YEAR 2 TIMES TABLES CHALLENGE
Dear Parents/Carers,
We are extending the Mathematics challenge for all children in Year 2, aimed at developing instant
recall of the multiplication facts.
The 2014 National Curriculum states that in Year 2, pupils should be able to recall and use
multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd
and even numbers. This term, they have been focusing on the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Learning
multiplication is an important foundation for learning different aspects of mathematics such as
division, algebra, fractions, decimals, percentages and measures (including time), and area and
perimeter. We use multiplication on a daily basis: when shopping for items, for working out
discounts, when adapting recipes, and to tell the time.
We would like all children to succeed at their Times Table Challenge and will continue to work on
revising times tables in school, as part of our Numeracy Passport work.
Children also need to regularly practise times tables at home. Children should be able to answer
each question in up to 3 seconds.
Tables can be practised in the car, walking to and from school - anywhere and everywhere!

Pupils will be tested on their rapid recall of facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables during the week
beginning 6th February, as a timed assessment. They will be awarded a certificate for each times
table they can recall all the facts for by heart.
