while inviting everyone to grow
and thrive within our community
of friendship and mutual respect.
It is our ultimate goal to foster the
fulfillment and happiness which
arises from the best possible
quality of life. Our residents shall
be treated with dignity, cared for
professionally and loved as family.

Now known as the Willis Tower, the view is as magnificent as ever. Not only does it provide a
panoramic vision of the Windy City and Lake Michigan, it also provides glimpses of four states
on sparkling clear days. All of that combined with the vehicles below that looked like Matchbox
cars caused our son, David, to understandably comment that he felt small.

The view however is no longer the biggest attraction the deck offers. That distinction goes to a
new feature dubbed The Ledge. Designed by the same architectural firm that constructed the
building in the early 1970’s, The Ledge is comprised of four fully enclosed glass boxes that extend
four feet over the side of the building, enabling those brave enough to look straight down over
1,350 feet with nothing between them and the earth except a glass floor.
October
A few weeks ago, my family and I spent several vacation days in my favorite big city, Chicago.
Our kids had not been in what used to be called the Sears Tower since they were in grade school,
so we decided to head up to the 103rd story observation deck.
This attraction is not for the faint of heart, as four California tourists found out the hard way on
May 29 when they heard a crack on The Ledge that they were standing on and the glass started
shattering into a million pieces. Thankfully, what cracked was the thin protective coating on top
of the three half inch thick layers of glass that were never in any danger. However, the tourists
didn’t know that and thought they were doomed.
As I’ve reflected about waiting 45 minutes to venture out onto The Ledge for ourselves, I can’t
help but think that most of us don’t line up and wait for our chance spiritually speaking to feel
like there’s nothing between us and disaster. We don’t take selfies on The Ledge of disaster and
death, or jump and down to see if God will support us when nothing else does, or embrace the
danger by lying on our bellies to get a better look at the depths below. Rather, the natural impulse is to want to turn and run as fast as we can.
What’s more, when the glass starts shattering beneath us, who of us 103 stories up, is sticking
around to figure out if it’s the protective coating or the half inch thick layers of glass that are
crumbling?
Thankfully, the Scriptures have a lot to say about when it feels like nothing is supporting us and
our world is disintegrating below us. Consider the following passages that I often use when I’m
asked to preside at a funeral or memorial service.
“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” - Deuteronomy 33:27
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear,
though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea . . . The Lord Almighty is with us . . . The Lord Almighty is with us.” - Psalm 46
When everything around us seems to be breaking apart, God’s everlasting arms are still there.
We may not sense Him, but that doesn’t negate the fact that He still loves us very much and that
like the glass floor, He has promised to support us in our time of trouble. True, the Ledge of life
is still intimidating, but if we trust Him and step out in faith, we can begin to see and experience
views that we never could of otherwise.
