In this Issue: Heart Health Month Romance and Pain? Time for a Tune Up? Physical Therapy Specialists Quarterly Newsletter February is Heart Health Month! When you get your annual physical do you get a cardio respiratory checkup as well? The American Heart Association published a scientific statement in November 2016 stressing the importance of cardiorespiratory fitness as a representation of heart health. It's important because it shows how the heart and your lungs work together with your muscles. So, when you see your doctor for your next physical, after you've had your height, weight, blood pressure and blood work checked, ask your doctor about a safe cardiovascular program for you. Once you know what this is we would be happy to help you safely get started in your cardiovascular program to avoid injury! Free Lecture Series I Forgot My Exercises! Being a physical therapist but also having been a patient of physical therapy numerous times, I have to admit I didn’t always get my home exercise program done! Was it because I really hated the exercise or did I just get busy, get to the end of my day and forget to do it? It was usually the latter. Our lives get so busy and so hectic that we get to the end of the day, exhausted and ready to collapse in bed. Then comes the “OH NO” I forgot to do my exercises today! I decided to come up with something to remind me to do my exercises so it didn't feel like such a chore. If I could just do a little bit throughout the day it created a habit and I avoided the guilt trip. Creating a habit gives you long-term benefits. That's when I started using STICKERS! Yes, stickers really work! First, find stickers that make you smile! Then, place a sticker in places you will be frequently during the day such as: rear view mirror in the car on your cell phone on your computer screen on the bathroom mirror near the kitchen sink It’s new year, are you looking for a new you? In Colorado, you can see a physical therapist first without seeing a physician for a referral. This is called Direct Access. Physical therapy provides the most conservative treatment options for you in order to return you to doing the things that bring JOY and fulfillment into your life. Physical therapists are trained to know if a referral back to your physician is required. Although referrals are not required, we do like to communicate with your healthcare team to provide the best possible care for you. Think of how many times you see these places throughout the day! I realize this will not cover your entire home program but you will still be benefitting. Frequently it’s as simple as: doing some belly breathing, keeping your jaw and face relaxed, contracting your pelvic floor muscles, readjusting your posture, releasing the tightness in your shoulders and neck or doing a small stretch. Talk to your therapist about what the best “sticker exercises” would be for you. Give yourself PERMISSION not to be perfect and do the best you can with your home program. Even in bingo you get a free space! If you would like to speak to one of our therapists in the office to determine if physical therapy is right for you please call us at 303-7402026.
