Taxi marshalls
are helping
to keep
you safer
Getting into Ipswich over
the Christmas and New
Year period could cost you
as little as £1.
Revellers enjoying a Friday or
Saturday night out in Ipswich
are benefiting from a taxi
marshal service from 11pm to
4am at Dog’s Head Street near
Revolution.
The Quids In campaign,which
incorporates buses as well as car
parking, has been extended
until the end of January.
The main objective of the
scheme is to help cut trouble
once pubs and clubs have
closed. It has been funded by
Suffolk’s Police Crime
Commisioner, Ipswich Borough
Council and Ipswich Central
and will last until at least next
October.
So, Borough Council car parks,
Ipswich Buses inward town
journeys and the County
Council’s Cromwell Square car
park will continue to offer the
same great deal Mondays to
Fridays after 3pm.
Since the campaign began in
September, an extra 25,000
people have parked in Borough
Council-owned car parks
compared to the same period in
2012. This is an increase of 17%.
And traders have welcomed the
Quids In scheme, too.

Without marshals, fewer taxi
drivers are prepared to work late
on Fridays and Saturdays
because of the threat of
anti-social behaviour. Marshals
help to keep queues orderly,
minimise associated violence,
ensure passengers are in a fit
state to travel and have the
means to pay the fare. They also
maintain contact with the
Police, CCTV and the Town
Pastors.
Ipswich Borough Council's
Deputy Leader, Councillor Neil
MacDonald, said: "This is
another important step in
making sure that people
enjoying a night out in Ipswich
do feel safer. The taxi marshals
scheme complements our other
Safer Ipswich initiatives such as
Purple Flag, Reducing the
Strength and Best Bar None. The
Borough Council also operates a

Commemorating the
First World War
Ipswich Borough Council is
working with a wide range
of other organisations to
plan a series of events to
commemorate the
centenary of key milestones
in the First World War.
These will commence with a
special service and candle-lit
vigil in August next year - 100
years since the world was
plunged into a terrible conflict.
In 2014, guests from Arras will
travel to Ipswich for the
Remembrance service, and then
the Mayor will go to France for a
special service in the northern
French town that suffered
terrible damage in the war.
Guests from Germany and
Belgium will also attend.
Key events over the next five
years are detailed below and
more information will follow as
the plans are developed. It is
planned to concentrate on
events that affected Ipswich
during the war years, which will
complement the national events
being planned by the
Government and the Royal
British Legion.
2014
This marks the 100 years since
Britain declared war on
Germany. Nationally, there will
be a wreath-laying service in
Glasgow and a candle-lit vigil of
prayer at Westminster Abbey.
Ipswich is looking at linking into
the national events, with a civic
procession and candle-lit vigil of
prayer at the Cenotaph in
Christchurch Park. The Mayor
will be attending the
Remembrance Service at
Ipswich and also travelling to
Arras, France for a special
Remembrance Service.
2015
Ipswich will be hosting an
Anzac Day parade and service in
Suffolk to remember the
Gallipoli campaign, following a
request by the Britain Australia
Society. The Council and its
partners will be working with
schools to commemorate the
Zeppelin raids on Ipswich. The
town will also mark the heroism
of Ipswich-born Victoria Cross
winner Arthur Saunders.
2016
This was the year of the Battle of
the Somme, the great naval
Battle of Jutland and the death
of Field Marshall Earl Kitchener.
The War Minister, who was High
Steward of Ipswich, drowned en
route to Russia. It is hoped to
draw on Ipswich’s maritime
heritage and festival to mark the
Jutland exchange.
2017
The battles of Arras and Vimy
Ridge and the slaughter at
Passchendaele took place.
Ipswich will join up with its
friends in Arras to mark the
centenary of the large-scale
destruction of Arras and plans to
hold an exhibition in the Town
Hall here in Ipswich.
2018
The RFC became the Royal Air
Force and the Armistice was
signed. The Remembrance
Services in November will be of
extra special significance. The
Borough Council is also
considering a Freedom of the
Borough ceremony in either
2018 or 2019 to mark the signing
of the Versailles peace treaty.

Ipswich remembers
Local schoolchildren joined veterans, the Mayor, Hamil Clarke, and
the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Mary Blake, at the Fields of Honour in
the Old Cemetery for a service of remembrance on Armistice Day.
In a moving ceremony, each child laid a poppy cross at the graves of
those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country (see picture).
On the previous day, more than a thousand people attended the
Remembrance Sunday service in Christchurch Park. Members of the
Royal British Legion, veterans, cadets and civic leaders all paid their
respects at the cenotaph. The Mayor said: "Again, we have had the
opportunity to pay our respects to those who made the ultimate
sacrifice and we will never forget their courage and service to their
country. Both the Remembrance Sunday service in the park and the
poppy-laying ceremony and service in the Fields of Honour were
very moving occasions."
Masterpieces of Western art
Everything you need is just a click away
www.ipswich.gov.uk
Following the success of his sell-out lecture on Constable at
Christchurch Mansion, world famous curator John Sheeran is
giving a series of 10 art talks about the great masterpieces of
Western art at the Ipswich Film Theatre during 2014. Each talk,
from 10.30am to noon, explores the great masterpieces of a
particular historical period, starting with the Italian
Renaissance and taking the story of art right up to the 20th
Century. So, if you have ever wanted to understand, appreciate
and enjoy art more or to discover why artists like Leonardo Da
Vinci, Van Gogh or Picasso are so greatly admired, then John
Sheeran’s Masterpiece art appreciation talks are for you. The
series starts on 22nd January. Masterpiece tickets cost £10 per
talk and are available from the Ipswich Regent and Corn
Exchange Box Office, tel: 01473 433100. A £1 booking fee
applies. Season tickets cost £80 for 10 talks from Imogen
Sheeran, tel: 01728 621126 Email:

Cards and
gifts in the
TIC
Cards for Good Causes are
running their Charity Christmas
Card Shop in Ipswich Borough
Council’s Tourist Information
Centre (TIC) in St Stephen’s
Church until 21st December.
Around 50 charities are involved
with at least 400 designs, so
there is something for everyone
and, more importantly, charities
receive at least 70p in every £1
worth of cards sold. The local
Scout groups will have a post
box in the shop and can deliver
your cards for 22p a card.
The TIC is the perfect place to
go to choose a special gift for
Christmas, including probably
the best selection of local
interest books and calendars,
quality glass and china and
Suffolk produce such as juice
and jams. Lovers of local history
and heritage can take a trip
down memory lane with a
fabulous local interest DVD or a
nostalgic title about bygone days
in Suffolk.
The TIC is open from Monday to
Saturday, 9am to 5pm, plus late
night shopping on Thursday
evenings until Christmas.
