Third Sunday of Lent - St. Joseph Catholic Church

Third Sunday of
Lent
St. Joseph’s Parish Bulletin – March 18/19, 2017
Joseph is the patron saint of the dying because, assuming he died before Jesus' public life, he died with Jesus and
Mary close to him, the way we all would like to leave this earth.
Joseph is also patron saint of the Universal Church, families, fathers, expectant mothers (pregnant women),
travelers, immigrants, house sellers and buyers, craftsmen, engineers, and working people in general.
We celebrate two feast days for Joseph: March 19 for Joseph the Husband of Mary and May 1 for Joseph the
Worker. March 19 has been the most commonly celebrated feast day for Joseph, and it wasn't until 1955 that
Pope Pius XII established the Feast of "St. Joseph the Worker" to be celebrated on May 1. This is also May Day
(International Workers' Day) and believed to reflect Joseph's status as the patron of workers.
Many places and churches all over the world are named after St. Joseph, including the Spanish form, San Jose,
which is the most commonly named place in the world. Joseph is considered by many to also be the patron saint
of the New World; of the countries China, Canada, Korea, Mexico, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Peru, Vietnam; of the
regions Carinthia, Styria, Tyrol, Sicily; and of several main cities and dioceses.
In art, Joseph is typically portrayed as an older man, with grey hair and a beard, often balding, sometimes
appearing frail and a marginal figure next to Mary and Jesus, if not entirely in the background. Some statues of
Joseph show his staff topped with flowers. St. Joseph is shown with the attributes of a carpenter's square or
tools, the infant Jesus, his lily blossomed staff, two turtle doves, or a spikenard.
There is much we still wish we could know about Joseph -- exactly where and when he was born, how he spent
his days, exactly when and how he died. But Scripture has left us with the most important knowledge: who he
was -- "a righteous man" (Matthew 1:18).

MARCH 19: THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
In Lent we contemplate our baptism
and our reconciliation with God. God
gave us living water at our Baptism.
The new life we receive in baptism
commits us to a 'holy boldness' by
which we can reach out to our
community and live this life to the full.
Though we often fail, God calls us back
and through reconciliation we can
continue to live our baptismal graces.
Action: Like the woman at the well,
reach out to someone in your
community; by your actions they will
know God.

LIVING WATER
It is often said that Eskimos--Native Americans of Alaska and
Canada--have many different words for snow. These words describe
different kinds of snow. A similar diversity of words for water is
true of people of the Middle Eastern desert. Today, Jesus speaks of
"living water". Literally this is "flowing" water as opposed to that
which accumulates in pools or wells. Standing water can become
stagnant. It becomes less desirable in taste than water which has
flowed from a spring or river. The Samaritan woman offers to draw
water from the well, but Jesus suggests that he can offer her the
living variety. Apparently he is referring to the water of Baptism
which allows each of the baptized to become sources of life
themselves. (Father Richard Lonsdale)
FR. YAREK’S PRAYER FOR LENT 2017
By the power of Your Holy Cross + (make a sign of the
cross), Lord Jesus Christ,
Save your people from all evil
And lead them on the path of salvation

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
A plenary
indulgence for the
100th anniversary
of the apparitions
of Our Lady of
Fatima
For the 100th
anniversary of the
apparitions of Our
Lady of Fatima in
Portugal, Pope
Francis has decided
to grant a plenary
indulgence
opportunity
throughout the
entire anniversary
year, which began Nov. 27, 2016, and will end
Nov. 26, 2017. To obtain the plenary
indulgence, the faithful must also fulfill the
ordinary conditions: go to Confession and
Communion, be interiorly detached from sin,
and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.

desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by
your powerful intercession and
obtain for me from your Divine Son
all spiritual blessings through Jesus
Christ, Our Lord; so that having
engaged here below your Heavenly
power I may offer my thanksgiving
and homage to the most loving of
Fathers. O St. Joseph, I never weary
contemplating you and Jesus asleep
in your arms. I dare not approach
while He reposes near your heart.
Press him in my name and kiss His
fine Head for me, and ask Him to
return the Kiss when I draw my
dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of
departing souls, pray for us. Amen.
