.


Only 70 percent of a 9th grade cohort will
graduate after four years, according to 2014
statistics.
According to the Home Security Shield, Ocala is now in the
top 20 most dangerous cities in the state of Florida.
FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Last year, your generous donations help provide programs that
promoted healthy spirit, mind and body to over 4,000 individuals
experiencing financial hardship in Marion County—1,955 families; 326
adults; 684 teens; and 859 seniors.
Y SOLUTION
At the Y, we know the importance of
getting—and staying—active. That’s
why our programs are designed to
help people start their journey to a
healthy lifestyle.
We specialize in creating the perfect
setting to welcome all individuals.
That’s why we engage people in group
settings so that everyone has the
support they need to be successful.
From YMCA Get Fit Programs and
Group Exercise Classes to our
preventative programs, like the
YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program
and the LiveSTRONG Program for
cancer survivors, we work diligently
every day to improve our community’s
health.
YMCA Scholarships allow for people of
all ages, backgrounds and incomes to
participate in these programs so that,
as a community, we can build strong
foundations, and continue growing
stronger together.
Y SOLUTION
Developing our future leaders is
something that we take seriously at
the Y. That’s why our youth programs
focus on education, core values and
fitness.
During our first week of Summer Camp
in 2014, we had 200 campers, and 50
percent of them were on scholarship.
Not only is the YMCA a safe haven for
kids of all ages, but we make it a
priority to surround our youth with
positive role models while we help
enhance their education.
Without YMCA Scholarships, our youth
would not be able to participate in
programs, like Summer Camp, Youth
Sports, Swim Team, and more.
Our goal is to help ensure brighter
futures for youth, as we work together
to build strong foundations for the
rest of their lives.
STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITY
YMCA SCHOLARSHIP DONORS
PARTNERING WITH OUR COMMUNITY FOR A BRIGTHER FUTURE
We believe that everyone deserves the Y. That’s why we offer financial assistance to individuals and families who might not otherwise be able to afford Y memberships or programs. With the help of our donors, volunteers, members and staff, we are able to
work together to raise funds so that we can ensure that no one is turned away due to an inability to pay. We are fortunate to
have more than 300 donors who have generously supported our cause, and we are thankful for them all!
Special thanks to everyone who has supported our campaign at any level—without your help, we would not be able to bring our
cause to life. At this point in our 2015 Campaign, we would also like to recognize our business partners and donors who have
supported Scholarship with a donation of $1,000 or more.

MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE, AND SO MUCH MORE
We had a remarkable impact on our community in 2014, but while we
raised $367,000, we awarded more than $423,000 worth of
scholarships. That’s why our 2015 Scholarship Campaign goal is to
raise $500,000 — so that we can continue to open our doors to
our neighbors in need. We know that at the Y, we help kids, adults,
families and seniors thrive to their fullest potential. Making dreams

Well-being for many of our neighbors is all too frequently limited by
income or social isolation, but the Y offers opportunities for every
