Hallowed be Your Name - Grace Community Church

Study #2
April 10, 2013
Hallowed be Your Name
1) Why do you think Jesus starts the prayer with this
petition? (see John 17:25-26
2) What does your name mean? Do you know any
meanings of names in the Bible? Which ones?
Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV)
"This, then, is how you
3) What is God’s name? What does his name reveal
about who He is?
should pray:
"'Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10
your kingdom come,
4) What does the word “hallow” mean?
your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
11
Give us today our daily
bread.
12
5) How do we “hallow” the name of God? What does
that look like?
Forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our
debtors.
13
And lead us not into temp-
tation,
but deliver us from the evil
one.'
6) What is necessary for us to “hallow” the name of
God?
7) Which of the names of God in the list in the yellow box most
resonates with you? Why?
Do not profane my holy name,
for I must be acknowledged as
holy by the Israelites. I am the
Lord, who made you holy .
Leviticus 22:32
The Names of God

El Shaddai—The God who
is mighty

El Roi—”The God who
sees”

El Rophe—”The God who
heals”

El Elyon—”God Most High”

El Olam “Everlasting God
9) We can not only pray the names of God back to Him, we
can also pray the works of God back to him as we invite
Him to hallow his name. Write out a prayer below using a
favorite story from the scriptures.

Adonai—”Master”

Yahweh—”I Am”

Yahweh Jireh: “The Lord
will provide”
(e.g. Luke 15—”O Father, make real in our town your
love for sinners; enhance your reputation in this church
as the God who welcomes sinners and eats with them.”)

Yahweh Shalom: “The Lord
is Peace”

Yahweh Tsidkenu: “The
Lord our Righteousness”

Yahweh Shammah: “The
Lord is there”
8) Even though the Lord’s Prayer begins with a call to God to
hallow His own name (for him to make his renown known),
we can participate in it by praying the names of God back to
him. Write out a prayer using one of the names of God from
the list in the yellow box.
We are invited through this opening line of the prayer to
let God be God. We invite him to move and act in accordance
to who HE is in our lives, in our church and in our community.
No wonder Jesus starts his teaching on prayer here in this
manner.
