The Arndell Advocate
Term 3 - Week 10
The Newsletter of Arndell Anglican College
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the Headmaster: Mr Gareth Leechman:
Well the end of term has almost arrived and what a term it has been! Over
the course of this week we will be saying farewell to our Year 12 students via
their Valedictory Service and Valedictory Dinner. This year our Year 12
students have really matured and last week they left the college with a great
deal of dignity and respect for each other as well as the college community. I
commend them on the mature way they have chosen to end their time at
Arndell. I look forward to celebrating their achievements at the Valedictory
Dinner on Monday night.
Also this week, the whole of the Secondary School will be attending camp. Over the course of the past
three years we have revamped our camping program ensuring that it meets the educational outcomes
we desire. To date we have seen real improvements in the quality of the camping program that we
offer and this year we have included another new initiative by having our Year 12 students attend an
HSC Study Camp. The purpose of this camp is to provide students with set times for them to
proactively prepare for their HSC examinations under the leadership of teaching staff from the college.
I look forward to seeing how this camp develops over the course of the week. To all the other campers I
wish them well and hope they will enjoy the opportunities presented to them.
In the Junior School we have our Creative and Performing Arts Week. I encourage parents of the
Junior School to keep themselves informed of what is occurring over the course of the week, and we
look forward to the many interesting things the teachers have planned for our Junior School students in
this area of study. I would also like to remind Junior School parents that this Tuesday 17th September
we have rescheduled the parent/teacher interviews that were supposed to have occurred last Tuesday,
but did not occur as a result of the fires in the Hawkesbury. If you are at all confused about this
process please feel free to ring the college and our front desk staff will happily address the matter with
you.
Finally, at the end of this week we will be holding our annual Equestrian Carnival. I would like to thank
Miss Kristen Bailey for all her efforts in leading the P&F committee associated with this carnival. Once
again we have over 200 entries into the carnival which is an outstanding result, considering that many
of the other carnivals are noticing a reduction in numbers. It should be a great day so please feel free
to come down to the showground and support our riders.
I hope all of our community will enjoy a well-earned break and we look forward to seeing everyone back
9th OCTOBER.

From the Head of the Junior School:
Mr Keith Peterson
Term 4 has certainly been a term to remember – and just as we have previously been
thinking about together – for many and all the right reasons!
And these ‘right reasons’ have so much and everything to do with each of our student’s
self-motivated engagement with their own learning; with each child’s individual sense of
belonging to their school, to Arndell Anglican College Junior School as their community.
And that’s surely a sense of belonging that can’t be simply conjured by osmosis or wish
therapy.
Instead it has everything to do with deliberate community building; and the defining and support of perceived and
incipient strengths.
And so there was the great experience of “Mini Market Day” – wonderfully organised by Mr Taylor (thank you Mr
Taylor!) and wonderfully run by Year 6 (thank you Year 6!). It was a morning in which just about everything was
happening as the ‘fun of the fair’ came to Arndell Anglican College Junior School! There was face painting and
bouncing on a castle with springs of air; soccer goal shooting and mini-golf; dress up photography and the gentle
mystery of a ‘haunted’ trail; arm wrestling against all odds and a sausage sandwich for all! It was brilliant fun! And all
working together to increase our bond as community and to further our strength as a community that is set on
making a difference in Jesus Name, as Year 6 look to have raised up to $3000 in support of the children of
Missionvale Junior School in South Africa! A wonderful achievement!
And then in Week 10 we are all set on a Safari of the Imagination as the whole Junior School encamps to Africa for a
Creative Arts Week - wonderfully inclusive of story and dance and drums and rhythm and singing and a touch of the
richness and mystery and beauty of other cultures bringing the gift of vibrant colour and meaning and celebration to
our own.
Again a sharing of strengths to make our experience and root of community that much deeper – that much more
real…
Thank you so much for your partnership with us in your children’s learning and flourishing over Term 4 - and every
blessing for the holiday ahead

Arndell on Stage
On Friday 30th of August, Arndell Anglican College
presented Arndell On Stage. All elective drama
students had a special and exciting performance to
show. Year 9 performed ‘’Law and Order: The Fairy
tale unit.’’ Year 10 presented “Live Action News” and
the Year 11’s performed three different acts “Fight
over Fuchsia”, “Swimming with Sins” and “Anger
Management”. All the acts were highly entertaining
and each of the students performed magnificently!
The audience on the night were extremely responsive
and the auditorium was filled with much laughter and
applause.
I
myself am a
Year 9 Drama
student and I

‘Detective Cindy

Everything went
as plan even our
‘slow
motion
chase sequence’ was a success. The night demonstrated the amazing
dramatic talent of our Arndell students and wouldn’t have been possible without
the assistance of our teachers Mr & Mrs Wilson.

HICES Music Festival
The Arndell Anglican College Creative and Performing Arts
department would like to acknowledge the involvement of
Isabella Pinter, Amelia Pinter, Kyle Hollis – Watts and
Lachlan Reardon in the 2013 HICES Music Festival.
The 2013 HICES Years 5-8 Music Festival brought together
students from HICES schools across New South Wales. The
Festival began with a 3 day camp at The Tops Conference
Centre, Stanwell Tops. At the camp students had the
opportunity to work with conductors from HICES Schools in
preparation for the final performance that was held at the
th
Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday the 14 of August.
The final concert was a brilliant evening of a variety of works from the Symphonic Winds ensemble, Concert Band,
String Orchestra, String Ensemble, Girls’ Choir, Boys Choir and Massed Choir.

HICES Debating Grand Finals 2013
Despite the elimination of our “B” team by Wollondilly Anglican College at the inter-regional final stage in a very tight
result, Arndell Anglican College had significant representation at the Grand Finals of the Heads of Independent Cost
Educational Schools (HICES) Debating competition held at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney on Monday, 1
September, 2013. Eight different schools were represented in the four finals with many other students travelling from
as far as Orange to receive individual awards.
The day opened with an address by the Headmaster of Arndell, Mr. Gareth Leechman, the newly elected Chairman
of the HICES group of principals, who stressed the high value of the skills gained from debating in terms of critical
thinking, the ability to think under pressure (great for examinations) and of course, public speaking skills. It must be
noted that the debaters only know the topic and whether they are affirmative or negative one hour before the debate
takes place and then have to produce speeches ranging in length from 4-5 minutes (year 7 & 8) through to 10-12
minutes for the Open Division (years 11 & 12)
However, by special invitation, the Grand Final of the Middle Division debate between Hills Grammar and Emanuel
School was chaired by Rose-Maree Rodgers from Arndell, who (unknown to her) was also to be acknowledged as
the finest individual speaker from any HICES school in the Middle Division at the presentation ceremony after the
last debate. This is a singular individual honour. David Lavelle was also present having been previously recognised
as a runner up individual speaker (to Rosie) in the Outer West region and Mr. Tom Lavelle was invited to be one of
the two staff adjudicators selected from the HICES schools’ group. Congratulations to Hills Grammar (who ironically
finished third behind Arndell in the Preliminary rounds from our outer west region) who successfully argued “That
modern technology has irreparably damaged human relationships”.
The Senior Division debate which followed between Central Coast Grammar and Macarthur Anglican was of an
outstanding quality. A very talented Central Coast team very narrowly won in arguing the affirmative “That Australia
st
has become the 51 State of the United States.” The pinnacle of the day is always the Open debate for the
prestigious Chapman Cup; this year it was between Newcastle Grammar School (affirmative) and Blue Mountains
Grammar School (negative) on the challenging topic “That it is justified to use extremism to defend liberty”. A brilliant
performance by the final speaker of the day, Aili Langford, very narrowly won the debate for BMGS. Congratulations
are in order for all speakers just for reaching this level; turning out a 10-12 minute speech after just an hour
preparation is not an easy task! This was a great experience for Rosie and David in appreciating what the top level of
HICES debating is like and in determining their aspirations in future years. I would also like to thank Mrs. Rodgers for
her support on the day.
There has been a huge groundswell in students, especially in Years 7 to 9, asking if they can be involved in debating
next year which is very encouraging for the development of this wonderful co-curricular activity within the College in
2014.

French Film Night
th
The French department held a festive film evening on Friday, 16 August. Students from Years 9, 10 and 11
attended the screening of the award winning comedy ‘Les Intouchables’. We also sadly said goodbye to our three
French exchange students – Fabio, Tristan and Laura. It was a real pleasure hosting the exchange students. They
were presented with a little bag of goodies which included a stuffed Australian animal. It is hoped that students at the
College have appreciated the opportunity to meet other young people from France and have benefited from the
exchange. A big thank you also goes to Jake Hilder, Ebony Zeuschner and Mrs McGuren who hosted the French
students.
A typical French meal of quiche with salad, bread and cheese was also partaken. While watching the movie, those
with a penchant for dessert snacked on profiteroles. Already looking forward to the next annual film evening!

Please note: during this busy period, a “take a number” system may need to operate to ensure
customers are served in the most efficient and timely manner and in the order in which they
arrived.
To alleviate this problem, it is suggested that parents plan ahead as much as possible for their
children’s uniform requirements by visiting the Uniform Shop before the end of Term 4.
If your child does not fit our standard size range, please contact the Uniform Shop before the end
of October so we can ensure your child has a correctly fitted uniform at the commencement of the
2014 school year. Also, having additional volunteers rostered on would minimize waiting times
greatly. So, if any parents could spare a couple of hours on any one of the above days, it would be
greatly appreciated (no experience necessary!). Please call the Uniform Shop on 4572 3254 or
drop in if you feel you can help in any way.
