Good People 5
WELCOME
FROM BILL:
We produced David Lindsay-Abaire’s
Rabbit Hole in 2008, so we were
interested in his latest play, Good People.
On one of my trips to London, I saw a
production in the West End and felt it was
a play that would be good at the Stanley
Industrial Alliance Stage. When director
Rachel Ditor chose actress Colleen
Wheeler to play the role of Margie,
we were off to a good start. Putting
together the creative team of designers
is one of the first things our Director of
Production, Stephan Baeuml, attends
to after I select the plays for the season
(he is now working on season 16/17). In
consultation with Rachel, an outstanding
team was assembled: Lauchlin Johnston
(set), Carmen Alatorre (costumes),
Adrian Muir (lighting), and Murray Price
(sound). At the same time, Stephanie
Hargreaves, our Artist Liaison, worked
with Rachel in casting the rest of the
roles. The set and props build started
in late January at our Granville Island
Production Centre. Towards the end
of February our wardrobe department
starting working on the show at the new
shop at the BMO Theatre Centre, where
the cast rehearsed in the larger of our two
rehearsal halls (the new musical Onegin
was rehearsing in an adjoining rehearsal
hall before moving onto the Goldcorp
Stage, where it is playing until April 10).
Now the production is on stage, and you
can see the results of everyone’s labours.
6 Good People
FROM PETER:
Good People is a tough and tender work
that deals with themes of insurmountable
class divides and the dilemma of
whether success in life depends on a
few lucky breaks or on the strength of
our individual character—themes that
I think we can all find relevance in the
city we live in. And one in which we at
the Arts Club also find relevance, as notfor-profit theatre companies like us also
deal with class divides in access to our
art. At the Arts Club, we believe in the
value that art can play in the lives and
development of our youth. But, given
that theatre is a very expensive art form
to produce, we also know that some
youth can’t access it without help. So
we’ve developed our donor-funded Open
Theatre initiative, which offers tickets
to Arts Club performances at no cost
to youth who otherwise would have no
access to it. We’ve also started an exciting
expansion to the program with on-site
workshops, coupled with backstage tours,
to deepen the engagement of youth who
attend our productions. The program
is fully subsidized by donations and we
distribute over 1200 tickets a season
through it. But we’d love to grow it. If
you’d like to help us in that endeavour,
please consider donating to the Arts
Club by calling our development staff at
604.687.5315 ext.847, or visiting artsclub.
com/support. Your tax-deductible
donation goes directly to programs like
this, making the art we produce on stage
better, and opening up a new world of
theatrical arts to youth who may not have
any other way to experience it. I’m so very
grateful I had a childhood filled with art.
And it’s why I donate to the Arts Club. I
was lucky. Some of us aren’t so lucky. So
let’s do something about it.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE
The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit
arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our
production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic
Director’s Circle today. Contact Parmida Zarrinkamar, Manager of Individual Giving, at 604.687.5315, ext. 261, for more information.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
David Lindsay-Abaire is an American playwright, lyricist, librettist,
and screenwriter. He was recently nominated for a Grammy Award
with composer Jeanine Tesori (Best Musical Show Album) and two
Tony Awards (Best Book of a Musical and Best Score) for their work
on Shrek the Musical. Prior to that David was awarded the 2008 Ed
Kleban Award as America’s most promising musical theatre lyricist.
Prior to that, he received the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his
play Rabbit Hole, which premiered on Broadway at MTC’s Biltmore Theatre and
was presented by the Arts Club in 2008. Rabbit Hole also received five Tony Award
nominations, including Best Play, and the Spirit of America Award. Good People
officially opened on Broadway on March 3, 2011, with Frances McDormand and Tate
Donovan in the lead roles. The play was nominated for the 2011 Tony Award for
Best Play, and won the 2011 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for McDormand.
Lindsday-Abaire’s other plays include Fuddy Meers, Kimberly Akimbo, Wonder of the
World, High Fidelity and A Devil Inside, among others. In addition to his work in
theatre, his screen credits include the film adaptation of Rabbit Hole (20th Century
Fox) starring Nicole Kidman, as well as the Guardians of Childhood (DreamWorks),
and Oz: The Great and Powerful (Disney, directed by Sam Raimi). David is a
graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and the Juilliard School, as well as a member of

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR
David Lindsay-Abaire is one of my favourite contemporary
writers. His writing is deceptively simple, seamless, and
natural. And nothing, not a word, is extraneous. The subtext is
rich: what the characters are deliberately saying is as important
as what they are deliberately not saying. Themes and ideas are
woven into the fabric of the play appearing and reappearing like a dream.
The play is set in the poor neighbourhood of South Boston, but the gap
between the have and have-nots in our own city is growing. Our belief in being
good Canadian people is being challenged by that. How, precisely do we,
personally, manifest our belief in being compassionate human beings?
As well as tackling the Southie accent with our dialect coach Tony Alcantar,
preparation for this play included some non-fiction articles that provided
valuable insight into the specifics of the American working poor (versus our
own conditions, though the similarities abound…) Worth tracking down are:
Nickel and Dimed: On (not) getting by in America by Barbara Ehrenreich; “Why I
make bad decisions” by Linda Tirado; and, recently in The New Yorker magazine
Matthew Desmond’s article, “Forced Out”, about the culture of eviction in
America.
With characters as complex and flawed as ourselves, Good People cracks open
the codes we live by and tests their value and limitations. I hope you enjoy
David Lindsay-Abaire’s lively story—and the conversations and reflection that
follow on the ride home, and the days to come.
— Rachel Ditor
