June 2010 Newsletter
From the President
Long time Eastwood Chamber of Commerce member, Hunt & Hunt,
helped Ian Hunt celebrate 60 years practice as a
solicitor at a dinner on 6 May. Ian has had a distinguished legal career and his community
service work has already been recognised with an Order of Australia
medal (OAM). The Chamber would like to congratulate Ian on his achievements
in law and for his community service. For more details, the media release from
Hunt & Hunt is included on page 6.
6 May was also the day that the Chamber executive presented Victor Dominello, local member
for Ryde, with our petition about the electricity supply disruptions in Eastwood. Victor has
presented the petition to Parliament and spoken on the matter during June. He has also written
to the Minister for Energy calling for action on the matter.
The Chamber would like to welcome new member, Lyn Lim of Phoenix Beauty. Phoenix Beauty
is located in the Eastwood Shopping Centre at the edge of Eastwood Plaza. You can see their
full range of products instore or at www.phoenixhb.com. Lyn has sent us her “blossoms” flyer
which is included in this newsletter.
Jackie Pettit from The Shack Youth Outreach Centre was recently paid a surprise visit by the
crew from Channel 9’s Random Acts of Kindness. Jackie tells us:
On Tuesday morning I was told I had to be at work early because we had some uni people
coming in.
As I sat with my back to the door, someone called my name and it turned out to be Channel 9
“Random Acts of Kindness”. They had come to surprise me, to spoil me for the day. They took
me away on a limo, had champagne at a restaurant, caught a seaplane to Jonah’s (restaurant at
Palm Beach), had lunch and some more champagne. They presented me with a box, which had
my old helmet in it and gave me 4 motorbikes for me to choose from. They had me pick my
favourite…and gave it to me. It was a Honda Shadow 400 cc, worth $11,000.
My husband and son joined me and we stayed at Jonah’s overnight. The next day they got me
to ride to The Shack…to show off my bike they said.In my absence they had painted The
Shack, brought in 5 new computers, a new lounge and television cabinet…even new signs.
They spent about $ 30,000 in total.
The television show will air during July. Congratulations Jackie!
Anne Bryce, CEO of Achieve Australia, is taking part this week in the Vinnies CEO sleepout. This
is a national event where CEO’s experience what it is like to be homeless and sleep rough.
We can all support Anne by going to the website www.ceosleepout.org.au and making a donation.
All funds raised go towards the provision of services for the homeless by St Vincent de Paul
Society.
The Chamber speaks to
Margaret Greig Forte School of Music
Q
What does your business do?
We provide music lessons for all ages of
students from 18 mths to adults. We are
particularly good at group piano/keyboard
lessons which we deliver in a really fun
way for children at age and stage
appropriate levels. But we also are great
at more advanced tuition for piano
students and other instruments like
saxophone and violin. We have a
reputation for high quality music tuition.
Q
Who are your principal clients?
Children and their parents!
Q
How long have you had this business?
I have personally had this business for almost 10 years, although it has been in this
same location now for over 15 years.
Q
What do you enjoy most about being in business?
Doing something I love and am passionate about, and providing people with great
opportunities for learning music. Hopefully we can also inspire everyone out there to
understand how beneficial music is to one’s whole life experience.
Q
What difficulties does your business face at the moment?
Getting the message across about how important music is; trying to counter age old
‘beliefs’ about teaching and learning music which are definitely outdated; and especially
that it is a life long skill and ‘trying’ for 10 weeks is not going to give enough skills and
learning to last.
Q
Have you had any previous businesses?
Yes – a music school in the 1980’s
Q
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Travelling, reading, some crafty activities
Q
What do you like about being in Eastwood?
Cultural diversity makes it vibrate and hum. But also the groups of people
tend to have more belief in the power of music
Q
who live here
What else would you like to say about yourself or your business?
Many people express surprise when they get here about the whole big world that is
Forte that you just don’t see from street level! I guess that comes from being upstairs.
But it sure is a happy world full of fantastic music making. We also have a most wonderful
and vibrant staff of very talented musicians, who teach but also study and/or perform
elsewhere. And the studying goes right up to me – it is a never ending journey for
knowledge and improvement.
Finance Matters
By Trina Mosley
Allegiance Home Loans
Well, it appears that we are all still spending too much money and the value of property is still
going up!
For the 3rd month in a row during May, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has raised the
official cash rate by 25 basis points – rate now 4.50%
The announcement was made by Governor Monetary Policy, Glenn Stevens.
To put this into perspective though, the cash rate in May 2008 was 7.25% - interest rates are
still relatively low at present.
All of the major banks announced that they will pass on the rate rise.
This year is shaping up to be the “Year of the Investor”, many people are st rting to return to
the property market due to increased values and good rent returns (especially in the Sydney
market – you need to do your own research).
Another item of interest out there in the market place with loans is your ow credit file – Do you
know what enquiries / information is on your own credit file? This is vitally important when you
are about to apply for finance – especially if you have had some problems with credit in the
past. Also, when apply for finance, if you “shop around” for loans – remember , an enquiry can
be listed on your credit file.
It is always best to talk to a finance expert before making decisions about your loans.
Kind regards, Trina

PRESS RELEASE
Ian Hunt OAM Celebrates 60 years as a Solicitor
On 6 May, 2010 Ian Hunt OAM celebrates 60 years as a Solicitor. On 6 May 1950 Ian Hunt was
admitted onto the Roll of Solicitors by the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
Ian Hunt is the last partner of Hunt & Hunt who served during World War II, serving in the Royal
Australian Air Force in Europe. Upon being demobbed in 1945, Ian began studying law at The
University of Sydney and was articled to his father, E A Hunt, one of the founders of Hunt & Hunt.
Ian practised in the city office for 23 years and in 1973 opened an office at Eastwood. That office
recently relocated to Macquarie Park in North Ryde, opposite Macquarie Shopping Centre and
on the edge of Macquarie University. Hunt & Hunt's North Ryde office is one of the largest legal
practices outside the Sydney CBD.
During his career, Ian has worked tirelessly for the community, and for his Church. Following in
his father footsteps, Ian was the Honorary Legal Officer of the Presbyterian Church of Australia in
New South Wales until the formation of the Uniting Church in Australia in 1975. From 1975 –
1988 Ian Hunt was a member of the Uniting Church's Property Trust, and served on a number of
other committees for the Church. He was also on the Board of Burnside Homes, a large child
welfare agency of the Uniting Church. Ian has served on numerous other Boards and
committees, and in 1970 he was a founding director of the Asian Development Foundation.
His other charitable groups are the Royal Rehabilitation Centre, Ryde; the Foresight Foundation
of the Deaf/Blind, the Australian Human Rights Foundation, Life After Prison (Inc), and the Ryde
Business Forum. He is a past president of Rotary at Eastwood.
Ian's considerable service to the community was recognised in January 2001 with the award of
the Centenary Medal, and in June 2002 with the award of the Order of Australia Medal (OAM).
The firm is holding a celebratory dinner on Thursday, 6 May 2010 to congratulate Ian on
achieving this fantastic milestone, and in recognition of his tireless contribution to his country and
community.
