Report, Results and Photos from 2016 National Rifle and Pistol Champs held at Rotorua. Over the past few years the National Rifle Champs has attracted an average of 13 entrants. Not a lot given the membership of the NZBPSF is 153. This year it was decided to run a combined rifle and pistol championship in the hope that shooters would take to opportunity to shoot in both disciplines and boost overall numbers especially with entries from the South Island being offered at half rate. Apart from the direct promotion via the website (at least three email reminders), email invitations were also sent to 43 members who had indicated an interest in attending one or both championships plus 27 known black powder pistol shooters. This high number of ‘indications of intent’ was encouraging to both the NZBPSF and the host club Rotorua who offered 24 different events and it was therefore very disappointing that the final number of entries was the same as previous years. However, and it is a good “however”, those who did participate enjoyed a well run event, shot in near ideal conditions and mixed and learnt much from other shooters. A new NZ record was set for the NZ Smoothbore event and some first time helpers not only helped and ensured the smooth running but also learnt new competition management and shooting skills. Congratulations to all place getters and thanks to all helpers.
