1. What was the Abolitionist Movement? Who were some important people in the movement?
The Abolitionist movement was the movement to end African slavery. There were many important
people in this movement. William Lloyd Garrison published The Liberator as a newspaper against
slavery. Frederick Douglas was an escaped slave who began to speak out and demand an end to
slavery. Harriet Tubman, a former slave, served as a “conductor” taking slaves on the path of the
Underground Railroad. Also in this time, helping the abolitionist cause, Harriet Beecher Stowe
published Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852. It exposed the evils of slavery and provoked an emotional
outcry against the practice.
